Edward Milliard and Debbie Griffin were killed by what we would now call a "home invader." See Killing Time.

Two guys pleaded guilty, but there is no clear, outstanding suspect -- just basically the whole Manson Family. At least the ones who weren't locked up at the time he and his wife Lauren disappeared.
