Anyone reading a book from the list this month?

I am determined to finish Middlemarch this month. I am also halfway through White Teeth (on the combined list I believe).

Hard Times - it is taking me a long time to get through this relatively short Dickens novel. I'm afraid something bad is going to happen to my favorite character and I don't want to read that. But I'll get through it.

#3, of course something bad will happen to your favorite character. It's not called "Hard Times" for nothing. Right up there with "Bleak House" in the give-away titles sweepstakes.

I'm listening to Siddhartha on audiobooks and simply hating it, but at least it's short. I thought that I should have a break from Hilary Mantel & the Tudors. On paper I am about to finish One Hundred Years of Solitude, another of those long long books that grows on you as it goes along. When White Teeth arrives on Thursday I will begin reading that.

Right up there with "Bleak House" in the give-away titles sweepstakes.

But I didn't find Bleak House at all bleak. I was puzzled by the name.

Finished up with White Teeth over the weekend and I'm now back to reading the wonderful! Memories of Rain before moving on to the second group read for the month: The Red and the Black.

I'm reading The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. After that I'll probably read The Interesting Narrative in the life of Olaudah Equiano.

I have several books Im working on. Hogfather is a re-read that is just as good as the first time. Then I listening to White Teeth for a group read and also going to re-read The Red and The Black for a group read also. And then trying to find something to off set Don Quixote I started The Blind Assassin which I am enjoying very much. So to say the least Don Quixote is taking a back seat for now.

Today I started the audiobook of White Tiger, and I'm enjoying it very much so far. The reader is very good.

I finished The Expedition of Humphrey Clinker a few days ago. I'm slowing making my way though Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit (an odd bit of 16th century fluff and fancy). I was also reading Foucault's Pendulum but just realized we had a group read of White Teeth this month, so I put that on the reading shelf too.

I'm still plugging away at The Red and the Black by Stendhal for the Sept group read. I'm enjoying it. I hope to also read White Teeth by Zadie Smith (the other Sept group read).

I'm reading White Teeth for the group read, too. I haven't read very far yet.

Just started The Thin Man - really fun so far. But the most alcoholic book start I've come across in some time (always putting Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to one side!).

I'm about a third of the way through The Namesake and it's hard to put down. Love the writing style!

I have a gigantic book from the list that I'm rereading: The Brothers Karamazov. It's kind of sucking the momentum from all my other reads, so I'm a bit stalled on the list for the time being. I do want to check out White Teeth, but so many books on the TBR, so little time. I'm getting married in less than a month, so there's a lot to get done... not as much time to read.

Hi there,

I just finished Naked Lunch and previously read Burroughs' Junky and Queer and figured I'd keep the theme of drug-addled junkies and their preoccupations going a bit longer with Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh.

Gotta love themed reads!

#245--Drunkard by Emile Zola--4 Stars. A very good story lashing out at the evils of alcoholism much in the same vein as The Jungle lashes out at societal injustice. The heroine in this story plays the role of enabler which eventually leads to her down-fall and her becoming the victim of her own alcoholism. Zola has an excellent story telling ability. He keeps the story moving toward its inevitable end. I look forward to more Zola.

#17 LOL I was just thinking this when I saw your post - there seems to be quite the theme between all of us!

Also started The Red and the Black - it's actually lighter than I expected and I'm quite enjoying it.

Finally finished The Red and the Black. Keeping with the color theme, my next 1,001 book will be On the Black Hill.

Started listening to The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. While I find it surprisingly entertaining, I doubt I'll get through the 21+ hours this month.

Oh, Good Lord! I finally finished listening to the Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe which I started for the group read back in May.

What a nice little tidy package ending!

This was perhaps my worst reading experience, EVER. I know, I know, some of you loved it, but not me.

Review will follow later.

I am about 1/2 way through Eugenie Grandet. There is a very interesting cast of characters and the dad is infuriating.

#246--White Teeth--3.5 Stars--Easy read about mixed up families and confused and clashing cultures in England during the last half of the 20th century

I am enjoying Là-Bas (The Damned) by Joris-Karl Huysmans.

Crime and Punishment I am really enjoying it, with the help of a few online sites. Enotes.com is very good, with the enhanced etext. Otherwise, I would have needed a glossary. This is my first time reading anything by a Russian author, and I'm enjoying it tremendously!

#247--Strait is the Gate--3 Stars--This book deals with the affects of adolescent experiences on the choices made in later life--primarily who, why, and how the characters select their life path ways and partners. It is not a difficult read, but it deals with a difficult subject and the relationships between the characters are both subtle and complex.

I'm about half way through listening to The Sun Also Rises narrated by William Hurt. This is my first Hemingway since reading The Old Man and the Sea in high school, and even though the pace is slow, I'm really enjoying it. They've finally made it to Spain, so the pace will probably pick up a notch.

#248--The Yellow Wallpaper--4.5 Stars--A short, short story of a woman going insane. I rated it so high primarily because of the technique used by the writer. The author uses a very small space of time and text to tell a compelling and vivid tale.

I'm reading Shikasta presently, a foray into science fiction by Doris Lessing.

I finally finished my audio book of The Satanic Verses. What a rich and complex story! For me it was very difficult to follow it on audio, but also very rewarding - great narrator. Next up might be The Monk for Halloween reading.
