Hi, In approximately 1990 I read a smallish paperback fantasy book about a girl who lives on rooftops in a large city like London or Paris. She knew the rooftops very well and could run across them. She may have been a part of a rag tag group of friendly ne'er do wells. I can't recall the plot but I'm sure there was adventure involved. Perhaps it was a little gothic in style. I remember a black cat involved but I can't recall if it was in the story or just on the cover illustration. I believe the cover was a black and white ink drawing. In retrospect the cover looked like it may have been published in the 70s or early 80s.

Any help appreciated!

Your description reminds me of the cover to Plain Kate by Erin Bow (there's a black cat and a girl on a rooftop overlooking a city), but given that it was published in 2010, I rather doubt it's the book you're looking for.

Huh. Seems a fairly popular theme this decade.

Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster is set on the rooftops of Victorian London, but published in 2018.

Rooftoppers is a girl in Paris, published this year.

I went looking for tags that you might explore, but only found 'chimney sweeps.' which won't help if your character isn't one.

Better set your thinking cap down a bit more fully and pull more details, if possible.
