Does anyone have opinions on which translation of Proust's In Search of Lost Time I should read? I just bought the version by Moncrieff updated by Kilmartin (1981), but it looks like there were bigger translation projects later.

Hi, sorry for such a long delay in responding, but I am currently going through old posts and deleting and came across this...
I read the entire series of Proust's in the Modern Library Edition printed in 1992. It was originally translated by Moncrieff and Kilmartin 1981 for Random House, and the in 1992 revisions were made by D. J. Enright for Modern Library. I did a lot of research prior to buying the Modern Library Editions and to the best of my knowledge they were the highest rated at the time. By the way the series was excellent. I hope you enjoyed.

>2 LadyLo:, same edition I'm reading. It has enough praise and reputation I didn't worry about looking for any alternative. I think you'd have to be very particular about translation techniques to wish to choose something else.
