So, the folks over at Retreat by Random House created this Reading Bingo card as a 2014 challenge. While I usually try to shy away from reading challenges in general as I find them too constricting on my reading, this one sounds like fun. Anybody want to join in?

Grab the card, and let us know how you do in the comments below. Don't forget to jump over to Retreat by Random House to let them know how you're doing too!
They also have a YA Bingo Challenge going as well, so if you'd rather do that one:

Happy reading, everybody!

I am IN!!! Just my sort of challenge-- scattered and easily manipulated. Looks like fun. I'll be doing both.
Question though-- is there a feature to update our cards? Or are we keeping mental track? Eta: nevermind, I found your link above. Mental it is!
Question though-- is there a feature to update our cards? Or are we keeping mental track? Eta: nevermind, I found your link above. Mental it is!
8tapestry100
There isn't a feature that I can find. I was actually just going to throw mine in Photoshop and put a dot on each of my squares when I filled one. I think if we do like xymon did and just kept track of what we've read, we can figure it out from there. If I can come up with something to make updating easier for everybody, I'll let everybody know. =)
11scaifea
This is so, so tempting! If I get a free moment tomorrow, I may set mine up, but, see, the problem is that I'll want to fill in ALL the squares...
12mamzel
Thanks for sharing this. I will definitely use the YA version at school some how. We go back next Monday.
13tloeffler
I saw this too and printed it out today. Here's my take on it: I'm just going to read as usual and mark off anything that fits, and see how easily I can get a random Bingo! Good fun!
14tapestry100
>9 UnrulySun: - lol - I think your screen might have something to say about that.
>10 leahbird: - Awesome!
>11 scaifea: - Amber, I kind of want to do the same thing. =)
>12 mamzel: - mamzel, that is a GREAT idea. Keep us posted on how it works out with the students!
>13 tloeffler: - Terri, I think that's how I'm going to do it too. My problem with reading challenges is I always feel pressured into making sure I've read all the books necessary to fill slots. This way, I just keep reading and occasionally check this to see if I've read anything that fits the challenge!

15scaifea
Yes, I think Terri has the right idea! I'm definitely going to try to find time today to sit down with my other reading lists and see how many categories I can cover with my up-coming reads.
16markon
13, 14, 15: Me too - I'm posting a hard copy of the card by my desk and am not counting a book until I read it.
18scaifea
Okay, I'm looking through the categories, thinking about what up-coming reads may fit where, and I'm a bit stumped by "Forgotten Classic." How is 'classic' defined here, and what is 'forgotten' all about? Forgotten by whom? The masses, or just me? What are the rest of you thinking to read for this one?
19Merryann
I'm in for both! This sounds like great fun!

>18 scaifea: - I've been pondering the same thing. I just thought I'd go peek at the 1001 list and find something on there that I hadn't heard of before and read that.
21scaifea
Okay, that was sort of what I was thinking, too: a book 50+ years old that I've not heard of, or only heard of in passing...
22mirrani
Well, I'm not in the group, but I was doing this anyway. Our library did a more simple bingo card for December-January and I have already completed two and a half cards. It's a shame there isn't a book bingo group, really... where members would vote on what should go in the squares and people who call bingo can win a prize of some kind.. like... a gift-book from another group member, or something. I've tried doing this with friends before, but my friends aren't nutty readers like I am.
23mirrani
And as far as "forgotten classics" go, I did a quick search and the first thing that came up was:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/steven-moore-/forgotten-classics-you-ne_b_3768429....
Next under that was from npr
http://www.npr.org/2013/08/29/195234263/lost-and-found-5-forgotten-classics-wort...
If those sites give you any idea what the term should cover...

It's all right. :) I only did it to see if what I had in mind as "forgotten" was what other people had in mind. :) Then it occurred to me that it might answer the question, so I came back here and posted. :)

I ran across this on tumblr and decided to print it out and put it on the wall near one of my bookcases (where I have my ROOT/TBR books, in fact). I don't know how they define "forgotten classic" - that's a silly category, it's practically meaningless - but I think I'll put the book I'm about done with there, so I don't have to think about it (The King of Elfland's Daughter).

Bit of a chore actually, but totally worth it! I found the 'x' from Word clipart and saved it as a picture. Then I used the program Paint to paste both the bingo and the 'x' in together on the same panel. Then it's a matter or resizing the x and moving it where you want it. Add another, etc. until you're done, crop and viola. I learned how to put multiple pictures together from Google.
Hope that's understandable :)

Bloody Hell! I just can't say no to a good challenge and this sounds like fun, and it shouldn't be too hard to swap books around to fill it. And it goes without saying - I do both. O.o

Yep, I'm definitely in on this! I think I'm going to try and do both cards, but slot books in as I've read things that fit, and not the other way around (unless, you know, I want to). It will be fun!!!
I'll probably do the Microsoft paint or clipart thing to keep track of it on the card too... but I'll just update like everyone above, for now!

I'm so impressed with how many of you guys have several squares already marked off! I just got my first one, The Single Hound by May Sarton for the First Book by a Favorite Author square.
52laytonwoman3rd
Oh, Lord...I must be out of my mind. But this does sound like fun, and I believe I'll do it as some others have mentioned....just read what I was going to read anyway, and see what fills a slot as I go. I won't do the YA one, because I usually only read one or two of those in a year's time. *sigh*.
EDIT: MY most recent update can be found in >163 laytonwoman3rd: below.

I don't usually do reading challenges beyond the standard 75 books, but this one looks like a lot of fun.
54Roro8
I can't resist either. I am going to go with the read as I had already planned to and see how it goes.
Thanks for the link to this thread Judy.

63mirrani
Laura, we are using photo editing programs. If you save the picture, open it in something even as simple as the basic paint program, you can make an x or circle or something over the square, then resave the card.
64LauraBrook
Thanks, mirrani! I missed out on all of the html/photo editing stuff (it all happened about 5 years after college for me and I wasn't in a job where they used anything resembling anything current), so I'm trying to catch up a little at a time.
65mirrani
Sure thing. You don't even have to use graphics, really, you can just type an X on the box if that's what you want to do, all using the old paint programs. whatever you like.

I updated my cards on #58. I've had several books that could count for multiple squares, but I am purposefully only allowing each book to count as one square. This makes me read a wider variety of books. I am also not allowing the Young Adult books that I read to count on the Adult card, which is a problem, as Walter Farley is my favorite author. Guess I'm going to have to find a favorite author who writes for grown ups. :p

Got my first bingo!

I am using all books (juvenile and YA as well as adult) on this card, rather than limiting myself to just adult books -- which would make for more of a challenge, I suppose, but too late now! If I fill this card (or nearly fill it; I don't read a lot of short stories and I'm still a little hazy as to what constitutes a "forgotten classic"), I'll move on to the YA card, and I probably will stick to YA (or juvenile and YA) for it.
In case you can't read the tiny title images, here's what I have so far:
More than 500 pages: The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker
Forgotten Classic:
Book that became a movie:
Published this year: The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson

Congrats, foggidawn! Great idea to use the books as the stamps. Why didn't I think of that? :p
80shootingstarr7
What an awesome challenge idea! I'm going to participate, too, at least for the regular books chart (though if I pick up some YA titles at any point this year, I'll revisit the idea of including those as well). I'm also making it a rule that I can only use each author once. So even though I've already read two Deanna Raybourns and two Susanna Kearsley's this year, I can only count them once.

It works for me, Kristelh. I do my number challenges that way. At least one other has used "One" as their number, so I'm sure it's fine with others?

Good start, especially with only counting books you really liked.
Personally, I'm just curious to see how many of the squares I'll manage to cover in a normal year's reading.

91PawsforThought
I'm going to play along a bit too. It won't be the primary focus of my reading this year but more of a fun side thing. I think I might cheat a bit and not bother with the YA part of the YA bingo card (meaning: I'll count books that aren't YA). We'll see.
I'll try and get my bingo card up later.

>90 ursula: I'm fairly certain I would probably end up covering the whole card in any given year, considering how diverse my reading tends to be. With the restriction I've set up for myself, I'll still manage to get at least a couple of Bingos I'm sure - I'm already pretty close, since I've filled the 'short fiction' spot.
>91 PawsforThought: I like that idea of doing the YA card but with non-YA books. I read YA, but not enough of it to make it worth doing that card, which is why I didn't consider it before, but now you have me thinking...

93PawsforThought
91. Yeah, that's the same reason I do it. I do like reading YA but the amount of YA books I read just wouldn't be enough to play bingo. But I liked the categories on the card too much to give them up.
94ursula
>92 Smiler69: My reading is pretty diverse, too, but some of them would probably be sticking points. Anything in a series is pretty unlikely, first book by a favorite author would be pure chance (especially since I don't have many favorites and/or read many books by the same author), non-human characters is not really up my alley.

Other books I have read that I can suggest for the "Under 30" square are:
Bonjour Tristesse - written by Francoise Sagan when she was only 18.
A Beautiful Blue Death- first book in the Charles Lennox detective series set in Victorian England. Not sure when this was written but it was first published in 2007 when Charles Finch was only 27.

OK - I've managed to avoid looking directly at this for two months now but I think I'm going to cave in and join. I'm going to keep it sort of 'unofficial' in that I'm not going to seek out any particular books but just read what I'm reading anyway and see if it fits anywhere when I'm done and see what happens.
I need to get my cards set up and see where what I've read so far fits. Sounds like a good project for this weekend. I'll be back . . .

What do you think the YA card means by "a book with music"?
109PawsforThought
108. Good question. I think I'd interpret it relatively freely. A book with song quotes (or indeed notation, though I suspect that's rather rare) or where music is a very big part of the story, i.e. not just "and she put her headphones on..." but rather something like a musician being the main character and their work being the focus of the story or like the Edith Piaf bits in Inception.

Updated message #58.
>108 norabelle414: If you read SCI-Fi stuff, you can pick up one of the Pern books. They took the Harper songs and made them into a music CD. That'd count. Of course there are some who think some of the Pern books aren't really Young Adult material and more for older teens, but the Harper Hall trillogy would do for a YA read, in my opinion. ;)

The Harper Hall trilogy is definitely YA. Other YA books with music, to a greater or lesser degree:
Unicorn Sonata by Peter S. Beagle (the one I used for that square)
Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane
Books of Faerie duology by Maggie Stiefvater
The Last Days by Scott Westerfeld
Fairest by Gail Carson Levine (I don't particularly like this book, but it is definitely musical)
Cart and Cwidder by Diana Wynne Jones
Fire by Kristin Cashore
Bloodhound and Magic Steps by Tamora Pierce

Bingo!
I just completed another line with the addition of In Chancery by John Galsworthy to the "Second Book in a Series" category (bottom last row). I keep reshuffling things around a bit once in a while, which I hope isn't cheating, but then again I am making things a bit more challenging by only counting books I've rated 4 stars and up...
No bingo on the "YA" card yet, even though I'm not necessarily sticking to YA titles to fill it up, but I'm on the verge... especially as A Wizard of Earthsea (currently listening to and which I'll finish today or tomorrow) is set in another world.

In the meantime congrats to all who are making progress and Bingos!!

I wasn't going to post again until I have a bingo (my reading this year is super slow, I will probably not get anywhere near my goal, sigh) but this is getting ridiculous. I have books on nearly every space on the YA bingo card that it's possible to be on without getting a bingo! Seriously, there are three more spots that won't get me any bingos, and then every other space will get me a double bingo.
Clearly I should read YA books set in the future, with a break up, and that I heard about online next so I can make this happen.
(The first and third will be easy enough, but I don't usually think of "with a break up" as a major plot point, so I dunno. Hm.)

Update to message #58. My cards are coming along. I'm surprised as much reading as I've done I still haven't filled a card yet. Sadly I've hit a point where I'm still not branching out enough, even though I'm doing a random dewey decimal challenge, where I just randomly grab a call number off the shelf. :p

Soooo close:

A book with a female heroine: The Chapel Wars by Lindsey Leavitt
A book set in a high school: Ask Again Later by Liz Czukas
The last book in a trilogy: The Shadow Throne by Jennifer Nielsen
A book with a color in the title: A Corner of White by Jaclyn Moriarty

A book set in the future: Dangerous by Shannon Hale
A book with a breakup: The Selection by Kiera Cass

A book set in Paris: Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell
A book set in the past: School of Charm by Lisa Ann Scott
A book with magic: A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd
A book set in the summer: Roomies by Sara Zarr and Tara Altebrando
A book with a dragon: Handbook for Dragon Slayers by Merrie Haskell
A book that made you cry: ?????
A graphic novel: Bluffton by Matt Phelan
A book based on a myth: Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge
A "classic" YA book: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling
A book with a lion, a witch, or a wardrobe: House of Ivy and Sorrow by Natalie Whipple
A book with an incredible fight scene: The Mark of the Dragonfly by Jaleigh Johnson
A book you heard about online: The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson
A book set in another world: Wren's War by Sherwood Smith
A book with an epic love story: Cress by Marissa Meyer
A book with music: The Lucy Variations by Sara Zarr
All of these are either young adult or juvenile fiction. I'll admit that some may be a stretch (not sure if the love story in Cress is "epic" -- what does that even mean? And I consider the Harry Potter series "classics," but I'm not sure everyone would agree. And I may have heard about The Rithmatist from my brother before hearing about it online, but hearing about it online was definitely what influenced me to actually read it.) Also, I did some shuffling around of titles, including moving one over from my adult bingo card, to fill this many slots. (My adult card still has four blank spaces -- forgotten classic, short stories, based on a true story, and from the bottom of my TBR pile -- which I'm finding difficult to fill.)
Now I just need a tear-jerker . . . fortunately, June is my month to reread Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. That ought to do it.

>142 foggidawn: Don't forget, you have the other diagonal too :-)
I wish some of the categories were better defined. How is a classic forgotten? If you forgot it, how did you read it? And what is the bottom of a TBR pile? Mine is more like a TBR infinite loop.

144foggidawn
>143 norabelle414: Sure enough. I'll fix that when I find a tear-jerker to fill that last slot. :-) I agree about the categories. I have a whole bookcase full of TBR books, not necessarily in any kind of order, though the ones near the top tend to be the older ones. So is a book from the top of my bookcase actually a book from the bottom of my TBR pile? And the "forgotten classic" category is just silly. I thought that a classic, by definition, was a book that was not forgotten.
145PawsforThought
>142 foggidawn: Wow! Well done you! And we're not even halfway through the year!
146lkernagh
>142 foggidawn: - Good job on your Bingo reading!
147laytonwoman3rd
I used "forgotten by me" as my definition for the Forgotten Classic category. And I just filled it by reading The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler. I had forgotten that I had never read that one back in my youth! As for "bottom of the TBR pile", that was easy----any book I'd had around for more than a couple years without reading fit that slot. The one that will give me the most trouble, I think, is a book that "scares" me. There have been books that scared me in the past, but I may have outgrown that response. We shall see.
148lauralkeet
>147 laytonwoman3rd: Linda, from the very beginning my interpretation of "scared" was more about the book intimidating me (due to size, writing, whatever). Not that it was a scary story. If that helps.
149laytonwoman3rd
>148 lauralkeet: iiiiiinteresting. I hadn't thought of that! I HAD thought of something by a person whose thought processes scare me (ultra-conservatives, perhaps) or one on the subject of climate change or terrorism---those things scare me...
150Morphidae

For the moment, I'm using just YA books on the YA card. But later in the year if I'm not filling it up, I reserve the right to go back and do so with adult books. Update: Looks like at the end of June, I'll need to start working on adding adult books to the YA card. I simple don't read enough YA.

BINGO!

Time for a mid-year update . . .

Goodness, I mostly forgot I was doing this.
Only two more squares to fill. Books don't usually scare me, and I don't follow or read from best-seller lists, so we'll see what I can do about those last two.
