I think I will try again. It will be the first time in 14 weeks that I don't have to attend or watch a ballgame. Also, it will be too cold to garden. I have 13 library books and several purchased books as well.

After having missed the past couple of weeks, I am definitely in for this weekend!

Yes, please! I’m still recovering from Covid and a quiet weekend of reading is just what I need

I'm in, though I've got a fairly busy weekend planned, so I'm not sure how much reading time I'll have.

I'll be reading in between a couple holiday events Sat and Sun.
I finished my Christmas cards, invitations, and menus for family get-togethers. Made some headway on Christmas shopping . .

Saturday morning update
Books read from: I am reading Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century by William Rosen and Shooting at Chateau Rock by Martin Walker. I am listening to House of Sticks: A Memoir by Ly Tran.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Women Talking by Miriam Toews
Book Thoughts: I am not finding much time to read this week. I wanted to finish the Bruno Courreges book and start the one by Donna Leon but that's not happening this week. House of Sticks is making me irritated at the author. She has been a very privileged person with scholarships for free schooling, and really not a bad life at all, and she whines on and on about how her parents didn't understand her and she was a bad daughter, and how she has such terrible depression. I find her sullen, angry, and whiney. However, I wanted to read more books about immigrants and second generation immigrants and so I am continuing with this memoir. It had good reviews so it can't be just a "I's such a bad person who had this horrible life" screed?
Non Book Activities: I am going to start my Christmas baking today and get ready to host my Christmas party tomorrow. I have lots to gather and get into the car so I can take it to party site. I want to bake two gingerbread cakes today and will cook my pork for the sliders in the crockpot tonight. It will be a busy day. I did not get all my retirement paperwork done last week so will have to go to work on Monday. For some reason I can't login to my network so I can't get e-mail or really do my job since I can't login to the library databases. Without the e-mail I can't complete the paperwork for the retirement and I can't apply for the small rural public library that has an opening. Fortunately, I still have some time for both things, but it is so frustrating.
Time reading: 1 hour this morning
Time posting:
Food: my regular weekend cappuccino from Starbucks and a slice of the sourdough rye bread that I brought back from Bozeman.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 287

Did you like Women Talking? started it a while back then put it down.
Interested in your small rural library. Kansas or Alabama?!
I'm retired but like to do some library-related volunteering now and again.
Book:
finished 99th book for the year No Plan B by Lee Child.
Next up is Miss Eliza's English Kitchen for book club
Dinner last night: lamb curry
Other activity:
getting ready to make curry/chutney stuffed eggs to take to the neighborhood holiday party later.
cloudy, 49 F. (9 C.)

>15 nrmay:
I have mixed feelings about Women Talking. I worked in several schools in western Kansas and there are lots of Anabaptist groups in that area, including several different sects of Mennonites. None of them had the kind of rules that were in place in Women Talking. Several of them still spoke Plattdeutsch, or a different dialect of German that they spoke in Russia. Those two groups couldn't understand each other so they mostly spoke English. All of these groups send their children, both sexes, to school until they reach the age of 16. If students want to go on to school they are shunned by their families. But shunning doesn't mean a total lack of seeing or communication. One teacher I worked with came from a Mennonite family, and since she had graduated from high school and college she could not go into her parents home. Because there were several of the girls and at least one boy who graduated from high school the parents built what they called a picnic shelter about 1/4 of a mile from the house and that was where they had Sunday meals and other family celebrations. Some Mennonite groups in Kansas have strict dress codes and some don't. Some farm with modern equipment and some don't, but all the children go to school and meet the state law requirements for education. I realize that Women Talking takes place in a different country but the Mennonites in that book are totally something different than the ones I know.
I also had some problems with the writing. I had heard lots of positive feedback on this book and the reviews of it in the professional literature were very favorable. Perhaps I expected too much? I have not read any other books by Miriam Toews but I expected much more from her. This book didn't draw me in, and its spare, and often terse style just didn't make this an outstanding book for me. I think I needed more background to understand the motivations of the various women in the novel. I think that is why it didn't tug me back to reading it once I put it down. I did finish the novel but I am going to say that this must not be Toews best work.

Saturday morning update:
Books read from: Racing the Light, The Rising Tide (wrong touchstone for The Rising Tide, should be Anne Cleeves)
Books finished: Racing the Light
Book thoughts: Racing the Light by Robert Crais is part of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series. I have read all of them but think this is the best. He tells a good story but the writing is not outstanding. The Rising Tide is part of the Vera Stanhope series. The writing is much better but the story can be bleak sometimes.
Time reading: 3 hours
Time posting: 7:00 AM
Snacks: turkey sandwich and red pepper soup
Thoughts: I don't usually read 2 mysteries back-to-back but these 2 will be due soon and will not be renewable. I prefer to mix genres for variety. My next book is nonfiction, The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis. The topic is related to the one in Moneyball. He may be my favorite nonfiction writer at the moment.

Good morning fellow readers and happy Sunday to you!
>17 benitastrnad: Thanks, Benita, for your comments. I was interested in the book again because the movie is coming out in Jan. Cast is top-notch with Frances McDormand, Claire Foy and Rooney Mara. I like to read the book before the movie because if I see the movie first, I may not pick up the book when I already know the story.
Books:
Miss Eliza's English Kitchen: A Novel of Victorian Cookery and Friendship
Memory Man is my audio book. I need to get out for more long walks to finish this.
I just checked out Secret Lives of Church Ladies, a BB from an LT reader.
Good food:
Sat. dinner was appetizers & desserts at our neighborhood party
my husband, Chef Bob, is making blueberry pancakes for breakfast/brunch.
Other activity: reading the Sunday papers
Cloudy, 48 F.
>16 susanna.fraser: I remember the those dark, overcast days in Seattle, but when the sun does come out - the evergreens and lakes are like brilliant emeralds and sapphires!

Sunday night update
Books read from: I am reading Third Horseman: Climate Change and the Great Famine of the 14th Century by William Rosen and Shooting at Chateau Rock by Martin Walker. I am listening to House of Sticks: A Memoir by Ly Tran.
Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: Women Talking by Miriam Toews. House of Sticks: A Memoir by Ly Tran
Book Thoughts: I finished listening to House of Sticks and it still irritated me. She has been a very privileged person with scholarships for free schooling, and really not a bad life at all, and she whines on and on about how her parents didn't understand her and she was a bad daughter, and how she has such terrible depression. I find her sullen, angry, and whiney. I wanted to like this book because the reviews were so positive, but I didn't.
At the same time, I wanted to read more books about the immigrant experience and about the children of immigrants and so I persevered with this memoir. I thought it ended up being an "I's such a bad person who had this horrible life" screed.
Non Book Activities: My Christmas party went off without a hitch. 18 of the 30 I invited came and we had plenty of food. My Gingerbread cake was a hit. I have only 6 sliders to bring home and those will be lunch this week. I am looking forward to getting my retirement paperwork done tomorrow and I hope to get my computer login issues dealt with as well.
Time reading: 1 hour this morning
