in this book, a family is getting their backyard renovated when the landscape people find a body buried in the ground. they quickly leave because they're illegal immigrants and don't want the police to deport them. the daughter goes outside to find the body and then calls her boyfriend (i believe) to ask him what she should do. he comes over and she takes the dead man's wallet. the rest of the family come out and call the police. they get questioned and her and her boyfriend get in a huge fight over the wallet and the coins in it. the daughter is mixed, with her dad being white and her mom being black. idk about the boyfriend.
there are two different perspectives, the first one being from the daughter and the second being from who i assume to be the killer. this dude was white and had a native american mom. he was forced by his dad to start working in the family owned store but i don't remember why. his dad's store secretly delivered record players to black people after it closed. he also got into a fight with a black man at the bar after the man started to flirt with the girl he liked (the girl liked the black man though). this part of the book was set in the 1920's i think and the other part was in present day.
i don't remember whether it was non-fiction or not but i do remember what the cover looked like. it was sort of sepia filtered, where the only color on it went from white to brown like black and white photos. it was also hardcover. i also read it quite recently, like last year and got it from my school but i already checked it's online library and couldn't find it.
i never finished the book so this isn't all but it's as far as i got. i would like to find out what it's called because i do remember it being very interesting. thank you.
