Many of us mystery lovers can never get enough, so now that March Mystery reading is ending, and Murder and Mayhem doesn't arrive until MAY, April needs a thread for the mystery lovers to use for their literary investigations. So pull out your magnifying glass and join in here at SPRING SUSPENSE!

Here's the mysteries that I'm hoping to finish in April:

Book, Line, and Sinker
Diva Takes the Cake
Lost and Fondue
Night Watch
Rope
Stitch me Deadly
Threaded for Trouble

Great idea to continue the mystery theme into April. Thanks for setting it up! I've got 2 or 3 more Jack Reachers to read, plus a paranormal historical mystery (The Mystery Woman) that I got from the Early Review giveaway. A good start for Spring Suspense.

I'm hoping to read Dissolution, as well as continue on in a few series. Possibilities include:

The First Eagle
Hunting Badger
Messenger of Truth
Where Serpents Sleep
What Remains of Heaven
The Wailing Wind

Of course, I'm always looking for more good ideas . . .

Glad you decided to do this. Not sure which mysteries I'll read this month. Right now I'm 3/4 of the way through Hail to the Chef -- which I may or may not finish today (March); I'm just starting Faithful Place, so that one will definitely be in my April reading mix.

My April list includes only a few mysteries:

Red Bones by Ann Cleeves
Free Fire by C.J. Box
The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey (if the audio is available from Overdrive when I'm ready for the next audiobook)

Here are some potential reads for me:

A Murder in Passing by Mark de Castrique - I'll be nearing completion but probably won't finish it tonight so it will be an April 1 finish.
The Diva Digs Up the Dirt by Krista Davis
Bagpipes, Brides, and Homicides by Kaitlyn Dunnett
Bookplate Special by Lorna Barrett
Harbor Ice by K. D. Mason
Live Free or Die by Jessie Crockett

I need to find an audio book to download from the library, and it will probably be a mystery too. Since it is statewide competition on those titles, it's a bit hard to predict what will be available when I look.

8 > I'm liking Hail to the Chef, and zipping right through it.

9 > Carrie, I read Red Bones a while back, and liked it. In fact, I've enjoyed that whole series.

I finished Messenger of Truth, which was much better than the previous Maisie Dobbs book (Pardonable Lies). And I must say that, even though I don't always love the books, I love the vintage feel of their cover art. It really sets the mood.

I'm glad the Spring Suspense is being continued. I just discovered the Mystery month read and missed the month of March. But, I'm a mystery reader so hope to join in the April read. I will finish tonight The Cat Who Lived High by Lilian Jackson Braun so that will go into my April mystery. Also, today I checked out at the public library the following two books:

Black Orchids By Rex Stout
Maisie Dobbs By Jacqueline Winspear

>9 cbl_tn:, 11 Carrie and Terri - I'm another fan of Cleeves' Shetland series. I hear there's a new one, too.

My current mystery (on audio) is Louise Penny's latest, The Beautiful Mystery. Thank goodness for Ralph Cosham's narration. The mystery is a little slow, but I am enjoying the side issues.

Started these back in March and hope to finish them this month.

I am about half way through Cat Striking Back by Shirley Rosseau Murphy. Different!

Half way through A Great Deliverance which is also enjoyable.

A quarter of the way through No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy/

And about half way through Survivor in Death by J. D. Robb which I am finding riveting. Definitely going to have to go and start at the beginning of this series.

AND ***dancing with delight*** I just finished listening to The Coroner's Lunch by Colin Cotterill and loved it!! I am about to check the library website to see if I can get the next one!

Mostly through with Sansom's Heartstone, latest of the Matthew Shardlake mysteries set in Tudor England. This one's the best so far but a bit more of a commitment than usual - about twice as long as each of the earlier ones.

Oh my...twice as long? Something to look forward to!

I finished Reunion in Death and started Purity in Death. Could it be I'm hooked on this series? Cathy's way ahead of me, and Caro I think has read them all.

> 19 Joe,
oh, no, you misunderstand! I just started with Survivor in Death and am astonished that I have not discovered this author before. I have not read any of the other Death books. I will be starting at the beginning once I finish this one!

Apr 8, 2013, 2:20 pm

Ah, gotcha, Cathy. Yeah, Naked in Death is the first. I think Caro may have pointed me to it way back when. The good news is you have lots of entertaining reading ahead of you!

The "In Death" series is great fun - popcorn for the mind! She usually publishes two a year, so you'll have to hurry to get caught up....

I finished two more Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries: Where Serpents Sleep and What Remains of Heaven. Things are really starting to heat up for poor Sebastian.

I finished the latest Library Lover's Mystery Book, Line, and Sinker

I'm listening to an audio of Heather Graham's Deadly Night. The mystery is OK, the New Orleans atmosphere is great -- but the romance is corny. I'm trying to enjoy the mystery while rolling my eyes at references to the guy's steel-blue eyes and chiseled chin, etc. -- and fast-forwarding through the heavy breathing parts.

I'm also reading Death on Demand by Carolyn G. Hart; I'm not particularly liking the characters. My e-book now is Faithful Place by Tana French; I'm liking that a lot. And I've just been notified that the library audio of A Dedicated Man by Peter Robinson (Inspector Banks series) is now waiting for me.

Oh, great idea to continue the mystery reads with Spring Suspense. As a lover of mysteries, I always have a few planned. Hopefully in April I will read: Red Bones by Ann Cleeves, Flood by Andrew Vachss, Double Indemnity by James M. Cain and Devil-Devil by Graeme Kent. I would also like to squeeze in Before the Poison by Peter Robinson if I can.

Apr 9, 2013, 5:18 pm

>22 Dejah_Thoris: I have to admit, Dejah, one of the appeals of the in Death series is the difficulty catching up! I started late in the game with the Jack Reacher series, for example, and had a whole lot of fun reading through the series, but then I caught up. Now I have to wait a year or so for each new one to come out. I'm a long ways away from that happening with the in Death books!

Just finished The Devil You know by Mike Carey. Quite the urban fantasy noir mystery.

Apr 18, 2013, 12:03 pm

I've picked up The Bad Quarto by Jill Paton Walsh. it's her own series, featuring Imogen Quy, the matron of a Cambridge college who investigates mysteries with an academic twist. Previous one I read was about mathematics & quilting (yes, one of the more unusual combinations!), this one promises to be about Hamlet.

I finished Faithful Place by Tana French -- very good. Am currently reading Karin Fossum's Black Seconds.

(On the non-fiction front, The Destiny of the Republic has a certain suspenseful air, though I know from history class that President Garfield really did die in the end.)

I'm reading Sandstorm by James Rollins. Quite the madcap adventure thriller. With archaeology!

I think the only book I've read so far this month that qualifies is Free Fire by C.J. Box. It certainly had plenty of suspense!

I started listening to The Vanishing of Katharina Linden yesterday. It is my commute book and so far the narrator is really good and I am enjoying it. The story is set in Germany and starts during Carnival so I am getting a little of the flavor of that celebration along with the mystery.

I am just starting to read Naked In Death By J. D. Robb tonight. Someone here on LT mentioned this book for a mystery, so I checked it out of my public library recently. My library has it labeled as Fiction, but 20 pages in looks like a who-dun-it to me. I haven't figured out how the library determines some books fiction and some mystery. It's a mystery to me, so it's great!

Lots of suspense in my reading this month so far. To recap:

Hail to the Chef by Julie Hyzy
Deadly Night by Heather Graham (AUDIO) from library
Death on Demand by Carolyn G. Hart
A Dedicated Man by Peter Robinson (AUDIO from library)
Faithful Place by Tana French (e-book from library)
The Merlot Murders by Ellen Crosby (AUDIO)
Black Seconds by Karin Fossum (Mystery Fiction)

Even several of my my non-fiction reads have involved crime:

American Lightning by Howard Blum (AUDIO NON-FICTION)
Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard (mix of e-book and audio book)

Next up on audio is Place of Execution by Val McDermid. Not sure if I'll finish it this month, or if it will be part of May Murder & Mayhem, for which the annual thread is now up:

Since the 8th, I've read quite a few mysteries, including Murder on Astor Place, Where Shadows Dance, An Incomplete Revenge, Mr. Churchill's Secretary, Among the Mad, and Murder on St. Mark's Place.

I've also read one very good suspense novel: Code Name Verity.

Unfortunately my April reading plans didn't quite go as I had planned. I managed to finish Devil-Devil and I am currently reading Flood, but I will probably have to re-shelve Red Bones and Double Indemnity.

I finished the really good thriller suspense mystery The Vanishing of Katharina Linden by Helen Grant tonight. In my opinion this is a very under appreciated novel. This book managed to combine old German folktales with a very modern murder mystery set in a small town in the Eifel region of Germany. It had thrills and suspense as well as daring-do by a pair of unlikely heroes. This book was on the Alex Award list. This is a list of adult books recommended for young adults. It deserved to be on this list. If you like murder mysteries find this book and read it! You won't be sorry.

I finished The King's Jar a few days ago - a murder mystery with an art & archaeology setting. I hope to finish Red Bones by the end of the month, as well as the audio of A Fatal Winter.

My April reads which fit the Spring Suspense theme were:

Code Blue - Richard Mabry
The Book of Old Houses - Sarah Graves
A Death on the Wolf - G. M. Frazier
People of the Book - Geraldine Brooks
The Man Who Smiled - Henning Mankell
The Cranefly Orchid Murders - Cynthia Riggs

Favorites: Mistress of the Art of Death, People of the Book.

I read quite a few that fit here in April as well:

The Poet - by Michael Connelly
Sandstorm - James Rollins
The Keeper of Lost Causes - Jussi Adler-Olsen
The Devil You Know - Mike Carey
A Fatal Grace - Louise Penny

I liked Sandstorm best with The Devil You Know coming in second.

Well, April was a bust for me. Well, early in the month I finished Colin Cotterill's The Coroner's Lunch (on audio which I absolutely loved and I have started on Thirty-Three Teeth, also on audio and am loving that also. Won't finish it by the end of the day though!

I managed to read 4 of the 7 I selected at the beginning of the month.

Book, Line, and Sinker
Night Watch
Rope
