It's a lot of MS Access, MS Excel and in-house databases.

If you are in an incentive program where you can order stuff from a catalog for points, chances are good that I can look you up. :)

#53 - Yup, we're nabes! We occaionally ride at The Red Buffalo Ranch, in Evansburg State Park in Montgomery County. We ride western (typical, eh). Youngest daughter finally switched from English to western when we spent a week in Colorado at a Guest Ranch. The wranglers kept telling Molly to stop posting. We try to include riding in our various trips, so we ridden the deserts outside Santa Fe, NM; along the New River in WV, after a day of white-water rafting the New; Florida, Southern Calif (where I grew up).

Dream rides would be across in the Eastfold & Westfold of Rohan, and from Rivendell to the Shire!

That always cracked me up as we have countless different cheeses here and Emmentaler is but one of them and in my opinion the most boring one. Although we do export the good stuff and keep the lower quality one.
The first time someone in the States asked me what kind of cheese I wanted in my sandwich and mentioned Swiss cheese among the ones available, I asked "which one?". I got a blank stare as a reply.

#68 - Agree on Emmentaler, it's almost like what we in Sweden call "hushållsost" - literally "household cheese" but more appropriately translated as "default" or "standard" or "bland". Or as a friend of mine says - "plain vanilla" ;-)

#65 - I like the kids at this age too. What I don't like is all the testing that goes with No Child Left Behind. It has changed everything that I do. Despite my best efforts, I am forced to "teach to the test". It's enough to make me leave middle school. Not next year, though! I am shutting my door and doing what I please, the test be damned!

#71 - You know, that "teaching to the test"-attitude from both teachers and students was what put me off school.
I'm hungry for knowledge, and some say I always has been, but I want to understand things, not to burp up undigested chunks of random information...

It's one of the issues I have with my sister. She thinks I was stupid for not only studying what one could guess come up at the test, and she thought I was nuts for asking my teachers to elaborate on the question "why" as she was sure that was bad for the marks/grades.
We both agree on I having a wider knowledge of things, though ;-)

#71 hobbitprincess - No need to aplogize for that rant! The problem is with the methods behind the slogan or goal of "no child left behind." Measuring by standardized testing is the only thing bureaucrats can come up with. I think the slogan demands each child be treated and taught/educated as appropriate for that individual; but that's too costly and there's nothing for paper pushers and politicians to point at for quick results (for more mone & votes). I don't like the illiteracy that we seem to fallen into in the US, but I am not impressed with current remedies either.

#72, Busifer -- I've always hated the education system for that too. Learning for a test is not learning. I was homeschooled until 10th grade, and I am so grateful my parents kept me home.

After 3 years in public school (during which I did all 4 years of high school requirements because my homeschooled freshman year didn't count to the public school), I was so ready to get OUT! I can't imagine spending 12 years in the system. It's such a waste of time. As mentioned, earlier, teaching myself is much more effective and efficient.

The way I am using 'freedom' is probably not how you would use freedom when talking about riding - in western (pleasure) riding I would imagine most of the freedom is the freedom and pleasures of the trail... sort of go-anywhere, do-anything. Dressage is about balance and freedom of movement - big, free, stretchy gates. Blue Hors Matinee has amazing, free movement. What a mare! I'm glad you liked the clip.

Elena - Elderflower is a fantastic flavour! I have wonderful recipe for leavened buns/rolls filled with rhubarb, elderflower and coarsly grounded marzipan. The sourdough is made with apples... Hm, I think I have to run off and start a new dough so I can make som buns this weekend! It's rhubarb & elderflower season right now :-)

#112 Anjila *po-tart baited breath* huh?! That's my kind of girl, as the saying goes. The Wife favors the brown-sugar cinnamon pop-tarts, my favorite is the recent French Toast flavor, but can never find it any more, so actual favorite is the cinnamon roll, followed by brown-sugar cinnamon. Often I grab a pack on the way out the door and eat in the car at room temp, when rushing off in early morning travels.

I like the fudge ones and s'mores and other chocolate flavors. They're more dessert treats than breakfast to me. Brown-sugar is good, hubby likes strawberry.

I love the corners and edges when they get toasted juuuuuuuust so. And I like 'em iced, I don't care what anyone's religion (#117) says!

Okay, I have to admit I was formerly part of the 'anti-pop-tart' group, until my son insisted I get him a box of the brown sugar ones. Instead of toasting them I microwave them for about 10 seconds. They are divine with coffee or tea.

I still insist they actually have negative nutritional value... but some things are worth it. ;o)

Pop-tarts make me ill (too much sugar for my body), but I still love them. It's kind of unfair. I think I ate too many of them when I was little. Hehe.

It's very nice, and also available and affordable here in the Pennsylvania commonwealth-controlled liquor stores. Everyone calls them "the State Stores". You can only find on the shelf what local managers will stock from the master state controlled inventory or approved list.

And to buy beers, you go to a "beveragfe shop" or distributor, where you must buy beer by the case. Restaurants, pubs, etc. can get a license to sell by the six-pack (at a huge markup in price).

We had no such thing in California growing up, and I was surprised by it's existence when I relocated here.

And a bit late on the pop-tart discussion, but my absolute favorite is the hot fudge sundae ones, closely followed by non-iced blueberry, which I slather with butter. :D (For all other pop-tarts, they must be iced. And all pop-tarts must be toasted to a very slight crunch.)

Clam, my younger sister microwaves her pop-tarts. I always thought that was really odd. But I guess she's not the only one who does it!

The s'mores PopTarts are very good frozen, actually.

The iced strawberry ones I eat cold, the brown-sugar ones get toasted. In junior high I'd toast a PopTart for breakfast, wrap it in a paper towel, and use it as a handwarmer as I was waiting for the bus in the snow.... Then, of course, I'd get in trouble for eating on the bus.

mmmm pop tarts. I don't eat them often, but when I do it has to be frosted cherry (with the multicolored sprinkles). And they must be toasted until the edges are just slightly overdone.

A friend with american relatives told me once about a salad with whipped cream that she had been served at a family gathering. Never encountered it myself, but that was TOTALLY weird!

In the midwest (at least in Wisconsin) there is a big distinction between salad and saaalad (nasal a). The second is usually some kind of lime jello with marshmellows and, occasionally, grated carrot and topped with whipped cream. Usually served after the lutefisk.

For the love of all that's good and holy, stay away from it!

Oh, and peanut butter and banana is eaten in the states too.

Here's something horrible, though: In Hungary they eat chocolate covered dehydrated sour cream bars, and in Germany, where they really should know better, they mix coca cola and beer.
So yes, things like that *do* happen in European cuisine :-)

Fluffy Pink Fruit Salad

Yields: 18 servings
"Pastel marshmallows give this salad a perky look. It makes enough for a crowd and nicely rounds out a brunch."
INGREDIENTS:
1 (10 ounce) jar maraschino
cherries
1 (8 ounce) package cream
cheese, softened
2 cups whipping cream,
whipped
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple
tidbits, drained

1 (15.25 ounce) can fruit
cocktail, drained
1 (15 ounce) can sliced
peaches, drained and diced
6 medium firm bananas, sliced
3 cups pastel miniature
marshmallows
DIRECTIONS:
1. Drain cherries, reserving 1/3 cup juice (save remaining juice for another use). Cut cherries in half; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and reserved cherry juice until smooth. Fold in whipped cream. Fold in cherries, pineapple, fruit cocktail, peaches, bananas and marshmallows. Transfer to a serving bowl. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

First time I tried to order a gin tonic in Berlin and ended up with the answer - "we only have whisky w/coke". Excuse me?! Is that the way to treat whisky?
Not in my view.

And we always have the lufisk and the fermented herring... so maybe I should just shut up.
But the salad Anjila describes above is soooo..... to much, put of words. Really.

And Clam - the salad my friend was as described; a green salad with whipped cream. I remember how horrified she was.

A big potluck thing around here is a dish called a salad, but I think it is a fine dessert. Salad for me has to crunch. The dish is: 1 container cottage cheese, 1 container Cool Whip, one package Jello (your choice flavor), 1 can drained crushed pineapple, one can drained mandarin oranges (you can change the fruit to suit). Separately, most of these items are despicable, but together, yum! Some people put nuts in it, but I don't like my desserts to crunch.

Ooops, just remembered this is the pedigree thread. Sigh, it always returns to food anyway.

#148 - This looks like a variation on the "ambrosia salad" that is popular at family & social gatherings, potluck dinners, etc. Some recipes add shredded coconut. My sweet tooth may have gotten its start when I was a young lad from the maraschino cherries in these salads.

cad lib - I lived in Pa once, in Lancaster and was amazed to be shown the State stores, too young to go in. I don't know how you survive. I can pull into the petrol station on the way home and come back loaded up with alcohol. They even started selling Georgian "Champagne" at about €4 a bottle. As for whisky I prefer either Laphroaig or Bowmore. I visited the island once many years ago and stayed in a B&B opposite the Bowmore distillery and woke in the morning to the smell of malting Barley - aaah. Now I live in a small village with more cows than people - aaaarrrrgh. I've also just asked my german colleague about the beer and coca-cola thing to be told that it was fashionable to drink red wine with coc-cola which sounds even worse. My wife has a preference for whisky with ginger ale, which whilst not condoning I must admit to understanding and preferring to some of the alternatives. That said I did buy her last christmas a big cheap bottle of blended whisky to keep her hands off my single malts.

The ONLY time I'll put ice in wine is if I am at someone else's house and they serve some, how shall I put this politely, cheap white wine at room temp, and there's nothing else to drink. :oS Even then it pains me to do it.

I refuse to drink white zin, or any other pink American wines. I'll take a beer instead, if there is no other choice. I have had some tasty dry rosés from Spain.

Hera, good luck with the move to Amsterdam and particularly good luck with the administration. I moved to the Netherlands 4 years ago with my family and have since moved on and whilst the bureaucracy is intensely frustrating it's worth it - and if you don't get it perfect they are, in my experience, amongst the most forgiving and understanding people around. Let me know if you want any help.

Thanks for that, Barry; I have started to get a bit annoyed at the circular logic of getting a permit for my US fiance to live with me legally in Amsterdam. I agree about the Dutch: they're fantastic people and I can't wait to live there. My (horrible) attempts at Dutch are always met with politeness and good humour. The food, the culture, the history: there's no downside to the Netherlands that I can discern. Except those dipthongs - straight from outer space...

If one of my journalist friends hadn't written a series of articles about trafficking in the AmRo harbours I'd very likely agree with you on The Netherlands... but some of those Philipine girls... 25 yrs, no teeth left, pratically living hooked up to their syringes, used as the cheapest matress available and the discarded.

We have a problem with something like that here in Sweden as well (mostly russian and eastern europeans, though) but our legislation makes it possible to find and judge the guilty part /not the girls - the ones making the money out of the business!/ in an effective way.

Things have changed and are still changing Busifer. It still exists, but they are working hard to rectify it.
Some of the women are deported, but if they are proven to be victims and have nothing to go back to (which is sadly often the case) there are also possibilities to stay here.
Prostitution is now a big point on the political agenda. Some windows in Amsterdam are now being closed because of possible criminal involvement and illegal prostitutes are "hunted" (very much the wrong word, but I don't have a dictionary handy). However the problem is moving to the escort-branche and the openborder policy of the EU isn't helping much either. Women can move here fairly easy, sometimes by free will, sometimes not.

HOW DID YOU FIND THE GREEN DRAGON?: The name struck whilst browsing, as did the range of conversations and the niceness level.

FAVORITE AUTHOR(s): Unfair question for anyone in this organization. Tolkien leads the list, as does Neil Gaiman (I didn't know he mentioned LT - I like him more now!) Orson Scott Card is always weirdly fun. It's hard to pick and choose - I read a lot, and have lots of authors on my 'read everything they've written' list.

FAVORITE BOOK(s): see above commentary. I love the Foundation series, and have just had fun re-reading the Anne of Green Gables set, although the last is a sad ending to the lot. I'd say my longest book obsession is finding a NICE copy of The Hundred and One Dalmations, Taash and the Jesters and Kashka. I will also agree with whoever posted that children's books are often much more fun than adult ones. Current raves = The Arrival, and The Invention of Hugo Cabret, as well as the Ranger's Apprentice series (although they are arriving too slowly for me to be happy with the publisher)

FAVORITE DRINK: English Breakfast Tea, imported, brewed strong, then well chilled and iced.
