I am looking for a non-fiction history book on the background to and the actual time of the Boer War in South Africa. Can anyone suggest any good titles?

I haven't read a book specifically on Boer War, but my my long list of interesting books contains, The Boer War by Thomas Pakenham. I believe this work was cited by E. J. Hobsbawm in his Age of Empire. This is also by far the most popular book on the war in the OCLC database.

Pakenham's book is worth reading. But so is the Herman Charles Bosman book of Boer war stories if you want to soak up real atmosphere. Stuart Cloete's "the Soldier's Peaches" is also an amazing book on the subject.
