I'm listening to Life is Beautiful, beautiful classical music. Useful working music. But a few minutes ago it was Freedom, by Yothu Yindi.

I just bought the new Sheryl Crow album and really like it a lot. I also stuck in Over the Rhine's Ohio in the player and am enjoying that as well. Next is a couple of older Coheed & Cambria albums.

I admire those of you who listen to whole CDs all the way through. I have some sort of musical ADHD; sometimes I don't even make it through an entire song before I skip to something else. There are very few albums I can listen to in their entirety.

41Bookmarque

I find myself doing less and less full album listening these days, too. It's the download/digital era I think. The playlist is king. Last week I worked from home and had an all vinyl day. Was cool, but made me dwell on the lost art of the album both musically and visually. Luckily, I can indulge in both full albums and just tracks.

Chose Bloody Kisses by Type O Negative as my next listen. These guys lend themselves to all album listening since they approach their music that way and don't really have "hits". Plus they're a lot of fun and Peter Steele is dead sexy.

I put my mp3 player on random at work, which means I get John Mayer next to Bach next to Sally Rogers (folk) next to a track from RENT...makes for an interesting day, I have to say.

Today I heard a couple of songs from the Rocky Horror Picture Show and it made me want to listen to the whole thing, so I did. Not exactly work-appropriate, I think, but it's ok since I have headphones.

#41 I used to have a vinyl collection, but was forced to give it up when I moved overseas. Someday, when I get some extra money I will start rebuilding a collection of vinyl and buy some nice vacuum tubes to build myself an amp (I enjoy woodworking and doing simple circuit designs). I have always been somewhat of an analog nut; but given that most modern vinyl is digitally mastered (aka a CD master) it's a bit of a moot point for modern releases.

I really wish that music labels would release alternative masters of albums that break the paradigm of 'this CD has to be the loudest in the changer' mentality. I would kill for an old-school remastering of some of the newer albums out there; but alas, I know there isn't really a market for that type of thing.

Today was an icky day at work, between the migraine that the meds were only just barely keeping at bay, the meds themselves making me slow and a bit dizzy, and some other stuff I won't go into, so I listened to some movie soundtracks - Pride and Prejudice (the BBC/A&E version), Children of Dune, Much Ado About Nothing, and A Walk in the Clouds. Great stuff. And, during the last half hour, Shrek, which is more like a mix with a bunch of really random songs than a soundtrack.

I started a new audiobook, The Thirteenth Tale, but it was just too verbose for me. The narrator in the story does a lot of ruminating, and I don't like a lot of ruminating. I like things concise and to the point. So I dropped 13th and started "Middlesex," which I'm enjoying much more so far.

In the music area, my new favorite band is The Feeling. Apparently they've already got quite a following in the UK, but haven't really broken Stateside at all. I discovered them on a Sundance Channel music series. If you like upbeat, hooky pop that'll have you singing along in no time, give The Feeling a try---for a good, characteristic first listen, try "Love It When You Call":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubqQbvYZZTs

Angels and Airwaves is also a recent fave, noteworthy for their richly layered sound and the almost militantly positive messages of their songs. Here's a great first listen from A&A, "The Adventure":
