Should Chris feel responsible for what happened to Nicky?

No, I think Nicky's cards were dealt by other members of Chris's family. Chris was only a boy when all this presumably began.

Chris was in no way responsible for what happened to Nicky but he feels guilty and that is going to set the tone for the remainder of his life in the story. I believe he is going to try to prove that Nicky's father was innocent of killing Joshua.

No Chris and Nicky were best friends and Chris didn't kill Nicky. Someone else killed Nicky or Nicky committed suicide.

I don't think he's responsible but I think he feels some guilt for the way his family benefited from it.

The only thing he is "responsible" for is not going back to look for Nicky when he was old enough to do so. By then so much had changed in either of their lives, I don't think this would have made any significant change in Nicky's life. Though that would make him feel (unreasonably) guilty, when confronted with the evidence of all the bad things that happened to Nicky and his family.

no. As far as we know, his only part in any of this is that he is part of the family
