Hello All, I am new to LibraryThing. I didn't win any books for Feb. I was wondering if that is normal. Any advice would be helpful.
Yes, this is normal. There are always more requests than books available. But more importantly, books are given out based on matches to your library. If you don't catalogue more than four books, you may never win.
Considering that there are a LOT less books than people asking for books, there are a lot of people that do not get books.
Basically in ER you can win 1 book per month (2 in some special cases).
One of the things you need to know is that the program is NOT random: the algorithm selects the best reader for a book based on the libraries of the people that had requested the book. Additionally, the libraries used for the comparison are snapshots of the libraries in the day the list was added (so people cannot cheat and add similar books after they see what is offered). Or so I thought -- seems like maybe it is not the case (or not always)
Now - noone knows what the algorithm is but we kinda know that:
- it compares your library to the book
- it is looking for specific books "similar" to the book you had requested.
Considering that your account is 3 days old and have 4 books, I would not have expected you to win any books. So add some more books in your library (libraries with less than 200 books can win and had won so you can stay with a free account and still win...) but you still need to have some books added.
Just for reference, I won my first book after 5 months. I had a little complication of being in Europe and there are not that many books available for there but ...
Good luck in the next months -- and keep in mind that you might not always win - as I said, more people than books so a lot of people do not get any :)
When I first joined I won books 3 months in a row but then didn't win for 4 months straight. Now I win one every 2-3 months.
Additionally, the libraries used for the comparison are snapshots of the libraries in the day the list was added (so people cannot cheat and add similar books after they see what is offered). Or so I thought -- seems like maybe it is not the case (or not always)
What makes you think that's not the case? I've certainly never heard that they've changed the system to make it gameable -- have you heard otherwise?
Someone that registered in Feb reported a win yesterday... So I am not sure, that's all.
I always thought it is a snapshot.
Are you sure that was an Early Reviewer win rather than a Member Giveaway? They're often confused...
> 10 No, it was an ER book. They joined in late February, but to be fair, it's a paid membership and they've catalogued a good number of books. It doesn't looked like anything was gamed. Maybe the algorithm accounts for whole libraries being added rather than just select books?
Or maybe the algorithm has become self-aware? In which case I just want to add that the algorithm is very pretty (or handsome) and extremely wise.
That was my first thought as well but at least a very fast check showed the book as ER. Haven't check if there is a MG for the same book though
Nah, I am not saying that it was gamed. I was surprised because I did not think you can win based on books added after the list went live :)
I'd imagine that entirely new members are treated differently with respect to snapshots. For older members the snapshot is so utterly vital to prevent gaming the system that I'd be shocked beyond belief if they eliminated it.
This group does not accept members.
