what kind of horror does he write? what of his books are more interesting to start with?

I love John Saul. His books break down into two formulas, they are either hundred year old ghost stories (something evil happened a hundred years ago and now the spirit takes revenge on the new family in town) or technology gone crazy. My favorites are Suffer the Children, Sleepwalk, Creature, The God Project... I think his earlier stuff is better.

#2: I totally agree with your John Saul formulas, as well as his older books being better. Probably my favorites by him were The Unwanted, The Unloved, and Second Child.
