The US and the USSR have seeded each other's land with a bacteria that, when exposed to radiation from a nuke, will mutate into a deadly pathogen. The protagonist is a little girl with a macaw she calls her idiot little brother. Her father works for a government agency searching out people that would be immune to this disease.
The immune people are classified into four groups. AA types are geniuses whose intelligence is supported in their upbringing. AB types are geniuses who are discouraged from developing their intelligence. BA types are people of ordinary intelligence who are pushed beyond their abilities by people treating them as geniuses. BB types are people of ordinary intelligence who are given a normal upbringing.
Nukes fly. People die. The girl survives in the family fallout shelter. She goes out in search of other survivors and ultimately is sent into space to stop a Soviet doomsday weapon.
