I finished A Game of Thrones and started A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. I love a book that gives you characters to despise.

I'm reading Feet of Clay and The Lion's Eye.

(I'm also rereading bits and pieces of Puck of Pook's Hill, Peter Pan and vaguely related non-fiction books with long titles which I can't remember.)

Recently finished The Prestige by Christopher Priest.

Mixed feelings about that one. Well-written, wonderful recreation of an era, the slightest smidge of fantastical and steampunk (yum!), but the characters failed to engage me.

Now beginning a Members' Giveaway ebook, Laying the odds.

Unfortunately, RL has forced me into delaying the ending of Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan. I'm only now stepping into the Three-fold Land with Aviendha.

I've just started the Game of Thrones, and its true, #1 -- there are truly despicable characters. Great fun.

Finished The Inheritance by Robin Hobb/Megan Lindholm yesterday. There weren't any stories that I didn't like, and I loved "Homecoming" and "A touch of Lavender" especially. Now I'm visiting Zoo City, which people in the SF group have loved.

Just finished The Briar King, first in Greg Keyes' Kingdom of Thorn and Bone series. I really enjoyed it so have put the next on order at the library. Whilst I wait for that I am reading another book I picked up in the library called The Dragon Book. A collection of short stories (edited by Jack Dann) all about dragons, I was attracted by some of the authors listed on the cover such as Garth Nix, Jonathan Stroud, Diana Wynne Jones and Tamora Pierce. The style of the stories varies greatly from epic fantasy, to comical spoofs to dark urban fantasy, enjoying it very much so far :)

Back in Chalion with Paladin of Souls. It's a reasonably entertaining story, but I'm starting to find the recurring theme of older man/much younger wife a little weird.

Steadily moving through A Game of Thrones. There is so much going on, and I am patiently waiting for those despicable characters to get what they deserve.

I'm with a Private Investigator in Boston. What do you mean that this isn't the Crime, Thriller & Mystery group? Oh, okay then I'd best say that he's an angel that goes by the name of Remy Chandler and he's hoping for A Kiss Before the Apocalypse.

Finished A Clash of Kings and started A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin. Brutal.

#1 and #7. What I love about The Song of Ice and Fire series, is some of those despicable characters come to be loved characters by book 4. Truly amazing.

Now reading Midnight Blue Sonja Blue Collection by Nancy Collins - I've only ever read the first book Sunglasses After Dark so it'll be a treat to continue the story into books two and three...

#14 Yes, he is very good in the way he shows how people who are not really bad can do bad things. What stops them being bad people is that they know what they have done is wrong and feel guilty about it, much more realistic than a saintly hero who never makes a mistake or a stupid or selfish decision in their life. I think he really has set the standard for fantasy writing in the 21st century very high.

#14, majkia: Exactly. This is a re-read for me in anticipation of the fifth book so I suspect I know who you mean. My son is not a reader but he is watching the HBO series and loving it. It is so hard for me not to give things away.

In Bryn Shaer, uncovering boatloads of secrets in Starcrossed. Really pleasantly surprised by how nuanced and well-realized the setting and characters are, and how well the author avoids any sense of "Mary Sue"-ness to her young female protagonist.

At the speculative side of fantasy near the border with sci-fi with the written Thursday Next in One of Our Thursdays is Missing. I've completely forgotten what happened in the previous book but so far it hasn't made it any less enjoyable.

After having been on my bookshelf for two years, I am finally reading Hero where part of the population are heroes and some are villains. You are responsible for developing your own costume and coming up with your alias. A great coming-of-age story anchors it.

>29 Carnophile: Nice catch on the dangling participle!

I'm busy with Jane and her iron dragon, Melanchthon, in The Iron Dragon's Daughter. Bit of an anti-fantasy, but it's really well-written and thought-provoking.

Just returned from 17th century France with The Cardinal's Blades. I'll be heading back there at some point when I pick up the 2nd book in the series.

The 5th Kate Daniels book, Magic Slays was excellent. Now back in the world of Swordspoint with The Fall of the Kings and its luscious prose.

Have just crawled through a drain with Jonathan Starling and crossed into Darkside, the secret and nefarious London that exists just under the surface in Tom Becker's first book in the Darkside series. Pretty creepy so far....

I've started reading Transformation by Carol Berg but am considering to quit it , its not boring so far but I don't have the Stomach‏ for books with too much suffering (how come am a fantasy fan right ?)

44ronincats
Jun 24, 2011, 10:33 am

Not at all, queentamir. I'm with you in not enjoying books where torture and suffering are dwelt on, seemingly with relish at times. I don't want to be in the mind of the "evil one". And I have been a major fantasy fan for 50 years.

Just finished Black Lung Captain by Chris Wooding which I loved, and I wish there were more books already out in the series! Still finishing off A Game of Thrones in my quest to re-read them all, so that's by my bed, with The Wind-Up Girl in my bag for my commute.

I had tried to read The Unremembered by Peter Orullian but I got tired of not having any idea what the terms he invented actually mean. And there is something vaguely annoying about the mechanics of how he writes.

Just left Erna in Black sun rising. It was a real slog to finish this book, and if I hadn't already got the sequels (50p each at the library booksale), I think I would have given up. I didn't really care about the characters, and there were whole paragraphs written where nothing was actually said. Strange, as This alien shore by the same author is one of my favourite books ever.

ok i need some serious help in the fantasy department. Anyone got any really good fantasy book? Particularly a good series please!

56Unreachableshelf
Jul 14, 2011, 12:49 pm

>55 curlyQ42: What kind of fantasy do you want? A really good fantasy series could be anything from A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin to The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're both what you want right now.

Also, you might get better response if you start a different thread, so your recommendations don't all get burried amongst what we're reading right now.
