The last thread was quite long so I thought it was time for another. Have I got the right number?
I have a recent copy of Good Behaviour by Molly Keane going spare. It was printed in 2007 and has a red and black 20s (?) style design on the cover. The introduction is by Marian Keyes. I'm happy to send anywhere but outside Europe (from UK) will go surface mail.

Love the cover -- and if you don't mind sending across the pond, would love the book too. I'm certainly in no hurry.

#2 Certainly. I've just checked my PMs and I have your address from two and a half years ago so, unless you have moved in the meantime, I will get it in the post to you soon. It will be surface, so don't wait with bated breath! (Is that right LizzyB?)

Love it!

Peanut butter is said to be most effective, according to my new mousetraps.
How have I lived to the ripe old age of 48 without having come across the term 'Troublesome Pairs'? I'm familiar with the concept of the often-confused words, just have not heard this name before.
Is there a special word for how people misuse 'Fine-toothed comb', rendering it 'Fine toothcomb'? They even put the stress on the word tooth, not comb. Whether or not this error has a name, it's a clear sign that people have lost sight of the meaning of the image. I shouldn't let it annoy me, but it does, every time!

I think that cheese is the correct answer although Genny currently knows a lot more than I do about peanut butter and mice (I'm sorry, Genny). I've never heard anybody say "fine toothcomb," but I'll listen for it. I think I'll be hysterical rather than annoyed. That reminds me (lots of things do; I'm sorry again) about the kid who wrote that he had made a "big missed ape." I also wondered what they thought they were saying when they played the vocabulary card game and said, "Gold fish."
12LyzzyBee
I don't thing "Troublesome Pairs" is a thing as such, it's just what I called my series of posts on oft-confused words when I started it up. I am going to do fine-toothed comb soonish (I have a whole stack of them put aside to write).
13gennyt
#11 Fine tooth-combs seem to be a commonly occurring gadget over here. I frequently hear politicians and other people interviewed on the radio talking about 'going through this issue with a fine tooth-comb...'. I'm glad if the habit has not spread across the Atlantic yet!
#12 I googled Troublesome Pairs, and found quite a bit about them - but maybe those were your posts?

Ah yes, lots more uses. I do get Google searches for the phrase hitting my website every day and when I search mine are at the top, but that might be Google trying to be helpful!
15lauralkeet
Would "fine tooth-comb" be considered a malapropism? It's a funny one to be sure, conjuring up an image of hairy teeth in need of combing (ew).
16rainpebble
And ewwwwwwww, Laura.
In my neck of the woods (the Pacific Northwest) we have used the 'fine tooth-comb' for eons but I had never heard of 'troublesome pairs' other than from people speaking of their youngsters.

Owing to my rather rash purchase of a Virago box set in a charity shop (see pix here http://kaggsysbookishramblings.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/fortuitous-finds/) I have a couple of duplicates:
Provincial Daughter
Good Behaviour
Both are modern covers, not greens, but the Molly Keane is the woman in a pink dress photo style cover, not the most recent type with the art deco style drawings.
Happy to send anywhere tho will be surface mail if overseas!

Karen, I would be thrilled to have Provincial Daughter if you truly don't mind sending her to North Carolina. I love surface mail!!! It gives time for lots of anticipation.

My mother-in-law has been to the seaside for a short break and brought back for me the recent set of Daphne du Maurier books - Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel, Jamaica Inn, The House on the Strand and The Birds and Other Stories. She found them in a charity shop but they are brand new and unread. Although I have other editions of all of them, the only Virago copy was My Cousin Rachel so this duplicate is now available for any member of the Virago group. It's the same latest design cover and is unread. Usual conditions apply: I'll send anywhere but it goes surface outside Europe
35janeajones
I'd love to have My Cousin Rachel, Kerry, if you don't mind sending it across the pond -- I'm in no hurry.

Certainly, Jane. I'll get it in the post soon.

I have replaced my Penguin green copy of At the Still Point with one that does not have an inch strip cut from the front cover and is not stamped with "Not for Resale." It's a perfectly good reading copy, and I'll be happy to send it anywhere in the continental USA.
38Soupdragon
Hi, I've been absent from the group for a short while and am a bit behind with threads. Soon after thinking I had a nice long Easter break, I was asked to cover for someone doing my job in another office for a couple of months, while they undergo medical treatment. So I currently have two (part time) jobs!
However...duplicates!
My local charity shop had one of these in their free box, along with the usual unsaleable sewing machine instructions etc, and the other book was for sale for pennies. I already have them both but obviously couldn't just leave them there. Shout if you're interested. They are both the original green Virago Modern Classic editions in quite nice condition. I am happy to post anywhere but will probably use surface mail for overseas.
My Career Goes Bung - Miles Franklin
Armour Wherein He Trusted - Mary Webb

I am doing some purging as the books are really starting to take over my house. I have some greenies to offer:
I Will Not Serve by Eveline Mahyere
The Optimist's Daughter by Eudora Welty
Mary Lavelle by Kate O'Brien
Brother Jacob by George Eliot
And one of the newer greenies:
The Constant Sinner by Mae West (Green spine, green band down left cover and apple logo)
I'd like to send these stateside; multiples are okey-dokey.
I'll probably be posting more on PBS and will undoubtedly bring some with me to the Philly meetup in May.

43Cariola
41 & 42> Sure--just PM your addresses. I may not get them out until Friday as I'm doing a major purge and just listed a bunch on PBS that are going fast.
44LyzzyBee
Oh dear - Soupdragon could I possibly ask for the Mary Webb, and / or Cariola, I would love to read the Eliot, having expanded my reading of her from repeated readings of Middlemarch to include Daniel Deronda and finding that it's my top book of the year so far. I know that's greedy, though, and I do have lots of books, so please only pick me if no one else asks for them! Thank you!

Cariola, I would love to have the The Constant Sinner if it is still available please.

Of course you can, Liz. I don't think I have your address so PM me and I'll get it sent off.
Funnily enough the "bookmark" I'm currently using is a postcard you sent me along with Dusty Answer. I read Dusty Answer some time ago, but the postcard seems to have migrated!

54> A number of those are mine. Belva. And I've also posted several others that aren't showing up as VMCs in the titles, although if you click on them, you will see that they are Virago publications--some of them greenies. Check my PBS book shelf--same name over there.

>56 Cariola:, 57: Debora has a gold mine on PBS! I just snagged a couple of her books because they were on my wish list. I've had really good luck acquiring VMCs from PBS, and primarily through the wish list -- about 1/3 to 1/2 of my collection in fact. It lacks the thrill of wandering into an Oxfam shop and emerging staggering under the weight of green spines. But since I don't have that option, it's the next best thing!
59kaggsy
58: Sounds lovely if you are stateside! I am doing reasonaly ok with ReadItSwapIt (slightly better than with Bookmooch tbh) and picked up copies of The Children and The Post Office Girl and The Dud Avocado so far - I quite like doing the direct swap thingy tho I wish people would reply a bit quicker - if they don't want to swap I just wish they'd say straight away!
60Cariola
I'll give you all a heads-up whwen I post more VMCs on PBS. It probably won't be for awhile as I'm shipping out almost 40 books this week and am in the midst of the end-of-semester crunch.
61kaggsy
So, I really need to take the little purple notebook with my Virago lists in it *everywhere* because you never know where they will turn up - today in the lobby of the hospital where I was taking Youngest Child for physio - and I picked up The Magic Toyshop for 25p in a modern cover because I didn't recognise it and of course I have a green!
So basically it is on offer here before I put it on Bookmooch or ReadItSwapIt or something - let me know if anyone wants it. I would probably send slow boat to overseas, though will need to check postage as we have just had another hike in prices over here... :(((

I also got a few of Deb's from my wishlist on PBS. Annoyingly I was offered Gerald one day after I bought it online but them's the breaks. I have got a lot of Viragos off PBS, and occasionally I've got them in such beautiful condition I am left to wonder where they've been sitting all these years. Only two Persephones though.

I think everyone here knows the 'personal' relationship that I have 'enjoyed' with Angela Carter. But The Magic Toyshop that kaggsy has put up to offer is truly a magical book. I couldn't believe that I was enthralled by a Carter but it was a 4 1/2 star read for me and I had to eat crow.
So grab it up someone. Don't miss out.

OK Belva, I blame you for this.
Karen, if you don't get any takers in the UK, and if postage isn't prohibitive, I would be glad to adopt Ms. Carter. But if you find it easier to list it on Readitswapit, I won't be the least bit offended.

Today was our library's semi-annual book sale, and For the First Time Ever, I found a VMC there! E. H. Young's The Vicar's Daughter. I already have a copy (which I knew when I bought it), so it's available for adoption. Stateside, only, I fear. It's the green spine. There is a small patch missing from the cover right about at the pianist's left elbow. I think a price sticker may have been pulled off there previously. Anyone?
69Cariola
I posted some more VMCs on PBS last night. I guess there has been some curiosity about why I am doing this, so here's what I replied to Elaine:
"I am not getting rid of all of my VMCs, but yes, I am making a major purge. The reason is very simple: I just don't have enough room for them all. I live in a small two-bedroom duplex with no basement, a one-car garage, and very little closet space, and since I am an academic by profession, my booksheleves are mostly filled with books that I need for my teaching and research. Counting the VMCs,I have well over 1000 TBRs (probably more like 1500) stacked up all over the house. Boxes fill the bedroom closets and shelves, and there are stacks on top of my dresser and covering a lot of the floor space in my office/second bedroom. It was just getting ridiculous, plus one of my cats has been stressing out lately, and I think the crowdedness has been a contributing factor. Obviously, I wasn't really able to enjoy the collection that way, and I knew that I would never be able to read them all in this lifetime. So I've been reading the blurbs and listing those that I either did read and didn't particularly enjoy, those that aren't my cup of tea (fantasy, etc.), and even a few that I did like but know that I won't reread (since I rarely reread books unless I am teaching them).
"That's all there is to it, and I'm really OK with giving these up to people who will love them and have been waiting for them. I've been posting them on PBS not because I need the points for more books--heaven knows I don't want any more right now!--but I will use them to get the mysteries my brother is always asking me to look for. I get a kick out of being able to have them sent to him--and he has the room to store them.
As I said, I'm not giving away my entire collection, and there are still some VMCs that I am avidly seeking, so I will still be hanging around the group.
I'm keeping all Whartons, Whites, Taylors, and most Cathers, as well as other favorites."
I was starting to feel like one of those people on 'Hoarders' so the purging has felt pretty good!
Once I get through the entire collection, I will focus on reading more of them and will be giving them away one or two at a time. At that point, I can offer more of them on this thread and will be able to send some across the pond as well. I wish that I could do that now, but considering that I sent out 45 books (most of them VMCs) this week, I just can't afford the additional cost of sending books overseas.
I will also bring any VMCs that I've posted that haven't been snapped up by May 17 to the Philly meetup.

Yes, I can actually get from my bed to the bathroom without tripping over a stack of books now!
The previous week, I purged from home and office another two boxes of books, 40 VHS tapes, and about a dozen DVDs and donated them to the department's scholarship sale. I think that may have been what got me started. I plan to retire in 2-3 years, and I started to realize what a massive job it will be to clear out the file cabinets and shelves at work. I have SO many books, both there and at home, that I will never use or read again once I am no longer teaching. It will be another major purge of a different sort. The grad students at BookMooch will be thrilled.

I'm very impressed and yes, purging is good for the soul! I always feel better when I have a bit of a clear out, and tho I'm not at retirement point yet, I will have to clear out some stuff so my children don't one day have to deal with it all. At least my daughters will fight over my Virago collection, and I'm sure middle child will take good care of my Agatha Christies. It's the Russian books I worry about most.....!
73janeajones
I had new bookshelves built a couple of years ago and managed to get rid of most of my bookpiles in the house, but they've started to appear again -- I'm definitely due for some kind of weed-out. And I'll have to do something about the books in my office at school....
74lauralkeet
While we have plenty of clearing-out opportunities at our house too, we recently added some new bookshelves. So I find it kind of ironic that Deborah is purging her VMCs and sending them about 2 hours down the road to me.
76romain
I have been purging my books for ages now - hundreds over the last couple of years - just not my Viragos and Persephones because I have made a nice little hobby out of finding the entire collection. Until I was about 40 I was a terrible slob but as I get older I value clean lines and cleared surfaces. At the moment, the downstairs of my house is very pleasant, the upstairs not so much. My mother was tidy for its own sake. I have become tidy because I find I function better in a stress free environment and because I am very keen not to have an 'old person's house' - full of useless clutter that the kids have to toss out when you're dead.
77lauralkeet
>75 kaggsy:: I'm afraid you're right!
78Cariola
76> Barbara, that's my fear, too. When I had surgery in November 2011, my daughter drove up from TN to stay with me for a few days and FINALLY took back all the stuff I had been complaining about keeping for her for years--the high chair, the doll house, the baby toys, the child's rocker, the clown lamp, the bags of stuffed animals, etc. that were taking up huge amounts of space in my garage, closets, and spare room. Well, all that empty space is now filled with boxes of books and what you call "useless clutter that the kids have to toss out when you're dead."
I started collecting Persephones but have stopped, unless a nice swap copy happens my way. They are expensive and rarely come up on the swap sites. I probably have about 20 of them and at this point don't plan to give them up until I have time to read them.

We have told our nieces and nephew where the good stuff is stored and advised them to torch the place when we die. That's all I can do at present. I guess I'm very immature, but I'm still collecting.

82Heaven-Ali
collecting books? what coukld possibly be wrong in that? :)
84elkiedee
Lizzie, I hope I'm still collecting when I'm your age. If I can get bargain Kindle replacements for some of my books I will clear those out, but not the Viragos and Persephones. I had a £15 shopping voucher to spend, and Waterstones booksellers would accept it, and there were lots of display tables of various collectable editions - no Virago or Persephone, and they turned out to have none of the VMC Rumer Goddens in their flagship store! But the NYRB, Europa, Penguin Modern Classics are very attractive, I just have to resist getting too attached to collecting them.
85kdcdavis
#68: Linda, it looks like no one else has spoken for The Vicar's Daughter, and I would love to have it if it is still available! I have four of E.H. Young's books and have loved them all. I think you have my address from sending ET's Angel last year (which, by the way, I also loved!)...
86laytonwoman3rd
Katy, the book is yours. So glad to give it a good home. And yes, I still have your address. If I had seen this message before leaving for work this morning I could have put it in the mail today. But it will be on its way to you this week, for sure. ( I thought my offer might have gotten lost in all the "purging" messages above!)

Not Virago nor Persephone but I have two books that I have unwittingly duplicated. They are both brand new and thought they might be appropriate to offer here.
1. The Perfect Summer by Juliet Nicolson.
The author is the granddaughter of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson.
From the back of the book: "chronicles a glorious English summer a century ago, when the world was on the cusp of irrevocable change. In the summer of 1911 a new king was crowned and the aristocracy was at play, bounding from one house party to the next. At a debutante charity ball where the other girls came dressed as white swans, the striking Diana Manners made a late appearance as a black swan. The Ballets Russes arrived in London for the first time and people swarmed to Covent Garden to see Nijinsky's gravity-defying leaps. But cracks in the social fabric had begun to show. The country was brought to a standstill by industrial strikes; led by the charismatic Ben Tillett, the Southampton Dockers' Union paralyzed shipping in the south, causing severe food shortages. The young Home Secretary Winston Churchill worried in his diary that "all the world is changing at once."
Through the tight lens of four months, Juliet Nicolson brings that portentous summer into crisp focus. Drawing on material from intimate and rarely seen sources, The Perfect Summer is a vividly rendered story of how, day by cloudless day, a nation began to lose its innocence."
(I can't remember if Elaine sent me a duplicate copy or if I got it from her on PBS but I saw and bought it forgetting that I had a copy coming. Doh! I obviously am keeping the copy I received from Elaine, ♥, and so am offering the new copy.)
The second is a book that I hadn't seen on my shelves for some time and I got a yen to have a reread for the umpteenth time. After bringing it home I came across my original copy. It is a long cherished classic from my childhood. A book beloved by many and also new.
2. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith.

Hi Belva: Id be very interested in The Perfect Summer if you're willing to send it this far. I am interested in this family and its many connections as well as the pre-war era. No problem with it going to someone else if it's too expensive though.

Liz, I'm pleased the book arrived safely. Jen, I forgot to say but I posted yours at the same time. I would imagine your wait will be somewhat longer though!
I now have these two duplicates to offer. They are both beautiful olive green VMCs, which I found impossible to leave behind when I spotted them alongside several other green spines in the window of one of the York Oxfam bookshops. (See fab finds thread). Both are uncreased and appear unread but the pages are tanned and with some foxing on the Storm Jameson.
Women Against Men - Storm Jameson
The Beauties and The Furies - Christina Stead
I am happy to post to anywhere but may use surface mail for overseas.

I have a duplicate copy of Year Before Last by Kay Boyle, which I am reading my other copy of right now and quite enjoying it. This is a good reading copy. No markings on the reading pages but inside both the front and back covers there is writing. The cover is nice but on the spine at both the top and bottom it looks as if there were stickers that someone peeled away, taking the 'green' with the stickers. So perhaps not a collectable copy for you puritans but perfectly good for reading.

# 109 Oh dear, Belva, I don't have Year Before Last & would be happy with a reading copy but I don't want to be greedy especially as I have just received another very nice book from you.
115rainpebble
No problem Grant. It's yours. I am currently reading it myself (my copy that is) and it written quite differently from anything I have read before.
I may not be able to mail it off until Tuesday or Wednesday. My days between last Friday and next Tuesday are taken up with mother. Taking her to consults, pre-surgical screening, and the surgery itself on Monday @ 5:15 A.M. with a 2 1/2 hour drive to get to hospital. I am wishing her daughter was younger right about now.
Will get the book off to you while she is recuping in hospital as I should have some spare time then.

Two brand-new Winifred Holtby titles going spare: South Riding and Anderby Wold. They are from the Book People set that I bought. I knew I already had a copy of South Riding but I hadn't noticed that I had an original green copy of Anderby Wold. I love the new covers but you can't beat an original green and there is limited space in my Virago book case so I can't justify keeping both!
125miss_read
May I have Anderby Wold if nobody else has claimed it?

Certainly, Helen. I know you won't want South Riding! Let me know your address.

OK, dupes time following my recent madness on the Book People. These are all Muriel Spark books as I replaced my second hand copies with new ones and they are here for anyone who wants them. I will send abroad but by surface mail, please!
Loitering with Intent - modern orange Virago cover, used but in good nick
The Comforters - ditto turqiose
Symposium - ditto blue
A Far Cry from Kensington - Penguin, a little worn but still perfectly readable
Give me a shout if you'd like any of these.

I've been doing some weeding from my bookshelves - nothing serious just some uneccessary duplicates - and I have a hardback copy of The Enchanted April to give away. It is in very good condition, complete with dustjacket, and, although it's not a Virago copy, it is a Virago title. Also a very nice Book Club edition of The Flight of the Falcon, again, complete with dustjacket.
I know this thread is meant for Viragos but I also have Penguin Classics copies of Middlemarch, Mary Barton and Three Gothic Novels to give away, if anyone is interested. All in good but used condition.

I have a duplicate copy of The Virago Book of Women Travellers available. I am so very sorry to have to say that I must limit my shipping to stateside for a time as our fortunes (;-), have declined somewhat with the hubby's retirement. I am hoping it will just be temporary and that I soon will be able to once again ship to the shores of the lands of my dreams.
I also have a couple of books that are not Virago but thought I would offer them here before putting them on PBS. They are:
Angela Thirkell's O, These Men, These Men &
Anita Brookner's A Start in Life or The Debut as it is known otherwise. The 1st is a Moyer Bell edition while the 2nd is a Triad Granada and is sized between the trade & the mass market paperback.

Elaine, of course you may have it. I believe (ahem) that I have your address.
I was up so late winding down from our trip home. All the way across the state in one day. But we had a wonderful, if exhausting, time with the grands & great grand. Four full days of chasing a 7 month old around our little trailer is hard on a 65 year old but we only get to see them a couple of times a year so I stole every moment I could to be with our little MacKenzie.
This is she:

I'm also hi-jacking the thread as the book I have to offer isn't a Virago but I know a lot of Viragoites also read Iris Murdoch. I have a spare copy of The Bell and although in good condition it is showing its age. It is a paperback edition printed 1981 and its cover is a still from the TV adaptation that was being shown at the time. It was neatly covered with clear self-adhesive film which has now yellowed so that Michael and Dora are strongly suntanned! Usual conditions, i.e. surface mail outside Europe

Belva, YAY! The Virago Book of Women Travellers arrived in the mail today, and I'm a happy camper. Thank you! I'm looking forward to the comments from Mary Morris who edited it too. (When you can't go yourself, you can read about going. I'm happy.)

At a library book sale last week I found a non-Virago copy of A Few Green Leaves. I already have a copy, but picked up this one for $1 in case anyone here might want it. Any US takers?
204elkiedee
203: Not in the US and don't need a copy of the book, but for clarification, there is no Virago edition of A Few Green Leaves , and it isn't likely to become one very soon as Macmillan have just brought it out in paper and ebook in the UK (Bello imprint). If no one's said yes please, you might want to repost on the next thread.
