Probably more an infrequently asked question, but:

What does "Automatically show member-contributed book covers" do?

I'm updating the HelpThing page for editing your profile, and there's no explanatory text for this setting. Anyone know what the effect is?

That.... is a very good question. I just tested it and I can't figure it out. Where exactly is it showing the member-contributed covers that it wasn't before? Hmmm.

I'll be interested to hear the answer!

I can only think of two places where you see them - when you go to 'change covers' - the member uploaded covers show - but I don't know if you can customise that???

And in the covers statistics where you can see how many member covers you have vs Amazon and 'no covers'.

Are either of these able to be customised? ??

Not much help sorry - but I'd like to know now too!

I think this pertains to the guessing issue; if you have not specifically selected a cover and there is no Amazon cover for your ISBN but there is a member-uploaded cover, should it show it or not? If you look at your cover stats, there's an item for "Member-contributed cover, best guess for ISBN; if you have this turned on, those books will show covers. (Otherwise, they'll show the placeholder/no-cover image.)

Yes! That would be it - and that was not always an available option, as I remember. You just got a 'blank' cover or was it a default Amazon - I can't remember as I started scanning in my own covers as soon as I could?

I thought it must be something to do with covers and statistics.
lorax to the rescue again. :)

5> It sure is nice to have folks who are long in the tooth and can remind us of the olden days sometimes, eh? ;)

:D If it helps, I had my 4th LT anniversary in January, so I've actually been here a few months longer than you. I just don't remember much about the state of covers back then at all.

Thanks for all the replies. Does anyone have a good example ("no Amazon cover for your ISBN but there is a member-uploaded cover") we could test on?

I'm trying to think of one, as I remember getting some of these - I will keep a look out and add it here as soon as I find one.

I am new here and I get so happy when I click on change cover and find the actual cover of my book! I know it sounds silly but even with the ISBN the cover chosen isn't always the exact cover I have and I'm just OCD enough to have that bother me. I am thrilled with all the member covers and 90% of the time I can find an exact match. The few I couldn't I have scanned or photographed my own book and added it. Makes me so happy to see the exact cover art that I am familiar with. Older books are especially a challenge and I have ended up grabbing the 2000something version just to avoid searching through pages of close but that's not exactly it. So I grab it and then just change the cover art to make it match mine.
Sorry for the rambling but for a newcomer like myself being able to add books I've had since I was a kid is such fun!!! I'm still all excited to have found this place =)

heh, heh. cool profile pic, yrizaria. I so agree with you. I've scanned MANY of my books, and have NO Amazon covers, thankyouverymuch.
