YA book, friends in a cafe

All I can remember from this book is that there were some friends, I think three, sitting in a cafe, and they had a book they wrote poetry in, or something close to that. I think one of the characters only drank hot chocolate. They didn't stay friends, they only became friends by circumstance. I think the book is set much later after this event, and it's a character investigating something that has happened to one of the three friends, though I could be mixing titles. The poetry book is important somehow to the plot, but I can't remember. The cafe is relevant too, somehow.

Sounds vaguely like the description of The Authenticity Project by Clare Pooley. But I haven't read the book -- only the description.
