I read this book in 2018 (borrowed from a library).
It is about a woman living in a French village during the German occupation of World War 2. She is living with her nasty mother in law. Her husband is absent for the story, away at war. She has a friend that she visits in the village and 2 children. They help an escaped prisoner or slave and I think hide him in the attic. The children leave food at the fence where the prisoners are kept. German officers move into the house next to the woman. One of them helps her when one of her children get sick (? maybe was a doctor?). She ends up having a relationship with the German officer. He helps them but ends up being send away to the Eastern front. She meets up with one of the other German officers after the war and finds out what happened to him.
I can't remember the name of the book or the author but would appreciate help finding this book.

The Soldier's Wife by Margaret Leroy would be my guess.
