Thought I'd better add this in, in case there's another question someone has and I haven't thought of a "category" to place that in! :-)

Jan 17, 2016, 1:24 pm

Hi, all -

LibraryCin asked me to re-post here some links and group info that I gave in another thread.

So here you go (with some editing for clarification)!

I hope you'll continue to ask questions. Welcome to LibraryThing, or the Talk about LibraryThing groups are good places, not to mention Frequently Asked Questions! I see that LibraryCin has set up a group specifically for Shelfari refugees. There are also a variety of groups that address specific issues, such as combining, Common Knowledge, etc.

Not sure if this is covered somewhere or not and I totally admit to being too lazy to look at the moment (sorry!) but how do I hyperlink within posts so that books pages or discussion threads can be linked?

Ignore this Cindy. I found the thread where you explain this :-)

Eek! I recently posted my January TBR on the SF group. Afterwards I noticed that I was the only one out of 75 posts whose title wasnt in that neat blue colour, and felt like an idiot. It looks so nice How can I do that?I experimented with bolding, but didnt dare press save in case I made a mes of it. The words were in black anyway!
And how do I go back and amend any post errors afterwards,or is it too late?
Sorryfor asking dumb questions, but am still finding my feet.

Edited: Jan 19, 2016, 2:23 pm

>6 dustydigger: Yes, you can edit your post. Once you have opened it to edit, look to the right. (or now at the new message box). That shows how to create 'touchstones'. Do check that the right book has come up. If not, click on others and then on the green plus of the right work.

Jan 19, 2016, 2:49 pm

>6 dustydigger: I'm not sure what you mean regarding the title not being in blue. If you can point me to your post, I'll be happy to take a look and help you get it looking the way you want to!

Jan 19, 2016, 2:54 pm

>8 lorannen:

I think >7 MarthaJeanne: is correct, that he's referring to touchstones. When you use touchstones, the book title/author appears in blue.

Jan 19, 2016, 3:21 pm

>9 lilithcat: Ah, I think you're probably right. I wasn't reading carefully enough and I thought they were referring to the title of the post itself.

Here are a couple posts for doing "fancy" (read as HTML-ish) things in LT (mostly in the Talk threads):

Jan 19, 2016, 3:45 pm

>11 lesmel: Note that second topic is really old and there are easier ways now of doing some things.

Jan 19, 2016, 5:45 pm

And don't forget to check the touchstone list in the dialog box while you're composing your post. It doesn't always find the right book on the first try!

Jan 19, 2016, 6:51 pm

What are the best groups on this site to discuss what you are reading in general (not genre specific)?

Jan 19, 2016, 9:13 pm

>14 Melissa_J: I'm in a couple of Canadian groups. That might interest you...

This is the main "generic" Canadian one (at least that I've found):

There is also one specific to Canada Reads and a Canadian challenge group, as well.

There is one genre-specific one I'm active in and one challenge-focused group.

If anyone is interested in the challenge group, this is a fun one. Lots of challenges going on there:

I'll leave off the genre one at the moment, since everyone likes different genres.

I'm sure there are lots of other general groups for discussion, as well. I'll let others chime in with recommendations, as well.

Jan 19, 2016, 9:22 pm

>15 LibraryCin: Thanks, Cindy! I've joined the Canada group (although I don't read a lot of Canadian books - does that make me a bad Canadian??) and the Challenge group, which looks like it could be fun.

Jan 20, 2016, 12:38 am

I will get my lifetime membership now that I have imported all my Shelfari Books over to LibaryThing?

Jan 20, 2016, 2:58 am

>17 Lindz2012: You should ask in one of the standing groups about that, that's something only staff can help with.

>14 Melissa_J: My favorite non-challenge group is Club Read, where everyone keeps a thread chronicling their reading over the year, and chatting with everyone else about what they are reading. Club Read and the TBR Challenge (where you choose 12 primary & 12 alternate titles from off your shelves to read by the end of the year) are my LT "hangouts," haha.

Edited: Jan 20, 2016, 3:45 am

>14 Melissa_J: A lot depends on how much you read. The category challenges (currently are good if you read a lot. It really does help to see what sorts of books you are reading a lot of, and what you are neglecting. I don't think many of us are planning to fill 16 categories of 16 this year, though, as the earlier tradition would have been. (8 and 9 were easier.) The other big challenge group is and both of these groups have various subchallenges and group reads that can be interesting.

If reading one or two books a week sounds like a lot, look at the groups that are most active and see if any suit you.

Jan 20, 2016, 7:09 am

You Shelfarians really have yourselves together! An advance scout (LibraryCin) and then setting up a base camp here. Quite different from the GoodReads refugees a couple of years ago, with a horde of stumbling, lost and bedraggled GRs hauling their collections over by cart and luck.

Welcome to LibraryThing! I hope you make it your home. There is quite a deep set of Groups covering a lot of interests beyond books. Browsing under the Groups tab is informative, but you can also do a general search, for example 'needlework' and click on Groups in the left column, you'll find 8 related groups, 7 of them dormant, but the 8th is Needlearts. Dormant groups can be re-activated just by posting a message. You can also create groups to fit your own interests.

Once you are settled enough, check out other members' profiles. If you find someone who seems simpatico, go visit the groups they belong to. Once you've made some connections thataway, the 'Groups and posts' setting in Talk will be more meaningful.

Edited: Jan 20, 2016, 1:51 pm

I joined a group called ROOTS 2016,where you make yourself a challenge to read old books off your TBR,instead of new shiny stuff. Right up my street, because I think I have about 100 pre 2000 books I want to get through this year. lol
Once again I am having technical trouble. The group use ''tickers'' to chart their progress. I went to the site, chose my ticker, but havent a clue how to make it appear on this site!I copied the ticker, but dont know how or where to paste Ah well,I'll get there eventually,Im sure someone in that group will help out.
Two days ago it was learning about Touchstones to make my titles appear a pretty blue,a nice feature.Who said you couldnt teach an old (68 end of the month!) new tricks?

Jan 20, 2016, 2:13 pm

>21 dustydigger: If you're using Ticker Factory, copy the HTML code they provide and paste it into a message.

>17 Lindz2012: Once your import is complete, your account should be automatically upgraded. You can check your membership status over on your account settings: under "Account type" it should say "lifetime".

>19 MarthaJeanne: Thanks for the suggestions! I've joined the Category Challenge and will head on over in a minute to set up my challenge tracking thread.

>20 2wonderY: Thank you for the welcome. I think I'm going to enjoy my time here.

Please accept my unofficial welcome, ex-Shelfarians. I hope you're finding your LT legs and getting to know the vast community here.

In fact, I hope you'll join us at the Group, "All Writers Considered," where we like to recognize that there are people behind all those books we love, and we have plenty to say about favorite authors, new-to-me ditto, and maybe authors we wish weren't. if you don't see a topic about your favorite author, please start one.

Everyone's friendly on LT, and most are helpful. So once again, pull up your favorite reading chair and join in the discussions. We'd like to hear from you!

Jan 22, 2016, 5:08 am

My import was disastrous, and I was advised to remove my books entirely and try again.Hopelessly wandering about trying to find the way to do it. I would appreciate someone telling me in words of one syllable just how to remove them. I had imported once and it was a mess, loads of one word authors etc,and duplicates. I imported again, but all that did was create two overlapping files, and that compounded the problem.I am finding locating things a problem till I get used to the site

Edited: Jan 22, 2016, 5:28 am

Ah,the lightning bolt appeared once I was in the right mode,so I will try to do it myself lol. Sharp learning curve here!

Yay! I re-imported,and now I have the right number of books.Still a huge number of blank covers but maybe that will be sorted soon,or I will just have to get editing! Only a mere 10 duplicate books, unlike earlier with nearly 400!
And how quickly you did it! I have been waiting 10 days for my Goodreads import.Done by they themselves on shelfari, and only two books arrived. Now that I have my correct books on LT,and backed up on Leafmarks,I get the feeling GR will soon be seeing the back of me.The ''merger'' has been a disgrace on every front

Jan 22, 2016, 8:06 am

Only about a third of my books came over and none with a cover.

Is there undo instructions?

Jan 22, 2016, 9:56 am

>30 nospi: If you want to delete all of your books and try again:

Go to Your Books.
Click the Lightning Bolt button.
Click Select All Books (you might want to do All on Page if you have a lot of titles).
Click the Delete Books tab.
Click the Delete Selected Books button. ** This cannot by undone. **

>29 dustydigger: & >30 nospi: As for covers, if you look at Your Books, make sure you can see the ISBN in one of the views. You should notice that the titles without covers are the titles without ISBNs. You can see your cover stats here: (Or click Home > Stats/Memes >Book Covers)

Jan 22, 2016, 1:46 pm

>29 dustydigger: I'm glad we finally got your imports squared away! Ammar is still working tirelessly to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Looking at your library now, the blank covers are appearing largely on books that either have no author information, or incorrect author information listed, like this one, and this one. These can be easily fixed, by correcting the author information. That should automatically combine them with the correct work page, which should then get you covers.

I'm not sure how much poking around on LT you've done yet, but let me know if you have any questions about how work pages, um... work, for lack of a better term.

Jan 22, 2016, 10:51 pm

>29 dustydigger: Glad things seem to be working out for you, dusty!

Jan 31, 2016, 11:19 pm

I have a question. I'm still new to LibraryThing's system, so maybe I'm doing it wrong. I just finished a book, so I moved it from Currently reading to My Library. However it doesn't show up on My Library or on Currently Reading, but when I try to readd it, it says it's a duplicate entry. Does it take time for it to be added to my library? I'm used to shelfari adding it right when I change it from reading to read.

Jan 31, 2016, 11:36 pm

>34 Navarre1963: That seems odd. I was going to look at your shelf, but you didn't mention what book it was.

I know that you can have multiple collections selected at the same time, but I'm not sure if you can deselect them all? Or what would happen if you deselected all the options by accident.

If you click on the book title and and look at the book page, are you able to click on Collections to see if it accidentally got added somewhere else? Or deselected from everything? Am I making sense!? :-)

Feb 1, 2016, 3:25 am

It would help a lot to know which book.

Things usually show up in a new collection immediately.

When you say you moved it, how did you do that?

Feb 1, 2016, 5:03 am

It was The Nemesis of Evil by Lin Carter

Edited: Feb 1, 2016, 5:34 am

It is certainly now in 'Your Library'. It's possible that the servers got out of sync for a short time. It does happen, and it's hard when you don't have a feel yet for how things normally work.

BTW Reentering (or deleting and reentering) is usually the worst thing you can do. It just confuses the servers even more. It's frustrating when these things happen, but they usually clear up fairly quickly if you stop trying to fix them.

In general, LT is quite reliable. Now and then the servers do get out of sync, but not for long. Sometimes it goes down, but not very often, and not for long. And even when people have lost data by deleting something by mistake, Tim & co have usually been able to get it back.

>35 LibraryCin: You are not supposed to remove a book from all collections. Actually, you are not supposed to be able to do it. I think the only place it will give you a warning message is on the edit book page; it says it will add it to 'Your library'. Most places it just won't let you remove that last collection. Someone recently caused problems by deleting a collection, but a few books were only in that collection.
My guess is that the systems people will try to plug that hole.

Feb 1, 2016, 8:29 pm

>38 MarthaJeanne: Thanks! I wasn't sure.

Feb 1, 2016, 10:15 pm

Yes I tried calling it up from Your Library, and I see it's there. It's hard getting used to a new system after I'd gotten used to Shelfari for so many years.

Edited: Feb 1, 2016, 11:16 pm

One really nice feature here on LibraryThing is that you can mark a book as 'Currently reading' at the same time as 'Read'. One caveat; just like on Shelfari, you have to remember to toggle each of them on/off!

I tend to add every book I have or borrow to 'My Library' and then also mark them 'To read', 'Currently reading' or 'Read'. That way all three of the latter categories add up to the total amount of books in 'My Library'. I have also added my own categories (called 'Collections') for things like 'Reviewed' and for a few WWE challenge reads I have done/am doing, ('2015 Pick & Mix', '2016 Pick & Mix', etc).

You can modify your categories/collections in the 'Collections' drop-down found on the 'Your Books' tab on the menu bar, (a.k.a. the chocolate bar ;).

Feb 2, 2016, 8:03 pm

>41 ScoLgo: LOL! The "chocolate bar"!? I like it!

Feb 2, 2016, 8:36 pm

Heh. I cannot take credit for the term. I picked it up reading other forum posts. But yeah, it sure fits nicely!

May 8, 2016, 3:23 pm

Is there a way for me to put my list of books read in order by the date I read them?

Edited: May 8, 2016, 3:58 pm

Yes, sort by that column. If you are using that column in your view, you can just click on the column (or again for the reverse sort.) In any view you can click on the up and down arrow icon to get a pop-up for choosing and sortable field. If you don't see the pop-up, scroll down the page.

BTW, even with clicking on columns you can chose a primary and secondary sort. The previous primary sort moves to secondary when a new sort is chosen, so first click on the secondary, and then on the primary.

Edited: May 8, 2016, 10:07 pm

Hmmm, ok so i ned to find a style that includes that date before i can sort that way. Ill have to play around to see what i like and which styles offer that as a column. Thank you.

eta just reread your note... so i can add it as an additional column for the style i already have. Thats better. Thanks again!

May 8, 2016, 10:09 pm

And reread a third time... i cant just add the extra column? I need to find a style that includes it as an option?

May 8, 2016, 10:11 pm

Im not seeing it as an option in any of the styles. I see entry date, but not date read.

Edited: May 8, 2016, 10:14 pm

Lol! Ok i finally found it. I need to go into Settings to customize the styles, to add date read. I think ive got it now!

Eta yay, success! Thank you.

May 29, 2016, 9:20 pm

Does anyone know how to add a book that I can't find in the LT database?
Thanks so much!

May 30, 2016, 1:59 am

The way to enter a book is to go to the add book page. Do NOT search first on LT.

You can search (best is by ISBN) in a variety of sources.

If none of the sources has the book you can enter manually. Go to the bottom of the left hand column for the link. The page will look like the edit book page, but is empty.

May 30, 2016, 3:58 pm

Thank you! I did do an isbn search of the LT database and nothing. It's a very small local press, so I wasn't surprised not to see it. I will try all the other source options using isbn before continuing on to actually add it.

May 30, 2016, 4:29 pm

Finding it on LT doesn't help in adding it. You cannot use LT as a source. I know there is that button that says 'Add to your books', but that just fills in the title for you on the add books page. And since ISBN searches tend to be more accurate, it's just a waste of time.

May 30, 2016, 5:11 pm

Yeah, everything that MJ has said. It does not matter at all if you search LT for something, it's completely unrelated.

May 30, 2016, 8:25 pm

I just searched a bunch of different sources, and I'm not surprised to not see it anywhere.

I have added it in myself - thank you for instructions! I just need to upload a cover.

May 31, 2016, 9:21 am

>52 LibraryCin: & >55 LibraryCin: You could so what I do sometimes, I search in WorldCat,org to see if a library holds it. Then I look to see if the library is a source in LT. If so, I add from that library source. That way, the book details do get added to Overcat...and someone else won't suffer the hunt-hunt-hunt-add dance.

May 31, 2016, 3:54 pm

>56 lesmel: Thanks. I tried that, as well, but no dice.

Edited: Jun 18, 2016, 6:17 pm

Question- When I add my books that I am currently reading they automatically go to books read. How do I get them to go into books currently reading and then how do I move them to books read?

I put my books in by going to add books at the top of the page.

Edited: Jun 18, 2016, 6:34 pm

>58 JulieLill: Under 'Add books', in the 'Add to collections' section, click the 'Show all' button. Then select/de-select the ones you want to assign to the book you are adding.

Note that you need to make these selections (and add tags) before you select the book you are adding to your library from the search results on the right side of the page. Once you finish reading the book, simply change the collection it belongs to from 'Currently reading' to 'Read'.

Jun 18, 2016, 7:22 pm

>59 ScoLgo: Note that you need to make these selections (and add tags) before you select the book you are adding to your library from the search results on the right side of the page.

Even more so, you need to make the selection of collections and add tags before you click the Search button, not just before you select the book on the side. If you forget (as I do often), after you've added the book you can click the Quick Edit button and adjust your collections and tags there, without having to open up the Edit Book page.

Jun 23, 2016, 3:08 pm

Are there any other obsessives here. I leave my LTs page open at "Talk", so I can see if any of my groups are active. At the side there is "Book Discussions", how can I get rid of the numbered box next to "All Discussions"? It mocks me because I deleted everything in that section, but still it looks like I have 7 items I have failed to deal with. Laugh all you's driving me nuts!

Jun 23, 2016, 3:28 pm

You can't get rid of it. It's broken, been broken for a long time.

Jun 23, 2016, 4:01 pm

Yep I don't even notice it anymore haha.

Edited: Jun 23, 2016, 4:15 pm

>62 .cris:

Interesting. I had no idea what you all were talking about. Seven unread items? Huh?

I hardly ever click on 'Talk'. I find having a 'Talk' section on my home page to be more convenient - at least for the (probably backwards) way I tend to do things...

By choosing the Groups and posts header, the most recent posts to my groups automagically rise to the top.

There are probably some great benefits to going directly to the Talk page that I am missing out on. Maybe the LT Experts can chime in and give a few hints...?

Jun 23, 2016, 5:11 pm

The main thing you'd be missing is just that it only shows a few posts. Often when I come on there's 1/2-2/3 of a page of new posts, which would far overflow the little widget thing. Otherwise not much.

Jun 23, 2016, 5:21 pm

>67 ScoLgo: I removed most of the options from my home page. I love the way you can customise virtually everything here. I don't like clutter in my life!

Edited: Jun 23, 2016, 5:27 pm

>67 ScoLgo: My LT habits date back to before the home page was created so I almost never go there. There may be big advantages to using the home page, but I'd have to change my way of doing things.

Jun 23, 2016, 8:17 pm

I do like ScoLgo does, the active group goes to the top.
I keep my talk page on the starred in your world so I have quick access to this place.

Jun 23, 2016, 8:49 pm

>71 Foghorn-Leghorn: It got cut off in that screen-shot I did but... in the 'Your Notepad' section, I put a direct link to that same thread. I also use that notepad area as a place to store my lengthier book reviews as I mull over my thoughts and massage them into shape.

Lots of cool ways to do things here at LT!

Edited: Jun 23, 2016, 10:50 pm

I occasionally scroll down to look at the "Talk" section on my homepage, but for some reason, it always seems to show me old threads. I have no idea why or how to change it.

So... I always go to the "Talk" tab/page.

I also love how customizable things are and that there are many different ways to do things.

ETA: So, I guess I just never looked close enough and/or just didn't take the (all of about 10 seconds) time to figure it out! No that difficult to sort by "unread" and there are the new threads/posts! Oh, well. I'm used to the Talk tab now... I doubt I'll change that.

Jun 23, 2016, 10:49 pm

>67 ScoLgo: I work the same way you do. In addition, I have my Groups and Posts set to starred item sort so I can see current posts more easily in the topics I'm most interested in

Jun 24, 2016, 2:25 am

>70 MarthaJeanne: Same here, I almost never use it. Mainly I go there maybe once a month or so because there's a particular link I sometimes need that I keep saved in my "notepad." My LT time is pretty much spent in the Talk tab aside of doing catalog-related things.

Jun 24, 2016, 1:48 pm

>72 ScoLgo: I have my own private group with me as creator and sole member where I do all my experimentation no matter what it is. I just add threads for different topics I am addressing.

Jun 24, 2016, 2:08 pm

Jun 24, 2016, 11:31 pm

Ok, there seems to be a way bigger conversation going on there...

Jun 25, 2016, 2:31 am

Yes, but he explicitly stated more than once that groups are to be used as groups, not as pasteboards. In that same vein I don't think inviting someone else to be a wallflower would change a group made not to be a group.

Jun 25, 2016, 9:51 am

It says "Do not create "pointless," "meaningless" or "random" groups or topics. We give all groups the benefit of the doubt, but the creation of multiple, duplicative and contentless groups is against these terms."
I do not consider my 'group' to be pointless, meaningless or random. It definitely has content.

Edited: Jun 25, 2016, 10:47 am

Tim states: "LibraryThing groups are intended to be things other people might join, where conversation might take place, group catalogs might be shared, or other group features used. Members are not free to create groups solely to serve as a venue for a series of personal posts—to take up space in the "new groups" list, under all the group tags and in searches forever, with far more prominence than a Talk post just because you can. A group can be for you and others to protest, but pressing the "create group" button requires you to intend to create and then foster a real group."
"the core principle is a core principle of the site--no misuse of site features (TOS: "Do not subvert or misuse site features."). Leaving this group aside, if someone were to make a group for the sole purpose of having a place to stick their words, it wouldn't be a group and would be deleted. Groups, like all site features, are more than just a bunch of text fields that get stored in a database and throw up on the screen. They are intended to be used in certain ways, relating to the name and features of the feature, and not others. Using a group as a personal argument pin-board is no different from using the work system to catalog authors on a Goodreads hit-list, dumping databases of books you don't have any connection to into the book system, using the LibraryThing cover system to go after the LDS for being anti-LGBT (the cat shitting-on-book-of-Mormon covers), or using the user system to create dozens of alter egos who have weird conversations with each other but don't engage in any sock-puppetry per se. All of those have happened, and none of them fell under any other principle than misuse of features."

Hi Gayle!

I don't think Dosha is here. If she is, I haven't seen her. Auntie is here once in while - not very active here.

I think Dosha tried LT and found it too confusing. I think she's mostly at GR now. She may still have an account, but I'm not sure she's using it.

Melissa is also here and yes, she is avidreader. She is at both sites, but more active in groups at GR, I believe. I'm sure she's around here, too, though. She likes the cataloguing here.

My favorite method of adding a book is by searching Amazon and getting either ASIN or ISBN. If not I head to

Amazon data for recent books is usually OK, but older books are just in there from their marketplace partners, and those can be very bad. I would start with Overcat, not with Amazon.

I think both Dosha and Auntie (now Kimberly) are pretty much exclusively on Goodreads now.

Someone was asking about this site on Good Reads. Is it still free to join? Thanks!
