I haven't been reading much ... at all. I used to read 50 books a year. Somehow I dwindled down to zero.

I'd like to learn how to read again.

Does anyone have any recommendations for books published recently. Where should I begin?

Of course it all depends on what your reading interests are. I'd recommend checking Library Journal and Booklist reviews. There you'll find recent and upcoming fiction and nonfiction book reviews written by library professionals. I contribute horror fiction reviews about every-other-month to Library Journal. The books I receive to review are advanced copies of books that usually are published within 6 months or so.

Wow, can you send me a note and let me know how to sign up to write reviewsl?

To apply to be a reviewer you'll need to fill out a questionnaire and submit a resume, along with two writing samples. More information can be found here: http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/about/review-for-library-journal/?ref=menu.
