Update on Kayaalder's Book Assignment

I thought it might be interesting if we posted occasional updates on where we are with our Go Review That Book assignments so I'm posting a brief update. Everyone else is welcome to follow suit if you so desire.

Scorbet chose for me the book The Poyson Garden by Karen Harper. Due to numerous (and normal) interruptions caused by a seven year old daughter, I only made it through Chapter Two yesterday.

I found it a bit difficult to find my footing in this one and had to re-read several paragraphs; however, I am not sure if this is due to the style of the writer or the fact that I have a raging sinus infection so I am withholding all judgment at this point.

I love historical mysteries and have long been interested in the Tudor / Elizabethan periods; therefore, I am hopful that now that I am a bit into the story, the story will begin to flow a bit more for me.

Hopefully, we can attract a few more members so it won't matter how long any one book takes. I've posted about us in one of my groups, and reading_fox has advised that I invite people, but I'm still so new around here, I'm not sure who to invite.

I love the concept of this group and am so glad you started it. I am also very new here. As far as knowing whom to invite, you might consider visiting the profiles of people on your shared books list. Just a thought :)

The people not to invite are those on the Zeitgeist page of most prolific reviewers..... here though it looks very out of date!

For some reason life appears to have intervened, I expected to be writing my review by now, btu I'm still barely into the book. To much reading talk threads!

Speaking of too many talk threads what would you say about the idea that most (all?) people who read voraciously are frustrated writers and tend to take their frustrations out by participating in these discussions?

There may be some truth in that. I know that armchair TV critics who reckon they can do better than the original creator of characters/setting take theirs out in fan fiction, a very scary genre.

No, Caramellunacy, it doesn't mean you have to leave! Please stay. It just means we expect great things from a seasoned pro :)

Second Update:

Yesterday, I did manage to work in a bit of reading time and read chapters 3-10. I am finding it a bit easier going now that I am into the story more. I still find myself having to re-read sentences here and there. However, I am very much enjoying the story and have added the rest of the series to my wishlist.

Third Update:
Only made it to Chapter the Fifteenth yesterday but I am enjoying the story much more and hope to finish it today.

But I have two other reviews to write and a ton of studying for exams to do. Plus tonight is the 20th Anniversary showing of Dirty Dancing - and I'll get to see it on the big screen for the very first time. So exciting!

A rather deep hole, I'd say :) Enjoy the movie - I remember when it first came out. Sigh. My age is telling again.

Update the Fourth:

Didn't get much reading done yesterday. I am going through a bout of extreme insomnia which seems as if it would be good for reading but is actually not, at least for me. I did, however, finally get to watch "The Queen" with Helen Mirren. Loved It! I'm going to watch it again tonight before I have to return it tomorrow.

I was already a fan of Elizabeth II and from what I've read, this movie was very well research and portrays a very real portrait of the queen.

Ok, so I'm back to reading today. Should have my review by the end of the week for sure.

Referring to message 5 about frustrated writers. Maybe some are, but I long ago realized I had nothing to say of importance and that it is just as important to be a Great Reader, and more important than being a mediocre writer. After all, if everyone were writers and no one were readers...I think I read to slow to join this group, and I hate to be forced into reading anything. Still a rebel after all these years.

Also in reference to message 5, I AM one of those frustrated writers. About 12 years ago, I got hooked on epic fantasy after reading the first Terry Goodkind novel. I had always loved fantasy growing up but had not read much during the in-between years.

It was then that I decided to write a fantasy novel of my own; wanting a realistic high-medieval setting, I started researching the period.

The end result is that I began to love the research more than the writing itself and have become an amateur historian which later led me to genealogy.

I would still love to write a book one day but now I am more interested in writing a story loosely based on the life of my great-grandmother.

Sidenote: during the time I was actually working on the writing of my fantasy, I joined a local writer's group. However, it was composed of almost all published authors. Rather than spur me on to greatness, it intimidated the heck out of me and I quit going.
