I remember very little about this book. There was a young boy protagonist, possibly also a young girl.

At some point in the story, they are riding some kind of bat or horse like winged creature. The closest thing I can thing of is a Thestral from the Harry Potter series. It may have even been the cover art?

I read this in 1988 or 1989 while I was in JR high school. Sadly, that is about all I can concretely remember.

Could it have been A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle?

The Magician's Nephew features a boy and girl riding a winged horse (and some editions have that as the cover art). It might be too well known, though.

I looked over the cover art and synopsis of both A Swiftly Tilting Planet and the Magician's Nephew. Nothing rang a bell. The 'horse' in my memory is really not very horse-like. I have a memory of leather like wings. It seemed a bit frightening.

Dark Lord of Derkholm features flying horse-type things and "leathery-winged avians". It's a comedy though, so a bit of a long shot.

Hmm. I looked up a bit more about the book. It doesn't feel familiar at all. Does sound really interesting though! :)
