It's still early and there aren't many clues yet.

Morse gives the impression he's playing it by ear, there doesn't seem to be a set procedure to follow. I suspect his haphazard methods are very misleading, and that he is a very good detective.
Why has he latched on to Lewis? There is no mention of any previous sidekick. On the face of things, Morse looks to be difficult to work with...

>4 Sergeirocks: You are right in your assessment of Morse. I thought that the author was giving the reader the idea that we had just dropped into a very successful police unit and not that it was the beginning of something new...so Lewis was someone that Morse maybe had watched for awhile and liked the way he worked and wanted to work with him. it certainly would have helped him advance. I always thought that Lewis was to Morse what Joe is to Vera.

>4 Sergeirocks: I agree that Morse's behavior and attitude is misleading--perhaps a deliberate deception to keep people off guard.
I like that he picked up Lewis as a sidekick. He seemed impressed by Lewis style at the crime scene.

It seemed a very low key start to an investigation and quite a slow start! I like the fact the series starts with a new detective sergeant starting with Morse, as yet they haven't established a relationship but possibly some early signs Morse likes him.
