I'm looking for the title of a book from my childhood. Hopefully you folks can help me identify it!
The book was a horror short story anthology book. Because I remember reading it at my grandfather’s house, this must have been published before 1997. I believe it was a book that I got through Scholastic Book ordering or at a similar book fair in middle school. The cover was an illustration (not a great one, glossy too) of a kid wearing a blue shirt and a ripped face, underneath his ripped skin was a reptilian face. This was from one of the stories. The three stories I remember from this book were:
1) The kid from the cover is trying to fit in with the other kids. They are mean to him. It’s Halloween and he keeps going on about how awesome his costume will be. When he shows up for Halloween, he’s just wearing his regular clothes. They make fun of him and he gets upset and removes “his mask”, revealing that he’s a reptile alien.
2) A future story were kids are traveling on a “space bus”. There’s a terrible explosion and the bus crashes on an unknown planet. Everyone dies except for one kid. He wanders the planet, and finds a strange alien (floating head transparent head) that has been exiled there. The alien tortures him into being its friend, eventually using powerful magic (?) to make the kid think he’s at home living his life (al la The Matrix) when in reality he’s trapped on this strange planet forever.
3) The future, there’s a war going on and the main character is fighting in it. He talks about how his dad died in war, and his grandfather and his great grandfather. He gets separated from his unit and finds the corpses of his father and grandfather. He dies in a similar way. Story ends in the future with his adult son in another war finding his corpse too.
4) There might have been a story about a haunted shoes.
I know this book is not any of the following scary stories series: Scary Stores to Tell in the Dark, Tales of the Midnight Hour, Scariest Stories you Ever hear, Short and Shivery, or Scary Stories for Sleep Overs. (Those are all amazing and I own them!). These books stand out because, like the above ones, they were incredibly dark.
Could the second one be The Silver Kiss? It's got teenagers and vampires and was first published in 1990.
The cover on Nicholas Adams's Vampire's Kiss matches your description, and involves vampires, though I can't find a reference to one named "Flint."
