ER Reminder Messages Going Out

1AbigailAdams26
Sep 15, 2022, 3:42 pm

Hey All! I wanted to let you know that we are instituting a new system of bi-monthly LibraryThing messages, bringing members' ER Reviewing Score to their attention, and reminding them of any missing reviews.

The first batch should be going out now. Please let me know if you have any questions about the messages, or about your score. You can reach out to me via private message, here on LibraryThing, or email me at: abigailadams@librarything.com.

Smart way to get me to review my books: get me a new stat to obsess over. Now back to combining.

What a cool idea! It will also serve as a reminder to report books not received. Thanks for coming up with this.

Do you follow up with the publisher when a specific number of members mark a book as "not received"? I know sometimes book releases are cancelled; but other times, LT Reviewers post reviews for awarded books that didn't arrive on my side.

This is a great idea -- embarrassing that I haven't read/reviewed these -- but an excellent idea.

I found that I was 3 reviews behind. So was going to fix this. But in doing so, I accidentally selected a book https://www.librarything.com/work/27748745 as received when I haven't. Can't change it back to not received.

Also https://www.librarything.com/ner/detail/44298/Runecursed was never received.

Query:

According to this post: https://www.librarything.com/topic/341449#7823972, Your Reviewing Score is calculated using wins and reviews from the last two years.

I received a message that said:
Your Early Reviewers score is 33%. Your score could use some improvement. Submit those missing reviews! You have won 3 giveaways in the last two years. You have submitted 1 review, with 1 still outstanding.

Shouldn't my ER score be 50%, since one of those three books was never received?

I like the idea of reminders, I just don’t understand the math. For example, from my reminder…..

You have won 7 giveaways in the last two years. You have submitted 6 reviews, with 3 still outstanding.

7-6=3?

>8 manatree: if one of the books was recent or not received, then that will account for the missing "one" in the math.

>9 lemontwist:

That doesn't add up. ;-))

If manatree has submitted 6 reviews out of 7, how can there be 3 outstanding? S/he's obviously received at least 6 of the 7 wins, so even if the 7th was not received or recent, where are the other 2 outstanding reviews coming from?

>10 lilithcat: Yep. This engineer cannot add. LOL

Would love to write reviews for books I've received... but some of these books cannot be added! And when the closest thing have been added, it adds a separate entry and the review doesn't count :(

Anyone else got this problem?

Example:
Book name: Summary of Silva Mind Control Method: The Revolutionary Program by the Founder of the World's Most Famous Mind Control Course (Sept 2022 batch)

Here is the book listed from the giveaway: https://www.librarything.com/work/28736423
Here is what the book URL should be attached to: https://www.librarything.com/work/book/226558333 (source was amazon.com)

Can the book be combined somehow? I've tried adding it as different authors too (Book Summary Publishing, Essential Reads) manually, but it still will not attach :(

Thanks in advanced!

>12 AceArtemis7: Combined; but I think you may have to wait for the regular job that will credit you your review with the ER program.

After I got the notice, I checked the books. A good reminder.

Again, I like the idea of the reminders, I just don’t understand the math. From my latest reminder:

“Your Early Reviewers score is 67%. Your score could use some improvement. Submit those missing reviews!”

“You have won 9 giveaways in the last two years. You have submitted 6 reviews, with 5 still outstanding.”

9-6=5?

Also, I went back and looked at the books that I have won in the past two years (December 2020 - November 2022) and I have won and I have won 12 books, have reviewed 6. One book was never received, and another was from the October 22 batch and has not arrived yet.

So I understand that 6 (reviews) + 5 (still outstanding) = 11. I’ve won 12. I’m assuming that the difference of 1 is to account for either the one that I reported as never received or the win from last month.

Granted, I don’t enjoy math, but……

—and yes, I realize that I am behind in my Early Reviews reading as I have been distracted by a lot of required reading for work. I have the notes for three of the outstanding reviews, I just haven’t massaged them into a coherent thought and posted them yet.

Is there a way to opt out of these messages? I have not requested a book in about 2 years and I doubt that I will again.

>17 fhudnell: Go here https://www.librarything.com/ner/settings and select "deactivate". Keep in mind that you will need to re-sign-up for Early Reviewers if you do decide to request a book in the future.

I sent a message.

Similar issues to what's already asked/reported here, I think. I have a couple of (long ago) books marked as Not Received that were taken into account in the percentage (I don't think it should do that). Plus by my calculations the percentage is off.

>16 manatree:
The 'missing one' is explained by your win from October 2022. LTER doesn't take wins from the last two months into account, as they don't want to put too much pressure on you to review.
See this excerpt:

Your Reviewing Score is calculated using wins and reviews from the last two years.
Wins from the last two batches are excluded from your win count, but as soon as you have reviewed them, the review will count in your favor. (So there is no penalty for not having received a recent win, but you do get credit for reviewing recent ER books promptly.)

>4 aspirit: Apologies for the delayed response! The publishers and authors I follow up with are almost always those whose winners have reached out to me. Often, I am requesting that specific copies be replaced. But if I notice that multiple people have contacted me about the same title/giveaway, then I will make enquiries, in terms of whether the books were sent in the first place.

If you notice other winners of a specific book are reviewing, and you have not received your copy, then that would be the former case. Please let me know, and I can request replacements, provided too much time has not passed.

>6 EdwinKort: I have taken a look at your ER wins page, and have removed the Received mark for those two titles. Unfortunately, it is now too late to follow up on them, but if you mark them as Not Received, the lack of a review will not count against you, when calculating your ER reviewing score.

26AbigailAdams26
Dec 2, 2022, 10:10 am

>7 lilithcat: At the time your score was calculated, you had three books won in the last two years, one reviewed and two marked Received. Did you mean to mark one of those two as Not Received? If so, please let me know which one.

In any case, now that it is December, you have only two books won in the last two years, which means your score is indeed now 50%.

>8 manatree: My apologies for the confusion! We designed the score so that you would get immediate credit for all reviews, but not be penalized for not reviewing recent books, or books not received.

We exclude giveaways won in the most recent two monthly batches from the win total, so the system ignores them, if no review is written. But we include them in reviews posted, so you get credit for being prompt, in posting the review.

This means that, at that time, you had actually won two more giveaways than the total listed, but they weren’t officially being considered as wins yet.

>12 AceArtemis7: >13 lesmel: Looks like this was a simple combination issue. Thanks, lesmel, for fixing that.

These issues can also be raised in the following thread: https://www.librarything.com/topic/337415. Please note, that is the 2nd thread for this issue, please use that one, rather than the old one, which was closed.

>16 manatree: >21 Yuki-Onna: Yes, Yuki-Onna has it right. The system does not consider wins in the last month as wins. This is so you are not penalized for the lack of a review. That being said, we did want to give you credit for prompt reviews, as this is something publishers and authors really appreciate (as do we).
