I would say that he is pretty stupid if he thought he was going to outdo the Crew!

He's power hungry and egotistical. I believe that he sees himself as another Juan...capable of anything he sets out to do or anything that he wants. jealousy of Juan's accomplishments may also be a motivator for him.
