Dirk, aiong with his best friend, Al Giordano, are ex-navy working for NUMA primarily recovering shipwrecks/treasures (ie The Titanic). Like with the crew of the Oregon, there's always a side story involving local people, the environment, or an evil meglomaniac. Unlike the Oregon, in almost all of the early Dirk Pitt books, there's a new woman and a classic car involved. Additionally, Dirk and Al are the primary characters with occasional use of technicians and the Admiral at NUMA
The Dirk Pitt books are fun, easy reads (if somewhat predictable).

I haven't read a Dirk Pitt book in at least twenty years.

Dirk Pitt books are really good. Brenda summed him up very nicely. He's not looking for a new woman anymore since he got married a few books ago. She's a U.S. Senator. He's also now the head of NUMA so his role is less than it was. his children by one of his women that he was serious about until she was killed...twins, a boy and a girl do much of the treasure and shipwreck hunting now. The office that NUMA works from is extremely high tech...even has holograms. Lots of classic cars in those books. Cussler collects classics. Clive Cusslers son, Dirk...the character was named for him... has written the last 7 books with him. There are 24 in the series currently. The Odessa Sea comes out in November. I hated the first book and almost stopped reading the series. He made the Dirk Pitt character out to be an opinionated, egoistical, jerk. Glad I continued because the next 22 were great and the character had developed a winning personality. Haven't read, of course #23 but it's on hold at the library.

>5 Carol420: I did a "summer of Dirk Pitt" and read his first 15 books straight through, back to back.
Carol's correct that the first couple were a bit rough but they definitely got better as you went along. Where I stopped was just as he was starting to settle down but before marriage and finding out about the children. No actual reason, just burn out but fully intend to get back to him.

>6 bhabeck: I did this marathon read with J.D. Robb's "In Death" books. I have #42 now. I've never tired of them and it's strange because I don't care a lot for most of her books as Nora Roberts.

I haven't read any but own 4 of the Dirk Pitt books and 2 of the NUMA books.
Thanks Carol and Brenda for the information. 15 books back to back Brenda, I am impressed!

They don't sound anywhere near as exciting as the Oregon series.

>9 Sergeirocks: Some of them can be, in places... but I believe I said when we talked about reading some Clive Cussler that I liked the Oregon series the best of all of them.
