He must have run away or else lived in the attic. Running away was a more likely scenario.

Before we knew what actually happened, I thought his father might have somehow convinced him to run away.

He could only have escaped; but I couldn't imagine how a 10-year-old boy would manage to escape the system and grow up to be a functioning member of society - which he had to be because we weren't introduced to any down-and-outs in the book who we could have as suspects.
