Black Friday is Almost Here

That's the subject line of an email I've just received. The text reads "Check your inbox after midnight tonight for your exclusive offer ..."
The Mole assures me it's not worth getting excited about. And if it really is exclusive, I guess I'll be the only one to receive it.
>1 folio_books: I've just received a hard copy mailing which informs me of £5 off (Code PXMSUK), plus a free diary plus free delivery for a five or more book purchase. I'm in the UK.
This is 'exclusive' in the sense it's not available to anyone who doesnt know about it!
>2 HuxleyTheCat: £5 off (Code PXMSUK), plus a free diary plus free delivery for a five or more book purchase.
The Mole was quite right, then. Now let me see - the pending order currently in my basket is for five books totalling a smidge below £300. Will £5 be enough to swing the deal?
Edited to add: Just received the mailing this afternoon. I think I can safely empty the basket now and keep £300 in my pocket.
>2 HuxleyTheCat: I received the same mailing, and it would appear that is the Christmas offering. Its valid until December 23rd.
>6 Czernobog: The exclusive offer might be something else,
That's a reasonable point. Could be Folio showering us with gifts - a £5 voucher AND an exclusive offer. It may even be worth waiting until midnight before scooping the cash back into my wallet. The Mole has been fairly insistent about Black Friday not being something to get excited about, though.
If you think a £5 discount is not much then consider this e-mail I received from Taschen this afternoon titled "Invest smart! Get these Limited Editions for less before 2020." And then this quote: "From January 1st, 2020, some of our latest Limited Editions will increase in price. Secure yours for less today!" Here's an example screenshot:
It might be just me but I think this is
Folio posted on Facebook earlier today:
We will announce a special offer tomorrow!
Wow, I wonder how they justify such a price increase for something that must already be in their warehouse? Unbelievable.
>10 SF-72: So they can sell it for 3500 euros in the annual half price off sale.
Free delivery to Australia for inflated Australian prices.
Tempting but no.
Do they do that? I'm surprised, in Germany there's supposed to be a fixed price on books unless they're out of print or damaged. But I've read that taschen sell new books cheaper during a sale claiming they've got slight damage when they don't. Is that the half price sale?
>13 SF-72: Every year they have a big out of print/display copy/damaged book sale. I've bought tens of books from this sale over the years and every book has come sealed, in the original packaging, and undamaged.
The "exclusive offer" for me was "Free standard delivery on any order containing at least one full-priced book until 23.59pm Monday 2 December. Excludes the purchase of limited editions."
Not earthshaking, but for overseas buyers who wanted just one book which is unlikely to be discounted soon, it is in fact quite tempting...
If I can order two books, one with the $7 discount and one at regular price, and then save $28 on shipping, that’s a total savings of $35 and something I’d be probably take advantage of.
Here in the UK £5 plus free shipping amounts to something like a 10% discount even on a modest order (much less on a big one). So I'd say it's more of a muddy grey Friday.
Also, my "exclusive" Black Friday deal seems to be automatically added for everyone at checkout...
Does anyone know if there is an US voucher code? I tried PXMSUK and PXMSUS and neither one worked. I am getting the free standard shipping automatically, but this is a gift and it would be helpful to also apply even a negligible discount. Please advise.
T & Cs Apply:
Black Friday Offer
Free standard delivery
Orders must be placed by 23.59 Monday 2 December 2019
Express delivery will be charged at regular rate
Does not include Limited Editions or other items with special postage
No cash alternative
Cannot be applied to previous orders
>21 UK_History_Fan: those of us in the US did not get an additional discount beyond the free shipping, so there is no voucher code
Edit: I stand corrected. I didn’t get a discount code, but clearly there is one. See next post from >24
>21 UK_History_Fan: I am in the US and got a code good for $7 off an order. Sometime in the past week but might be in recycling. Hang on and I'll see if I can find it.
US code for $7 off is PXMSUC
ETA: updated to correct code
Ok thanks for clarifying. I was confused because the discount quoted in >16 Mr.Fox: was $7 so I assumed there was a US equivalent.
>25 UK_History_Fan: Added to my initial post, but here it is again. I haven't tried to use it. Came in the mail.
US code for $7 off is PXMSUC
ETA: updated to correct code
>27 wdripp: "US code for $7 off is PMXUC"
Is this for any sized order or for some minimum book or dollar amount?
So I'm trying to place a large order with 4 instalments, but it's impossible to speak to the London Office (who alone can sanction such things) because, if the lines are busy, calls are automatically diverted to Cornwall. The Cornwall lady conducted some market research (Was I new to Folio? Was I in the UK? etc, etc.) before admitting she couldn't authorise instalments.
"Can you please transfer me to London, then?"
"Can you give me a direct number?"
"No. Have a nice day."
Apparently they have to email London to get someone there to phone me back "before the end of the day".*
The delightful Sally phones me back within 5 minutes.
"Can I have the instalment plan, please?"
"Certainly. No trouble at all."
All accomplished in a few minutes to everyone's satisfaction, and a little genuine small talk beyond "Have a nice day".
I put the phone down, leaned back, and was astonished to find I wasn't in a warm bath with a glass of wine at my elbow and soft music playing in the background.
* Not, of course, the fault of the Cornwall lady who is just following orders, but a glimpse of the way Folio's customer service will probably go once the company makeover is complete.
>28 treereader: The offer is: $7 off every order plus a free Folio diary 2020 with every order plus free delivery when you buy 5 or more books
fine print: one or more full-price books, free standard delivery, excludes limited editions, offer ends midnight Dec 23rd
Presumaby the free shipping Black Friday sale will trump the 5 books or more free shipping, but I have not tried to use either incentive.
PMXUC doesn't work for me (in the US). I plan to order two books, but it doesn't work even if I add 5 or more to my basket.
I am getting the same error "The Voucher code "PMXUC" is not valid".
Has anyone in the US been successful getting this to work?
>31 kronnevik: I just tried it and it didn't work for me either. Unfortunately, that probably means you'll need to call to use it. What a pain.
And we see how well calling works. I don't love that they have to call back.
Sean, being safe in the UK I'm only guessing, but I'd try PXMSUC instead: parallel to the PXMSUK, but with UC for Us and Canada.
>34 UK_History_Fan: Apologies, when I replied with the code I was uncaffeinated, and wrote it down incorrectly. The code in my brochure (mailed to a US address) is PXMSUC.
I just tried it and it worked.
>38 wdripp: "I just tried it and it worked."
Ditto. PXMSUC worked for a single book, with diary, for US shipping. Thanks!
I just had a lovely conversation with Andrew. He placed the order for me and both the free shipping and the $7 discount was applied.
But I would not have even known about the promotion without this group - so as always my sincere gratitude for all the latest Folio Society news. I had to remove myself from the Folio email list because it was too many emails with no filter, often promoting books I'd already purchased directly from Folio!
>40 UK_History_Fan: I am very sorry that my mistyped discount code resulted in a call to FS, but I'm glad you got one of the good CS reps, and the discount for your order.
I decided to order Marco Polo. I never order a single book due to the shipping costs, so this was a treat!
Oh, if anyone in the US wants a free diary, I already have one and another on the way, and won't use either. Send me a PM with your address if you'd like one.
>29 boldface: FRUSTRATION
This is the problem the "new" telephone system was supposed to solve. Ring the number, choose option 2 for Customer Services and never speak with Cornwall again. Or that's the theory. Perhaps at busy times it reverts to what you've just described. It took quite a few frustrating calls before I figured out they do not have the capability to switch the call from Cornwall to the London number.
Out of curiosity, is there also a voucher code for ROW? I didn't receive one, but you never know.
>46 SF-72: yes there is: PXMSUK should give you a 5 gbp discount if my mailing was correct.
I think I went wrong by choosing option 1 which is for making an order. I'll go for option 2 in future and cut direct to Customer Service(s).
I picked up A Hero Born with free shipping and £5 off. Was going to have it on my big order in a couple weeks time but might as well get it early.
That is kind of you, but absolutely no apologies needed. I am just happy for the information this forum provided and was not bothered by having a lovely conversation with Andrew today.
>48 boldface: I think I went wrong by choosing option 1 which is for making an order.
I choose option 2 every time now, even when I'm calling to place an order. Especially when calling to place an order!
>15 HarpsichordKnight: ”Not earthshaking, but for overseas buyers who wanted just one book which is unlikely to be discounted soon, it is in fact quite tempting...“
FS caught me in their Black Friderweb as well! I ordered the one book I was enamored with since its publication: The Mask Of Command by John Keegan. £5.- discount and free shipping was too good to pass up.
I will receive a free 2020 diary. I also have a still shrinkwrapped 2019 diary. Free (except shipping) for any Devotee. Send me a PM if interested, I’m located in The Netherlands.
Long-time lurker first-time poster from Australia here, made an account just now as I finally had something worth contributing.
On a hunch I tried PXMSAU for Aussies and it worked - I got $10 off in addition to the free shipping offer. Picked up Howl's Moving Castle plus the 2020 Folio Diary for AU$59.99 total.
Going to enjoy reading this to my daughter at Christmas :)
Welcome to FSD fellow Aussie, and thanks for your enablement.
Hope you enjoy your interaction with FSD in the future.
Where are you on the continent?
Welcome >54 KeppetFS: to the forum! What a sweet choice of book and purpose. I went for a gift to myself, you on the other hand seized the opportunity to share in the upcoming festive season. That we may meet again in other interesting topics!
I took the opportunity to snap up The Wind in the Willows. I've had my eye on it for some time now and I can't see it becoming sale fodder anytime soon. With £5 off, free shipping and the diary I think this is a pretty good Black Friday offer. Thanks Folio! Already looking forward to reading it to the kids in a few years time.
Thank you for the code. I'm in Australia too. When I applied the code, it did give me the $10 discount but it is still charging me for shipping. Did this happen to you too? Does it change in the final window? Help please!
Unless you ordered express shipping or a limited edition, there should not be a shipping charge added at checkout. Worked fine for me.
Offer ends at midnight Sunday in Australia (not sure which time zone they are using).
If problems, phone lines for orders are open 24 hours, so call.
Thank you so much, Warwick. I have just rung them and Shaun processed my order over the phone.
I'm looking forward to receiving Howl's Moving Castle and How to See Fairies plus a diary as well. Thrilled!
Glad I read about the free shipping thing here. Picked up True Grit and made use of the $7 voucher. Nice little deal altogether.
>55 wcarter: South Coast of NSW here. Thanks everyone for the welcome!
I took advantage of the free shipping and the £5 discount to order the new Alice in Wonderland standard edition and The Dispossessed. My christmas gift guide with the voucher came friday (to Germany).
Nothing for me this time, as i splurged on a Nick Drake box set, remembered for a while. So, next up new years sale for me !
Couldn't resist the free shipping lure (and another use of the voucher). Grabbed Diversity of Life before the deadline.
Anyone know if their standard shipping still comes slowly from Spain nowadays? Really hated that change.
>66 adriano77: I’m located in California, and my recent orders (standard shipping) have each arrived in about a week instead of the old 2-4 week window that I used to experience.
Interesting. It used to take 8 days to (eastern) Canada like clockwork. Then the change happened and it started taking 2+ weeks. Meanwhile, any non-FS order I'd get from the UK using standard Royal Mail kept the 8 day window without fail.
