Hi Fellow Washingtonians,

I was just made aware that the Barnes and Noble in Washington, DC in Union Station is closing at the end of the year. Has the world gone mad!!! And apparently it's not the bookstore but Union Station itself that is asking Barnes and Noble to leave. Is there anything we can do?

Nooooooooooo I love that Barnes & Noble! We just went there during an LT meetup in June!

Aw, so sad. I don't think that I ever bought a book from there, but I do like to pop in and get a magazine for the train.

What are they going to replace it with? Travelers love the ability to buy a book before they get on a train. (Or at least I do!)

And don't send me into those "news" shops that only sell NYT Bestsellers in hardback for almost double the cover price.

No, this can't happen.

Where did you find this note about them closing the store? I don't see it on the links provided...

Here's an article about the closing: http://dcist.com/2012/10/barnes_noble_closing_union_station.php

After it closes, the Penn Quarter store will be the only remaining Barnes & Noble in Washington DC. Thank goodness we have several indies.

Good(ish) news!

"Twenty-four hours after saying Barnes & Noble planned to close its store in Union Station at the end of the year, a company spokeswoman said Thursday that the company has received and accepted a one-year extension from its landlord and will keep the store open at least through 2013."

That's a small sigh of relief. Now I don't HAVE to go through Union Station during my vacation trip to the Smithsonian. At least not this year. :>

Doesn't mean I won't. My to read pile is shrinking after al. :>
