I read 129 books this year. I broke them down into these categories and will list my top ones in each category

1001 Books
I read 37 books from the list this year
Top 5
Broken April Ismail Kadare
That They May Face the Rising Sun John McGahern
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Doestoevsky
Remembering Babylon by David Malouf

Fantasy/Science Fiction I really tried to read off the NPR 100 best list this year, I read 17 in all, more if I take off the children/YA list.
Ringworld by Larry Niven
Jonathon Strange & Mr Norrell Susanna Clarke
The Martian by Andy Weir
A Canticle for Liebowitz Walter M. Miller Jr.
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis

NonFiction--This year I really focused on nonfiction because of the Dewey and also reading off the PBT top 100 NF.
I read 21
Most Dangerous: The secret history of Vietnam Steve Sheinkin
Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand
On Writing by Stephen King
Quiet: the power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain
How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster

Children and Young Adult
I read 14 with a wide range of age
My favorites were
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K.Rowling
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson

I read a lot of short stories this year, 7 in all
The best was a tie between
Redeployment by Phil Klay or
Almost Famous Women by Megan Mayhew

Published in 2016, I started reading books published this year because of an interest in the Tournament of Books
I read 10 books published this year
I didn't give any 5 stars but the best ones from what I read were
The Lost Time Accidents by John Wray
The Association of Small Bombs by Karan Mahajan
The Regional office is Under Attack by Manuel Gonzales
I am reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi and it is superior to all of these.

And then the ones that don't really fit--The Others. A comglomeration of bookclub books, challenges, tags, etc and also trying to read last year ToB and PBT best of lists, etc.
I read 22
Still Alice Lisa Genova
Maus II Art Spiegelman
The Good Lord Bird James McBride
The Waste Land T S Eliot
The Turner House by Angela Flournoy
