It's no fair, I never find stuff like that when I type horses and lesbians into Google. :(

Are you sure? 'Cause I just googled horses and women, and even with our restricted internet, I still found naked chicks and naked horses (the horror!). I won't post all of them; there were too many. And then there were some really creepy photoshopped ones. o_0

Oh, and I just clicked on the photoshop thing. Uhhh, actually, there is a lot worse stuff than that out there, trust me.

On a more humorous note, if you google "photoshopped porn," you actually get people that take graphic pornographic images and photoshop innocent things over top of them, with hilarious results. You simply HAVE to see them.

Yeah, I'm aware of how bad animal/women photoshopping can get. But for our work computers, that's pretty shocking (though I'll still find the occasional xxx pic in my google image search, go figure).

82Ape
Edited: Oct 4, 2013, 12:10 pm

I'm talking about when we were discussing book covers. I said that when I go to the library I tend to pick books based on the cover alone, and so tend to pick more book by men than by women because men's books have gender-neutral covers, and women's are exceptionally girly and are a turn off for me, even if the content is just as good as what is in men's books. I said it is unfair that publisher's give women's book girly covers because it limits the audience, since it turns away men (potential buyers) from their books. You and Nora disagreed with me, I believe, and called me a sexist for saying such things.

Lots of women's books have girly covers. Only SOME of those girl-covered books are chick lit, and most of it is perfectly good litature. However, I have no way of distinguishing between them when all I have to go on is girly art on the covers, so I read less literature written by women.

It's really hurtful and frustrating when you and Nora discredit what I say just because I'm a man. :(

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. *Hugs*

#80: Your head getting bitten off my Micky and Nora--isn't that a dream of yours? :P And sexism is sexism, no matter whose mouth it's coming from.

#81: Hope you get to feeling better, Micky! :)

#82: What's "girly" though? Neon print? Flowers? Just wondering. Because today I looked at stereotypical genres (romance vs action/thrillers) as I was shelving, and there were equal photos of men and women on the covers and quite a bit of skin coming from both genres.

I agree about judging a book on its cover, though. People say they don't judge, but they do; it's just human behavior. My biggest deciding factors on whether I read a book are the writing style and size (1,000+ pages=heck no from me). And pictures. :)

And yeah, publishers are sexist idiots sometimes.

Wait...you're a man?? And here I thought you were a girl this whole time. Sheesh! :P

Ohwow! The photoshopped animal is awesome! Even if it doesn't make sense, physiologically speaking - it can't close it's mouth without folding in half. :P

I've seen a lot of those before, but I've never seen anyone combine 3 images, and they are usually just mis-matching heads and stuff. Very cool. :)

#80: Your head getting bitten off my Micky and Nora--isn't that a dream of yours? :P

There usually isn't any biting in those dreams though!

#82: What's "girly" though? Neon print? Flowers? Just wondering. Because today I looked at stereotypical genres (romance vs action/thrillers) as I was shelving, and there were equal photos of men and women on the covers and quite a bit of skin coming from both genres.

I don't think there is any clear definition on what is "girly," as it would vary from culture to culture. From a psychological/evolutionary standpoint, I really don't think the genders are more or less attracted to any specific color or anything like that. I do believe we are CONDITIONED to associate certain colors or things with girls or boys. Obviously that conditioning is very bad and stupid, but that doesn't make it any less true.

For example, say a little boy puts on a pink shirt, and when he walks out in front of his mom or dad they go "hahaha, look everyone, Billy is wearing pink. A girl color, hahahahaha!!!" Billy will associate that color with embarrassment, and likely avoid it in the future.

I could be wrong, but I think girls are more positively reinforced to do girl things (they are bought babydolls, barbies, and cookies sets, etc) but aren't discouraged from doing boy things, whereas boys tend to get ridiculed for doing "girl" things, which makes them more likely to be narrowminded sexist morons. And also less likely to buy books with girly covers on them.

As for what's girl and what isn't, let me use a couple books Micky has read recently.

Those are by the same author, but if you set them side-by-side on a shelf, I would never for any reason ever even consider picking up the first one. I would glance at it and say "Uh, no, that's not happening!" But the 2nd one? Well, I kind of like the 2nd one, personally. I would totally pick that up, maybe skim the first page, maybe read the summary on the back. But the "girly" cover of the first will turn me away.

I'm not some macho manly-man type who only reads military fiction or anything. I read Jane Eyre earlier this year, for crying out loud. It's not about the content of the book, it's about cover attraction, and gender-neutral covers (like the 2nd one) are more likely to attract a broader audience in a book store, where as the first one might cause men to immediately pass over it.

91saraslibrary
Oct 6, 2013, 3:18 am

#89: (wipes carpet fuzz off her face) Yay! I made it! And all thanks to Micky's, um, pom poms? o_0

But Furbies and Gremlins are cute!

#90: I think you're right about the creature having three parts. A boston terrier head? Penguin body? And...wild cat's mouth? I really have no idea what they did there. But it is cool! :)

No biting? (sigh) What kind of sex dream has no biting? Oh right. The normal kind. :P

I agree with most of what you said regarding gender roles. It's ok for women to be like men, but not vice versa. That's sad. (Wasn't there a Madonna song about that? Who knows.) There are more men chefs, I've noticed, which is a plus for guys, I guess. I hate to cook, so more power to them.

As for the book covers, if it weren't for the heart on Anna and the French Kiss, I'd almost think it was a tragic romance book and definitely want to read it. For some reason, I don't equate France with happy romances, probably because of the French movies I've watched in the past. And Lola and the Boy Next Door doesn't really scream romance all that much. On quick glance, the star almost looks like the star of David, which makes me think "doomed romance" or "just friends, nothing more." And it doesn't help that the San Francisco bridge is in the back (if it is in S.F.), because that's one city that's not exactly overly-hetero.

FYI: I doubt I will ever read Jane Eyre, so kudos to you for tackling that genderfied classic! :)

Oh, and since this is a book site and all, and I believe you're into The Walking Dead, have you heard of the spoof graphic novel: The Farting Dead? I flipped through it a bit, but I haven't read it yet. Just thought you'd like to hear about it, if you haven't already. :)

The Haunting Hour: Don't Think About It directed by Alex Zamm
Tags: horror, halloween, monsters, dvd, PG
Rating: 4/5
Notes: Surprisingly not very bloody for something by R. L. Stine (in fact, there was more goo than blood), but hey, it's PG, so what do you expect? Still, the monsters are Alien-ish enough to give me the creeps (loved the babies), and it was interesting to see Tobin Bell (the Saw killer) in such a tame role.

I didn't mean to say that there was no biting at all, but there is no biting off of the head! o.o

The chef thing is something I find curious. Even in more sexist times it seemed nobody frowned upon men who cooked, even though many people associated it with wives. There are still lots of negative associations with men as housekeepers though. Stay-at-home husbands do not do well in divorce courts, and stay-at-home boyfriends are strictly forbidden. Imagine the scandal if a lady goes to her group of friends and tell them they met this wonderful unemployed guy. An unemployed guy, they ask? Yeah, he must be a total loser, right? I suspect there will be many a lonely person from my generation, as more women work but refuse to accept non-working men as potential spouses, we'll just end up with a lot of lonely working women and men living in their mom's house until they are 30.

I didn't know there was a paradoy of The Walking Dead, but The Farting Dead isn't so far-fetched as it seems. Decomposition causes gas build up and bloating of the corpse, and it does indeed have to escape somehow. :P

Ok, agreed--no biting Stephen's head off. No matter how juicy it is with ketchup and mustard. :P

Men chefs is a good gender breathrough, though I think everyone should be comfortable enough in the kitchen and not depend on just one person to fix meals, whether it's their mom, wife, whatever. Men housekeepers...that's one I've never thought about. Butlers and whatnot, sure, but I don't think I've ever seen a male housekeeper. However, I haven't hung around enough hotels to find out who they employee to clean my room. Note to self: hang around more seedy hotels, preferably in as little clothes as possible, and stalk the cleaners. ;) I'm not sure about stay-at-home husbands in custody battles (I really haven't read up on it). I usually just hear about the delinquent dads. And unemployed guys...yeah, for some reason, women steer clear of them, I think because they still look at guys as their meal ticket.

Yep, I think the bloating topic did come up in a few pages, along with a lot of loose intestines. Fun stuff! :)

Return to Sleepaway Camp directed by Robert Hiltzik
Tags: horror, camps, series, sleepaway camp, dvd, R
Rating: 2/5
Notes: Just as bad as the first Sleepaway Camp (I haven't seen any of the sequels up to this one). There's zero plot and it's low-budget, which made it feel like it was shot in the 80's/90's, which I guess is a good thing for continuity. The ending didn't have as big of a shock as the first movie either. The killer is pretty obvious (hint: pay attention to makeup effects). I did like that they kept the original cast members at least. Definitely not one I'd recommend, unless you really liked the other movies in this series.

No matter how juicy it is with ketchup and mustard. :P

Oh dear.

Oh! I want to hang out in as little clothes as possible at seedy hotels! Y'know, so we can research this curious sociological quirk, of course. ;)

The thing with women and unemployed men is kind of interesting. I think people forget that this country (and others) has never in it's history been in a place where EVERY SINGLE ADULT had a job. In the past, men worked and women didn't. That means 50 percent of the population worked, and 50 percent of the population stayed at home as housewives. Obviously it was horribly sexist, and equality is a wonderful thing! The issue is that, when women started working, our potential work force DOUBLED, but it's not like the number of jobs doubled too.

So, basically, even if the number of jobs stayed the same and we didn't lose any, every time a woman gets a job it means a man is left unemployed. WHICH IS FINE. The problem is people still think men are supposed to work, and if men and women can't get used to the idea that there just aren't enough jobs for everyone to work and that 50 percent of the population has to marry and stay at home, then we'll continue to have lots of lonely people. Men should be supporting stay-at-home wives, and women should be supporting stay-at-home husbands. Men are okay with supporting housewives, but if working women continue to refuse to date unemployed men, especially since they are getting more and more of the jobs and men are left unemployed, then as I said, there will continue to be lots of lonely people. There just aren't enough working men to go around, I don't think. :(

98: Oh, it's a movie too!? I still need to read the book. :P

Miracle Whip then? I know how much you love the stuff. :)

Awesome! A partner in crime. >:) "No, officer, this isn't my pimp. This is, um, John. What'd you say your last name was again?" Or wait. Do you want to be the tranny prostitute? I so want to be a pimp.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like more of a gender role issue than an employment issue. Believe me, if I quit my job, I know it'd take me years to find another job and/or at least 2-3 jobs to make what I make now, which isn't a lot. Maybe people need to stop having more kids. Or maybe more people need to, um, stop living? That fixes everything, right? ;) Jobs for everyone! I think there are a small minority of wealthy older women, though (*ahem* cougars), who don't mind supporting their boy toys. But again, they're a minority. When I find one, I'll ship her your way, ok? :) But seriously, you make some really good points. It'll take a long time until employment ever works out, though. We'll see how this health care reform works out first.... then maybe they'll actually start doing something about employment? (fingers crossed)

Yep, The Lords of Salem is a movie, too. I honestly don't know which came first, so I can't say which is better. But the movie's pretty trippy without the drug side effects. Thankfully I didn't have any nightmares from it. I watched it right before bed. Creepy, creepy satan creatures.

I can't say the same for P is for Pressure, another animal abuse flick, which I just found offensive. **end of spoiler**}), L is for Libido (I'm ashamed to say I liked this one; sexually explicit snuff stuff). Some are just weird (W is for WTF, Z is for Zetsumetsu), art house-y (O is for Orgasm {beautiful, but horror?})--you name it, there's probably at least one every horror fan will like.

Where would I live: Don't care!
Biggest thing I've won: Not much. An Early Reviewer book?
Biggest pet peeve: Ummm, people in general tend to annoy me, so it's hard to pick a favorite. :P
Website: Librarything (followed by PS3trophies.org)

My biggest pet peeve: Tricky. I'm going to go with soggy cereal.

2. What was the biggest thing you have ever won? -- Probably something, but I don't recall right now. I'll steal Stephen's answer then and say an ER book (like 2 years ago).
3. What is your biggest pet peeve? -- Loud, obnoxious people.
4. What website do you visit the most? -- Going by my browser history, Librarything (duh) and my local jail site?? That's an odd one. I'll go with Google instead.
5. What is your dream job? -- One where I did the least amount of work for the greatest amount of pay. And no human contact involved. Or selling drugs to children.
6. Do you believe in love at first sight? -- Sure. I also believe in hate at first sight, too.
7. What is your favorite candy? -- Vegan gummies.
8. What do you do in your spare time? -- Sleep, exercise, read, watch movies, listen to crappy music, and worship my pets.

High speed internet is pretty great. Is it prohibitively expensive in your neck of the woods, I ask out of curiousity?

146Ape

I can't speak for Sara, but it's very expensive here. My dial-up connection is around $10 per month, cable doesn't exist here (no lines have been ran in the area) and satellite is over $100 per month. The cheapest satellite offering is Dish Network's, which I believe is $40, which still too expensive. Plus, satellite is unreliable in my area since I live in a valley.

What sucks is my NEIGHBOR has fast intenet. The company is called Frontier and they are supposed to be pretty awesome. They offer high speed intenet for a shocking $10-$15 per month, which is AMAZING, but I live 50 yards in the wrong direction. They've been promising us that "we'll be putting lines in on your road this summer" for the past 3 years. It never happens. -.-

For what I make, yes, internet is pretty expensive. For one, my laptop is so slow that I'd have to buy more memory, etc, then probably buy an internet bundle through my phone company (that way it might be cheaper). So my $15/month dial-up internet is doable, for now.

#146: Yeah, I know some people who are unemployed who get free internet access/cell phones, which just seems wrong, imho. But it is what it is.

$50 would be fairly reasonable, but like you mentioned, it's probably just the starting cost. Then it might increase over time. That's what I'm kind of hesitant about, especially if I get locked into a plan where I have to pay twice that or get penalized even more. Hmm... I'll have to do some homework on that. Dial-up seriously sucks.

#150: Yeah, I can understand that. Job-hunting is next to impossible to do on dial-up. (That's why I do job hunting while I'm at work. Bad, I know, but our work computers beat my own.) If I remember correctly, the plans offered here aren't dial-up; it's DSL, etc. It's aimed more at people with children. I guess I don't consider people who live in an urban area where I do (where it's easy to walk to a public library and use their computers) need internet connection as much as, say, groceries or a place to live, etc. That's all I meant by that.

It's not as gory-disturbing as Martyrs (the only other Pascal Laugier movie I've seen, and one I'd recommend as well; it has the same child abduction/abuse themes as this one), but it's definitely twisted. More of a 4.5.

It's definitely a slasher. I'm not sure if you can see the impression of the baby, but that's a pregnant woman's belly you're looking at. And yes, the scissors do come into play in its delivery. XP

It's bad, aware of it's own bad-ness, and thus kind of hysterical. Also, if Jeremy Renner is your type of guy (or Gemma Arterton is your type of girl, Stephen), then you'll probably enjoy it for that.

Sara: Actually, I just typed "Goth chick reading" and that was the only relevant result I got on the first couple pages. I'm trying to imagine the breasts of all my people-crushes (don't roll your eyes, it's strangely difficult) and I'm imagining a multitude of sizes and shapes. Then again, maybe I'm just having fun imagining multitude of breasts. :P

In all honest, speaking as someone who is DEFINITELY a guy, when breasts of ANY size are exposed they are quite possibly the most infinitely fascinating thing on the planet for absolutely to reasonable or rational explanation whatsoever. Women with bigger breasts just are more likely to...ahhh, 'show them off,' and so are probably more like to attract men for that reason. The same is probably true for big penises, but despite everything I just said you'll never convince me women like small penises better than big ones. How ridiculous!

Tags: nonfiction, humor, photography
Rating: 4/5
Notes: I've flipped through this one occassionally at work, but it wasn't until recently that I bought a copy. As always, some are laugh-out-loud funny; some aren't. I don't know about nursery rhymes being the creepiest thing out there, but kiddie beauty pageants definitely get my vote, as well as the other people in the doctor's waiting room (you just know what they have is infinitely worse than what you have--and it's probably contagious to boot!), and any of the pedophile ones (guys who wear boy scout uniforms or go to high school football games when they don't have a kid at that school--super creepy, in my book). Ob/gyn and/or surgical instruments should've been added, imho, but since a guy wrote this book, I'm sure those items never really crossed his mind.

There are definitely a handful I really, really want--like The Interrogation of Ashala Wolf by Ambelin Kwaymullina, Innocence by Dean Koontz, Wanted by J. Tags: fiction, anthology, horror, humor, poetry
Rating: 3/5
Notes: I bought this anthology because of the well-known fantasy/horror contributors and editors (Neil Gaiman, Stephen Jones, Ramsey Campbell, Robert Bloch, Terry Pratchett, James Herbert, etc etc etc), and it was only $2, even though I really can't stand poetry (what was I thinking?). While some poems are humorous and dark (my favorites are "A Slice of Life" by Diana Wynne Jones--I knew there was something in the mystery meat at school--"Something Came Out of the Toilet" by Harry Adam Knight, "Another Cursed House Story" by John M. Ford, plus some others I'm forgetting), a lot of them were either too bland, flowery, and/or confusing (my least favorites: "Aboard the Good Ship 'Revenger'" by Galad Elflandsson, "The Dream of Omar K. Yam" by David Sutton, "Why Private War" by Gene Wolfe, etc). On the plus side, it's a very quick read (just over 100 pages), which might encourage me to flip through it again (who knows; I might like it better a second time around). It's not super gory, but there are a few stories that aren't exactly kid-friendly, especially in the last section, aptly-titled "Adults Only."

#234: I think most cats like doing that--pulling books off the shelves. That's mainly why I try to keep my pets and books separate. As for Mycroft's fear of his scratching post...that's a new one. Maybe smear it with food or catnip or something? Ok, so maybe not food. That'd get messy.

(nods like she knows who Ylvis or The Fox is) Groovy. ;)

Book #153

Boy: Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl
Tags: nonfiction, juvenile, autobiography, series, roald dahl's autobiographies, england, norway, wales, boarding schools
Rating: 5/5
Notes: The pictures and letters were a nice touch, but I honestly couldn't read most of what he'd written.

Book #154

Great Lies to Tell Small Kids by Andy Riley
Tags: fiction, humor, comics, series, lies to tell small kids
Rating: 4/5
Notes: This is more of a re-read since I flipped through it at work years ago when it was first published. Most of it's funny, but I still prefer The Bunny Suicides.

Now how could I pee in the pool if I avoid them like the plague, hm? *Shakes head*

Pee in a balloon and then fling it in the pool? It could happen.

Of course! On a similar note, I wonder if anyone has ever tried to use a balloon as a condom. To Google?

>235 saraslibrary: I've tried putting treats on it. He just knocks them down with his paw. My adorable little neurotic kitteh.

Here's The Fox. Better with sound of course but it does have subtitles. Another of their songs that I think you'd enjoy but that is on the fringes of NSFW is Work It.

#240: I don't doubt it. To Google! Human stupidity should never be underestimated.

#241: Oh, this is quite normal Stephen talk. ;)

#242: But at least he approaches the scratching post. Maybe it fell on him or something and that's why he's afraid of it? Or maybe he thinks it's your previous stuffed pet.

I'll have to check out The Fox links at work on Saturday. Am at home on my hamster-wheel of a computer. (sigh) I'll google them. After I google balloons as condoms, of course. :P

DVD #79

Cold Prey II = Fritt vilt II directed by Mats Stenberg
Tags: horror, foreign, series, cold prey, norway, hospitals, checked out from work, dvd, NR
Rating: 5/5
Notes: It's been too many years since I saw the first Cold Prey to compare the two, but I really liked this sequel. It starts pretty much where the first one leaves off, and includes most of the original cast (in living and dead roles), which always wins points from me (I hate sequels that change the cast and storyline). Definitely recommended if you liked the first Cold Prey, though I expected a little more to be revealed about the killer by the end. Maybe I'll have to wait for that in the third sequel.

>243 saraslibrary: Yeah, I'm not sure where the phobia came from because originally he was pleased as punch to sit up there. At least he still scratches it. *shrug*

I look forward to your reaction. :)

Ah, that explains it. More than likely your scratching post came to life, feeling resentful at being slashed every day, and bucked your cat off it. Makes perfect sense! ;)

Yeah, the "The Fox" is definitely silly but catchy. I liked it! :) (I think I may have heard it, but don't hold me to that.) *snorting over Work It* I can't believe you of all people, Micky, posted that one. The lyrics...you naughty girl. :P For those with slower pc's (*ahem* Stephen), click here for the lyrics. And Micky posted it!! :o

Unfortunately we don't have any Ylvis CDs at work. :(

>246 saraslibrary: That is obviously the source of Mycroft's phobia. I don't know how I didn't think of that. And I'm glad you enjoyed both the Ylvis songs. :)
