Welcome to our new members.
If any of you are like me and loathe to type all your books into the LT catalog, I would like to (unofficially) recommend a cuecat. The cuecat scans in your books by reading the bar codes and automatically adds them.
Happy LibraryThinging! :)

I count as a new member, right? Thanks very much for the welcome.

I'm a 22 year old Political Science grad student who loves music (almost all kinds), films, partying, travelling and books, books, books.

I started reading what are presently considered romances at the tender age of 11 when I spotted Nan Ryan's The Sun God on my mother's bookshelf. (I thought it was a book on greek mythology at first until I saw the racy pictures on the inside cover ;).) Since then I went through the trials of fire--Harlequins/Mills & Boons/Silhouettes and Barbara Cartland--and have seen my favourite authors fall to romantic suspense. (I tend to prefer straight romance.)

My favourite authors are Shannon McKenna, Lisa Kleypas, Emma Holly and Nora Roberts as J.D. Robb. Old-time favourites--authors whose earlier work I prefer to what they write now--are Linda Howard, Iris Johansen, Julie Garwood and Jayne Ann Krentz. I also enjoy some of the novels of Lori Foster, Sarah McCarthy, Shiloh Walker and Madeline Hunter.

My favourite genres are contemporary and historicals (medieval or regency) of the more erotic style. I do love reading about vampires and werewolvs but my favourite author for that was Laurell K. Hamilton and, well, after her books went over the deep end (so to speak) no other series has grabbed me.

Amarante-Have you tried any of Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter books? They are my fave paranormal romances.

She also writes under the pen name Kinley MacGregor which you might be more familiar with. The books she writes as MacGregor are more historical fiction types of stories.

Hey, I'm a new member too! Thrilling, I know. I'm a student, history and Russian double major, hopefully going to law school sometime soon. My favorite genre is definitely historical romance-- contemporary tends to be more intrigue-focused and less pure romance, and I just enjoy the escapism that history offers.

My favorite authors are Julia Quinn (especially Minx, my first romance and one with a special place in my heart), Stephanie Laurens, Catherine Coulter (though she is a little inconsistent as far as quality goes), Christina Dodd, Gaelen Foley, and some old-school Johanna Lindsey (whenever I feel like a good Viking bondage scene).

I'd love to hear any of your recommendations; I'm dying to try out some new authors (no offense to Lady Danbury, the Governess Brides, or the Cynster clan).

Hey, Ling! I am definitely not shy about recommending. I hope you will take a look at the other threads, our favorites are mentioned throughout.

As far as Regency romance, must-read authors for me, in addition to Dodd and Foley, are Sabrina Jeffries, Celeste Bradley, Jo Beverley, Cathy Maxwell, Diane Perkins, a/k/a Diane Gaston, Miranda Jarrett, Mary Balogh, Gail Ranstrom, Cheryl Holt, Nicole Jordan, Susan Johnson, Madeline Hunter, Patricia Grasso, Kathleen Harrington, and Lisa Kleypas, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head!

Hello, I am the newest member. (just joined today)

I am about to go on to utah and school there. I love books(obviously) and art and movies and Hugh Jackman. (definitely LOVE Hugh.) I just saw The Prestige with Hugh in it and now I have to find the book because it was just wonderful. (I've heard that the movie was actually better than the book but we all know how hard that it to do.)

I am a foremost fan of Romances. Any type though I love Historical and Paranormal the best. Regency and Medieval seem to be the times I like best for though I will take it all lol. I love Diana Gabaldon, J.K. Rowling, Julia Quinn, Christine Feehan, Karen Marie Moning, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Gaelen Foley, Brenda Joyce, Sabrina Jeffries, Kinley MacGregor (yes I know Kinley and Sherrilyn are the same person but I like one more than the other...lol), Suzanne Enoch, Nicole Jordan, Jude Deveraux, etc. (way to many to name)

I have been on LibraryThing.com since August when the lady at the local used bookstore gave me the site name. I love it and go on almost every day to update my library info.

I also enjoy seeing what others have in there lists. CC - I added you to my watch list a few months ago because of the many books we had in common. It is nice to chat with you now.

I will definitely be reading the posts and posting myself. Since I am new, I don't know all the rules, only general, so if I do something wrong just let me know and I won't do it again. :)

Love Always - Jessa

Hi--another new member.

I'm a 73-yr-old woman. I've got more books than space, although I don't have them all cataloged here. I live in Dallas, TX, with my dear husband (isn't there a shortcut for that?) and within a 5-10 minute drive of our one and only child. I grew up in central New York state, went on to a liberal arts college for women, moved to NYC (lived there for a total of 20 years), acquired degrees, and didn't work outside the home; almost 30 years ago we moved to Texas--a big upheaval (for the gardening, especially) All of us have gained a lot from being here: my husband's job, my daughter's socialization, my friendships.
My interests are varied, from genre fiction (except Westerns) to science, politics, sociology, education, religion (not for practicing). Probably some others. I'm opinionated, but I try very hard to keep it under control. A liberal in politics, I'm a reactionary in grammar and usage (furthermore, I have the wacky idea that--even on line--everybody is eager to have me set them right on the difference between its and it's and so on).
In a sense my first romances were Little Women, Eight Cousins, and An Old-Fashioned Girl, by Louisa May Alcott, which I read and reread as a girl. I went on to Elswyth Thane and Angela Thirkell--and the beloved Jane Austen. Norah Loft was a temporary favorite--and I still reread Madselyn (spelling?) the Tale of Maud Reede. I no longer remember how I stumbled on Georgette Heyer; the first book I read was Venetia.
NOW my favorite authors are still Heyer, plus Mary Balogh, Jo Beverley, Carla Kelly, Linda Howard, Emma Holly, Jayne Ann Krentz, Jennifer Crusie, Rachel Gibson, S.E.Phillips. Roberta Gellis, Liz Carlyle, Elizabeth Cadell, Catherine Gaskin, Jane Feather (sometimes), D. E. Stevenson,Judy Cuevas who also writes as Judith Ivory, Claudia Dain and sometimes Christina Dodd, Lori Foster, Suzanne Brockmann, Susan Andersen, Susan Johnson, Eloisa James, Iris Johansen, Madeline Hunter, Lisa Kleypas. I wouldn't miss a new Stephanie Laurens. More old books: Elsie Lee and some of Sheila Bishop. Mostly I avoid the vampire section, but I find the Meredith Gentry series by Laurel K. Hamilton
Enuf !!

Hi Sackler, re: I'm a reactionary in grammar and usage (furthermore, I have the wacky idea that--even on line--everybody is eager to have me set them right on the difference between its and it's and so on).

Have you read Eats, Shoots and Leaves? I loved it. Bad grammer and bad spelling are two of my pet peeves. I've been known to aggravate many a friend over issues of spelling...!

Welcome to the club, Sackler! I'm in my 50s and just read my FIRST (believe it or not) Georgette Heyer ~ "Toll House" (which doesn't even have a Touchstone, imagine that!). It was written in 1953, and I got it from the library because I'm going to (well, trying to) do the NaNoWriMo challenge, and my novel is based in part on The Highwayman poem by Alfred Noyes. Anyway, for a rather dated romance, "Toll House" was pretty good! I don't know as it would do well in today's market, because it was less sexy romantic than it was mystery with a sweet romance, and the vernacular she used was difficult to get through, but I liked it.

(Urgh, sorry about all the edits, but the Highwayman touchstone won't work for me. Keeps giving me the sci-fi novel by Martin. I had to take it off and use Noyes instead.)

Storeetllr, did you by any chance mean The Toll Gate?
It's been over 40 years since since I discovered Heyer and I still reread her books from time to time.

Brockmann is great. Gotta love her SEALS.

Sackler, Krentz is also a long time favorite of mine.

Erk! Yes, I do mean The Toll Gate. Thanks for the correction, Haile! (That is what NaNoWriMo does to one's brain, or what little is left of it if the brain in reference is mine, even if one isn't doing as much writing as one should for one reason and another.) ;D

Hey ya'll! I'm new too! I've only been on Library Thing for a few days and was invited by Julia Kranz. Thanks Julia! I'm an ER nurse and love romance of any kind. My favorites are close to the trend here: Jo Beverly, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Johanna Lindsey, Heyer, Austin, Judith McNaught, Nora Roberts, Isolde Martyn and so on. I'm fairly new to romance but have become avid in my reading. I may have read a Sweet Valley High when I was younger but I credit a friend who told me, "You HAVE to read Christine Feehan." So the first romance I read was the paranormal Lair of the Lion and since then when it comes to romance: *slurp*! Please feel free to give advice on what to check out.

Nov 12, 2006, 6:36 pm

Very punny indeed! The whole thing went sailing over my head--including the difference between Tollhouse and Toll Gate!
Toll Gate is one of my medium-favorite Heyer's--I divide my Heyer's into most-favorite, medium-favorite, less-favorite, and maybe-I'll-get-back-to-this-someday. I don't reread as often as I used to; I'm saving up for some old-and-ill day when I REALLY need them.
Storee--"scones and devon cream"--oh slurp, slurp, slurp! As for market-ability today, I don't know. I myself think her heroes are sexy, even if they don't act on it (if you keep reading, you'll see a lot of strong thighs!--sure, it's a sign that they ride horses, but surely not only horses!!). On the other hand, I grew up on Forever Amber which I call ladies' porn, since the asterisks replace the imagined sexy sections (is that a sentence that makes sense??). ANYWAY, Heyer's books are the very foundation of Regency romance, so I suspect that they'll keep on selling even without major sex scenes.
Hailelib--I like Krentz in most of her incarnations, especially as Amanda Quick, although lately (after the alphabetical ones) I'm a little less enthusiastic.
As for Brockmann's SEALS--well, I really enjoy the lighter ones, but sometimes the darker ones (beginning with, I think, Unsung Hero or Defiant Hero) are heavier than I like--although that whole series is picking up now that they aren't working for the gu'ment. But that's all picky-picky--I read 'em all as soon as I can find them!

Hi, Sackler ~ Come by for some hot tea and scones with devon cream and fresh strawberries ~ I've got lots left! In fact, all you all come by. We can have a lovely tea party, slurping up tea and eating scones and discussing books to our hearts content in a room with scented candles on the mantle and a pleasant blaze in the fireplace! Oh, wait ~ we do that book discussing bit already right here. Well, I wish we all lived near each other so we could get together in person sometime. I just love parties!

I too was less-than-thrilled with Amanda Quick's Wait Until Midnight series (the one with the detective duo), but her latest one (I think it was Second Sight) was better, though not as addictive as her earlier alphabetical ones. At least IMHO. :)

As a matter of fact I have read the entire collection from Feehan with the exception of Dark Celebration which is awaiting my attention on my shelf. I love the series. I know some readers complain that that if you read one, the others follow the same formula. I guess I like the formula because I have Christine's book on autobuy. Has anyone read her "Game" series? Mind Game, Shadow Game and so on? I like them, maybe some of you will want to check them out. The first one was okay but they have gotten better as the series progresses.

Demon, have you read Dark Celebration yet? Did you like it?

Jbooklover, I have wanted to read Diana Gabaldon because I always hear great things about her writing. I've just avoided her because the sheer volume of each book. I guess I'm going to have to take the plunge and find out for myself what the rage is about.

34Jenson_AKA_DL
Nov 13, 2006, 11:49 am

I read Dark Celebration a couple weeks ago. I really did like it, I was curious to see how she worked in re-visiting all the different Carpathians from the series. I think the way she did it worked well. I don't want to spoil it but I will say that a suspicion I had from way back when I read Dark Legend was confirmed which was kind of neat.

I'd love to discuss it further when you've had a chance to read it :-)

35JBookLover
Nov 13, 2006, 12:30 pm

romancelover - The size can be danting but well worth it and it actually did not take long to read the first one. I finished the first three each in about a week. The fourth a fifth took a little longer because I did not spend as much time reading and I started the sixth a few months ago and pick it up from time to time to continue it. I kind of don't want to finish the last one because once I do I will have to wait so long for the next so I figure if I take my time finishing it there won't be so much time between when I finish it and when I get the next book. They are amazing though because so much happens in the books so they don't drag.

I can't wait to read all the dark books so that I can get to Dark Celebration It sounds great. I am going to start Dark Challenge in a few days after I finish The Shadow Within. I don't really have a TBR list. Just a huge windowsile where all my unread books sit. So I guess it is my TBR pile. I think I need to take picks of it. It now blocks out most of the light coming from outside. Guess its better than a curtain...lol.

38cjlib
Nov 19, 2006, 3:02 pm

This is terrible but I have a vague recolletion to that book. I really need to pull some my books out of the boxes. But I kinda remember thinking the same thing with her reaction to the wolf. I think Feehan will hold off on their story (skyler/dimirti) because of her age and go to Manolito. He seemed more desperate. I could be wrong, I haven't checked her site in a while.

I unfortunately found I didn't luurve them as much as I have some other paranormal romance series so I've only read a couple other of her stories.

Hello newbies! :-)

There is a book called Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon which features a lady named Bride who is not a twiggy heroine. However, it is a paranormal romance. If you don't mind reading those kind of romances I would highly recommend it!!

58rianoel
Dec 23, 2006, 2:53 pm

I love Night Play! It's my favorite of that series by Kenyon...other than that one I like her older works---Paradise City and Born of the Night.

Somehow I managed to miss this thread. The perils of typing late at night. Right now it's only 7:42pm, so some of my wits are still about me.

I discovered librarything last week. I'm a 26 yr old living in Britain. My husband is in the military and we live in a small farming community. I have an english degree, but sadly, they have no use for American English language technical writers. I am burnt out on retail work, and thus, no job.

I spend this alone time gleefully walking the dog, cooking, and reading as much as possible.

I started off on science fiction and fantasy, and discovered the romance novel in high school. I still like all three genres, as well as the occasional mystery or horror novel.

Pride and Prejudice is my favorite romance. Austin is a genius.

I'm soon to be 2..(editted...im soon to be 21!!!!!) years old and I'm working on an associate's degree in environmental science. I loved reading sinec I was a kid... And the first romance novels my mother would ever allow me to read wee the Harlequins and Silhouettes. So I have kind of cut my teeth on those and still have a large collection. My favorite author is Sherrilyn Kenyon no doubt.. and my favorite of her books is Sieze The Night. I am alf in love with Valerius myself.. lucky Tabitha. I love the story, but I love all of her books. They are a reat read if you haven't tried them.
Happy New Year!

I am not a new member, but I am a new poster, so I guess I should introduce myself.

I'm 20 years old and I graduated last year with a degree in Political Science. I am still "trying to decide what to do with the rest of my life."

I work part-time for my dad and spend the rest reading or traveling.

I have been to London, Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Granada, Bilbao, Bangkok, Seoul, Dakar, and Cairo, to name a few places, and will be traveling to Thailand for the third time in about 2 weeks!

I am from the Northwest. CC, I noticed in a post somewhere that you have never made it to this part of the country, but hope to next summer. You should, it is beautiful. Especially in the summer, because we get a lot of rain during the rest of the year. But that is what keeps us green and beautiful.

On to reading. I read most anything, but I like the escape of romance.

I also read simultaneously, having several books going at once. I am finishing a short book on the philosophy of history by an English historian, Edward Hallett Carr, in between trying to finish Dave Eggers' latest, and working my way through my romance tbr pile.

I mostly read historical, usually regency-era or at least late 1700s -1800s. Some of my preferred historical authors are Lisa Kleypas, Mary Balogh, Sabrina Jeffries, early Susan Johnson, Julie Garwood, and Gaelen Foley. I don't have anything against medieval, or Cromwell-era, but the good ones are few and far between for me.

I also have a contemporary side, liking Nora Roberts, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, early Jayne Ann Krentz and Linda Howard.

Some authors I have loved in the past but have since given up on or almost given up on include Catherine Coulter, most of the recent work by Stephanie Laurens, Jane Feather, Amanda Quick (too formulaic), and Johanna Lindsey. Don't hate me.

I am also ready to give up on Eloisa James. Her pacing is too slow for me.

Well, I suppose that is long enough. I will probably be joining in discussion much more in the future.

Re: "Some authors I have loved in the past but have since given up on or almost given up on include Catherine Coulter, most of the recent work by Stephanie Laurens, Jane Feather, Amanda Quick (too formulaic), and Johanna Lindsey. Don't hate me."

Not a chance of that! We all have our favorites and our not-so-favorites, and they are often not the same. One thing I really like about LT and this group in particular is that everyone is so willing to offer wonderful suggestions but seldom makes one feel stupid for liking/not-liking something they themselves adores/hates. :)

Well said, Storee. I wanted this group to be a fun place we could hang out and be comfortable. The romance genre gets a bad rap, but I personally think we are doing our part to correct that!

I believe this group is so popular because we encourage discussion and we also laugh a lot. I do, anyway, and I love hearing all of your reviews and recommendations.

Hi. My name is Janis and I joined a couple of weeks ago, but have just been lurking and reading some of the posts. I joined LT in late September and finished loading my collection of 2955 books towards the end of December. They are all over my house and part of my time was spent taking them up and down the stairs or in and out of the garage. But it is such a relief to finally have a handle on my book collection -- I am famous for buying books that I already have! In 2006 I read 262 books so it's easy to forget what one has read.

In terms of my favorites in the Romance genre: Contemporary Romance and Romantic Suspense are about 95% of what I read. The other 5% is made up of an occasional time-travel, paranormal or Western historical. I simply cannot abide stories about werewolfs, vampires or other unnatural beings; I just don't get the attraction. But that's why there are so many elements to Romance -- there are so many different tastes and points of view -- lucky for us.

I have 40-50 favorite authors and have been very privileged to have met most of them at RWA meetings and through the two Authors at Sea cruises that I was able to go on. But to list my most prominent favorites (e.g., those authors that I don't even read the back cover to find out what the book is about, I just buy it) are: Linda Howard, Jayne Ann Krentz, Rachel Gibson, Cindy Gerard, Mariah Stewart, Christiane Heggan, Sharon Sala, Jill Shalvis, Kathryn Shay, Beverly Barton, Elizabeth Bevarly, Marcia Evanick, Lisa Jackson, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Nancy Warren, Maggie Shayne -- and there's lots more. Then, of course, the lady that started it all, the most wonderful Jane Austen.

A few of my favorite books (that deserve more than one read): Pride and Prejudice, Persuasian, Mr. Perfect, Open Season, Dream Man, Duncan's Wife, Sara's Child, It Must Be Love, Snowfall, The Justice Way, The Bodyguard Series, The Protector Series, Chicago Bears Series and the Misty Harbor stories.

I love to read and I love to read romances. There is simply nothing like a nice happy ending; real life holds few of them, so it's nice to settle back and enjoy a good story with a glass of wine and a warm blankie. I'm a writer, a member of RWA and the Jane Austen Society. I recently retired and travel extensively, read extensively and work on a myriad of hobbies in my spare time.

It's nice to hang out online with other folks who like Romances too.

Greetings! Totally psyched to see so many familiar author names!! I think I've purchased everything that Julia Quinn has written and I actually won her site raffle one month! I have a book cover that she inscribed to me---somewhere.

I also enjoy Julie Garwood, Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Johanna Lindsey, and a number of others. I also love the Regency Romances that I can read 2 in a day.

Hmm..about me. I'm a 24 year old librarian in Chicago. I love Siamese cats, hedgehogs and elephants (though I own none of them). Romance novels are my television--I don't watch TV often but I love movies.

And I knit...a lot. I'm thinking about getting a subscription to Audible.com so i can listen to Julia's books on tape while I knit.

Lorsomething: Janis here again. Nope, I'm not published . . . yet. Although I've got a book working on my hard drive and I wrote some Fractured Fairy Tales for gifts for some of my family this year -- very tacky and very funny adult humor. The family loved them -- of course, they had been drinking . . .

PhireAngel: I LOVE books on tape and have loads of them so that when I want to read and work on one of my hobbies - I can do both. I'm not even hooked up to TV, just own DVDs, so books on tape are great when doing something with your hands. Also fun when driving.

My recommendations: don't ever buy an abridged version - (like yuk!) and one of the best readers that I've ever listened to is Richard Ferrone who records for Recorded Books http://www.recordedbooks.com - he is really a great reader, lots of nuance, does some romance and lots of John Sandford Prey books.

Welcome Janis - we have very similar tastes in authors & genres. I, too, do not care for the vampire, etc. books & love mostly romantic suspense. Linda Howard is at the top of my list of authors, also. Way cool that you've met so many.

I have had the pleasure of being to booksignings of Nora Roberts - fascinating to listen to; Suzanne Brockmmann - extremely nice & down to earth; and Janet Evanovich & her daughter Alex - very funny & fun to listen to as well as her daughter.

I think meeting the authors brings a whole new light to reading their books.

Devil in Winter ~ to everyone who so strongly recommended this Kleypas romance: THANK YOU!

It was just wonderful! I started it last night at dinner, and couldn't put it down. Stayed awake until 1 p.m. and then finished it this morning on the trainride into work. I think Sebastian spoiled me for any other hero, and I really liked Evie too. Can't wait now to read the first 2 and the last one. (Though I know Winter is the 3d in the series, I don't think it will matter that I read it out of order.)

Stor, I'm so glad you loved it, too! Isn't it just THE perfect romance novel? I'll never forget Sebastian's "drowning" line.

Have you have read or are planning to read my other recommendation, Magnolia Creek by Jill Marie Landis? It's another exquisite piece of writing you won't want to miss.

CC - There is a difference between paranormal and futuristic (or sci-fi) romances. Susan Grant writes futuristics, not paranormals.

Susan Grant also collaborated on a sci-fi series with Kathleen Nance, Liz Maverick, and Patti O'Shea - what I call the "2176" series.

It is set in Earth's future in the year 2176 (duh!). Each book can be read alone, but refers to characters in the other books. I especially enjoyed Day of Fire which is located in Canada, my home country.

Another collaborative series set in Earth's future is the "Crimson City" series with novels by Liz Maverick, Patti O'Shea, Jade Lee, and Carolyn Jewel.

Also the content of the thread on paranormal romance is a little misleading because it is dominated by vampire books. Paranormal also includes magic, telepathy, ghosts, etc. And futuristic can also be paranormal as well as sf. So I put the two groups together on my physical shelves.

Anyway, looking forward to reading the posts in this group!

Hello! My name is PigsnieLite but you can call me PLite or Archie. Yep, Im a 16 yr old British boy and I am wearing a Zorro mask as I am typing this becuz I dont want my friends to know, hee.

I started reading romances becuz of my mum basically. She loves Regency romances but doesnt like bookstores, so I volunteered to go buy her stuff for her. Well, eventually, the bookstores ran out of Georgette Heyers (becuz she's dead, ma!) and I haf had to scurry about in dark corners, perusing the heaving contents & vetting for steamy sex scenes (NO! Mum doesnt like!) and fresh fruit getting into the strangest places. (Oh dear! I wonder that they dont use turkey legs!) So I am here to get ideas on whut to buy next for my ma, and becuz I rather like reading some of these things after a long day of perusing more manly stuff like truck drivers manuals, hahaha!

So heres some of the authors that are acceptable to my mum and that I like also:

Georgette Heyer. Whut a shame that shes dead already! I would haf liked a sequel to DEVILS CUB & seen whut sort of grandkids Avon & Leonie would have had.
Katherine Mansfield. Carla Kelly. Candice Hern. Edith Layton. Barbara Metzger. Sandra Heath. Joan Wolf.

Umm, thats all I can remember at the moment. Oh, I do like those Christmus omnibuses of Regency Christmus short stories. Those are super quick reads I can polish off in a day or two. I recently discovered the Shopoholic books and while my mum doesnt care for contemporary stuff, I did find the heroines spending habits hilarious.

I do read other stuff (you can check out my library -- those are only the books I could remember off the top of my head) but my special favourites are the super fat historical novels, like those written by James Clavell or the Coleen McCullough Caesar series.

Cheers!

PLite

I'm brand new to the group and thought I'd introduce myself. I'd always avoided typical "romance" novels, though I'd always loved books by Janet Evanovich, who's sometimes considered romance. And I've been a fan of the chick lit genre for years. I started reading the Christina Skye Code Name books a few years back, and liked them, but again, didn't venture further into the genre.

That is, until a co-worker started handing me books by Lisa Kleypas. I LOVE her Wallflowers series. And I started branching out from there. On a whim, I picked up A Soldier's Christmas this November, and so right now, I'm plowing through the Catherine Mann Wingmen Warriors series. I've also discovered Emma Holly, and I love her Beyond books. I've read quite a few of her works, and I like the historicals better, I think, and I've got two of her demon books on my shelf waiting to be read.

I don't have a lot of time to read anymore. I miss my days in college, working for my English degree. Now I'm a few months from my law degree, and while there's still a lot of reading, it's just not the same kind of reading.

PLite and Piper ~ welcome!

PLite, it's always nice to know when a man is interested in romances. I've only read two of the romance authors you mentioned: Heyer and Joan Wolf, but I loved McCullough's Rome series!

Piper, congratulations on getting close to finishing law school. If you're getting any fun reading done at all, you're doing good!

I love Kleypas too, and am just now reading the Wallflower series. I tend to get on genre kicks, and for the past couple of years was mainly into paranormals and contemporary romances (like Evanovich, Lori Foster, etc.). Now I'm back on historicals. Have you read any of Sabrina Jeffries? Also good is Madeline Hunter, whom I was turned onto by LTers in this group. I haven't read any Emma Holly yet, though it's only a matter of time.

Jan 27, 2007, 10:43 pm

Hi, I'm glad for all the recommendations. I'm mostly hooked on regencies so:

Georgette Heyer !!
Barbara Metzger writes funny books.
Mary Balogh
Jo Beverley
Allison Lane
Carla Kelly
Stephanie Laurens when there is more plot than sex. I really liked the first Cynster. I've read all the Cynsters and all the Bastion Club so far. I really enjoyed the earlier Four in Hand. I think that is the title.
Amanda Quick but Jayne says she is not going to write any more regencies, but will move more into the Victorian age. I have to agree that I like the earlier stuff better, but I have just started listening to the new one White Lies and so far, so good.
Marion Chesney also writes a fun romp.
I've recently discovered Julia Quinn and Elizabeth Boyle and have enjoyed their books.
Christina Dodd - My favorites are the two where the heroines switched places, Scandalous Again and One Kiss from You, but there are probably more. The governess brides too.
I've also read some Lisa Kleypas and Johanna Lindsey that I like too.
Nancy Butler - Prospero's Daughter and The Rake's Retreat
Susan Carroll - The Bride Finder, Sugar Rose, The Brighton Road

Contemporary:
Nora Roberts writes great people.
Christine Feehan when there is more plot than sex. I see there are recommendations for the dark series, but I also recommend the Game series and the seven sisters series.
Jayne Ann Krentz

Good grief! This is hard. There are a lot of really good books. And some stinkers. There have been some I couldn't finish or that took me months and a lot of other books in between. But that is another thread...

My favorite romances have always been historicals - I'll read them set just about anywhere at any time, but I love the ones set in England the most. I haven't read much romance lately, but lurking in this group has made me want to go back to it and at least discuss what I have read. My absolute favorite author is Gaelen Foley, but I haven't read His Wicked Kiss or her latest novel. Her Ascension trilogy basically got me into romance. Other favorites: Stephanie Laurens, Nora Roberts, Teresa Medeiros, Christina Dodd and Judith McNaught. My absolute favorite romance novel is Prince Charming by Gaelen Foley.

Hey, Little, welcome!

BL79, After the Night was a hard one to read for me, but I'd say it's one of my favorite Linda Howard books. Gray was a real SOB toward Faith in the flashbacks. The scene where he threw her and her baby brother out in the cold at night in her nightgown was hard to read. I thought his behavior towards her was despicable and unredeemable. If I remember correctly, her baby brother's death was a direct result of his actions.

So far my all time favorite books are the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and The Bronze Horseman (and it's sequel) by Paullina Simons.

I also have to mention The Pillars of the Earth and Swan Song (which isn't really romantic or historical, but it's fantastic).

My most recent favorite is the Here Be Dragons trilogy by Sharon Kay Penman.

And at the moment I am in the middle of The Time Traveler's Wife which i think might be added to my all time favorite list!

Some other authors that I love are Judith McNaught and Marsha Canham. Canhams Scottish trilogy that begins with The Pride of Lions is a must read!

Welcome to the group, Amanda! I have heard that The Pillars of the Earth is a good book - and a romance, even though I always thought Ken Follett was more of a general fiction writer. Is the romance the focus of the book, or a side storyline?

hi Katybear, i read Pillars a few years ago (almost time to read it again) so it's a little fuzzy. The book is so complex, i believe there are 3 main characters and it spans i think around 40 years. There is everything in this book; love, sex, betrayal, history, action, it has it all. I think there were actually a couple romantic storylines. It was a great book!

Hi all, I am not really a new member as I have been posting off and on for several months now. I have never really introduced myself. I am a recently retired public librarian and love historical romance in both print and audio format. I found lots of romance fans at the library and enjoyed talking with them about the different authors. I miss that in retirement but find this helps fill that bill.

I love reading what everyone is reading and have received some good suggestions for authors I hadn't read before. I subscribe to Romantic Times Book Reveiw magazine so I can keep up with the new stuff coming out.

I read those two books when they first came out and loved them! They are both wonderful books and she's a terrific author. Sadly, I haven't read any of her books in over 10 years. Does Ms Woodwiss still author romance novels?

Recently I dismantel my collection of romance, cause my home, very little, couldn't contain all my books and now I have "only" 2000 books more or less, most in italian. Step by step I will upload my titles in LT and also my italian covers... if you notice a suddenly blooming of italian covers, I'm guilty! ciao, elisa

Hey Everyone, I'm Bridget, I'm 20 and I'm going to Boot Camp for the United States Navy on May 9th. My Navy Job is AO, (Aviation Ordnance) working with Weapons and Explosives on Naval Aircraft.
I've lost 50 lbs this year, going from 185ish lbs to 135 lbs and I'm still losing weight. :)
I love Romance Supsense, Conteporary Romance, Historical Romance, and Some Paranormal Romance though they do take me longer to get into.
I've read over 90 books this year and I hope to read 300.
I don't feel like listing favorites alot now so I'll just stick with books Naked in Death by J.D. Robb, Say You Love Me by Johanna Lindsey, Tempting the Devil by Patricia Potter, and November of my Heart by LaVryle Spencer.

Hi everyone. I've been a member for a little while now, but mostly lurking. Thought it was time to come out and say hi.

I'm Jennifer and a relatively new romance reader. Up until 5 years ago, I woulnd't even pick one up. Now it's about all I read. Some favorite authors include Brenda Joyce, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Stephanie Laurens, Linda Lael Miller (who I met this past weekend) and Katie MacAlister.

Let's see...what else can I tel y'all about me. I'm a couple credits shy of earning my Master's in Library Science. I work for an energy trading company and in my spare time, I edit romances for an e-publisher.

I'm currently reading a mystery (High Heels are Murder by Elaine Viets) and listening to Dark Side of the Moon by Sherrilyn Kenyon during my commute.

I'm looking forward to participating in this group more. :)

Hi
I am a retired RN-certified in Psychiatric nursing. Have 2 grown daughters and one grandson age 12 ~who is my shining star~.
I own a zillion books of all kinds (romance, history, antiques, and subjects too many to list).
I belong to PaperBackSwap and also post on the All About Romance {AAR} site.
My old time fav authors were Elsie Lee, an english author named Elizabeth Cadell, Georgette Heyer, Paula Allardyce, Joan Smith her regencies. Then I moved on to Medievals like Madeline Hunter, now I am reading Linda Howard, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Sandra Brown, Shannon McKenna, J.R. Ward (but I am getting tired of vampires).
This looks like a very good, friendly site. I read about it on AAR.

My main love are the paranormals (haven't reached my vampire quota yet LOL) but since being here I've expanded my interests to some historical (Lisa Kleypas) and contemporary (Lori Foster).

Hi, all...I'm new to the group. I've lurked around a little bit, and was helped by some of your posts pertaining to books that I'm interested in. I don't have any friends who read romances, so it's great that there are so many of us who love it and make up this community.

I've worked many years in the cosmetic and fragrance industry as an Executive Secretary, and later as a Personal Assistant. I'm currently on a 2-year sabbatical from work. So I've been catching up on my reading like crazy.

The categories that I enjoy reading the most are the medievals and gothics. I've been stockpiling on gothics recently - Mary Stewart in particular, and newer authors such as Diane Tyrrel and Jennifer St Giles.

I've also tried JR Ward and liked her 4 books.

I'm keeping an open mind and I look forward to more good reads.

Hi everyone,
I am so glad I found this group. I thought I was weird reading only romance novels as my friends are not into romance and prefer more crime and suspense books.
But once I found this group, I realize I just needed to meet more people like you guys.
Ok I'v been on LT for some time now but have only got to this put up this post.
My favourite authors are, christine feehan, sherrilyn kenyon, JR ward, stephanie laurens, julia quinn, johanna lindsey, julie garwood and many more.( I cant name them).
I love vampire romance and am a sucker for such books. I have also got into historical novels and among them all, I just love Julie garwood because of the humour. 'The bride' was just hilarious that I could not stop laughing.... This LT is great as you guys offer so much of reviews that I am finding it hard to keep up..

ok about me, I am 26, live in Australia and luv reading romance novels. I feel these novels give me a break from all my stress (I work in the IT industry) and I go off into another world with my H/H's and have fun.

Long time listener, first time caller.

I've been reading romance novels since I started filching them of my great-grandma's book shelf in the fifth grade. Johanna Lindsey's Hearts Aflame was the first romance I ever read and she is still one of my favorites.

Romance novels are my dirty little secret. I work at a high-falutin' University where my friends and co-workers all read Nietzsche for fun. Romance is my escapist literature and I'll insist that it is no different than the sci-fi/fantasy or mystery paperback genres. It just happens to be written by woman (mostly) for women (mostly) so it gets a bum rap.

I feel like I've defended romance novels so much over the years I could write a master's thesis on the subject.

163LoriTori
Aug 31, 2007, 12:03 am

Been around, but never introduced myself.

I started reading romances mostly Harlequin and Silhouettes when I was a teenager. My Mom got me hooked and she used to trade bags of books with my Aunts on a regular basis and I thought that getting a new bag was better than Christmas!

I currently work for a large software company in the Pacific Northwest. (hmmm...I wonder what company that could be! :) I had "given up" reading romances for awhile as my partner and I adopted two little guys (one from VietNam and one from Kazakhstan) now I am back to reading my romances as they do not need the constant hovering of two Moms!

My favorite authors are Laurel K. Hamilton, Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor, Nora Roberts, Diana Gabaldon, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Some authors that I am just getting to know due to some great reviews from this group are Lisa Kleypas and Suzanne Enoch.

Due to my frugal ways, I will hardly buy a book by a new author until I have had a chance to read a book by them. So I am addict to placing holds on books at our local library so that I can "try before I buy". I have to admit to needing someone to hold my debit card when I go to Half-Price Books though! In my mind, all the books are on sale there! Not to mention that our local library sells used books for $3 and below just as you walk in the door. My version of Heaven!

I love this group and all of the great suggestions! Thank you!

About me: I'm in my early twenties and I'm pursuing a postgraduate degree at university. I'll admit I'm not terribly adventurous in my reading habits, I like fairly straightforward romance, although I like some well written supernatural novels.

Hello - I guess I should introduce myself, having been lurking here for a while.

My first introduction to romance was aged 8: finding a Heyer when staying with friends of my parents. Sadly, I can't recall which it was, but there is not a Heyer I don't like. I've just reread Venetia, which I think is her best - assured, intelligent writing.

My next favourite after GH is definitely Linda Howard - another writer whose characters and plots are always believable. It surprises me how many people don't like To Die For and Drop Dead Gorgeous. To me, they are superb tongue-in-cheek 'fun' books, with a delightful style.

Oh, and I'd like to thank you all for increasing my wishlist into the hundreds :)

I love to read anything romantical, I think my passion started when i first got a library card at the age of 14 and hired out a Mills and Boon, well i have to say i was hooked. I then think i was overcome with a bit of OCD as i used to have a little book where i would write all the titles i had read and the main 2 characters names.

I stopped doing that but still obsessed over my books so when i found this web site i was thrilled, especially to find so many likeminded people to chat with.

My fave authors these days are;

Lisa Kleypas
Mary Balogh
Julia London
Emma Holly

Since I haven't posted in...er...about 4? 5? months (mostly due to illness & long-distance visits with family members) I figured I'd re-introduce myself!

I am an avid reader of romance, science fiction and fantasy. My favorite genre is urban fantasy. Most recently I've been addicted to the Jaz Parks series written by Jennifer Rardin.

My all-time favorite author is Jane Austin. I am a big fan of P&P. Yes, I know...it has nothing to do with urban fantasy, but there you have it.

I have a HUGE TBR stack. It now tops 300+. Argh. I made myself a new goal: read as many books a month as I actually purchase new. Currently I am 4 behind for the month of January.

My most recently finished novel was Naughty by Nature by Barbara Pierce, which I thought was good, even if the plot wasn't quite up to her usual standard.

Hope you are feeling better now! I know how it is to get over an illness that lasts that long. I had mononucleosis in the past and it took me a while to recover fully (what was really horrible is that there aren't many noticeable symptoms, to other people you don't "look" sick, but you feel so exhausted with no appetite).

Some of my favorite romance authors are Linda Howard, Jayne Ann Krentz, Jennifer Cruisie, Nora Roberts (on and off) and just recently Deanna Raybourn. I've read many other authors, but these are the ones whose books I actively look for. I've read most of Amanda Quick (I know, she's the same as . . I forget who!) but hers seem to be very formulaic, just change the names and occupations and the story is the same. I've only read one Heather Graham and I did enjoy it. I'm always looking for recommendations! I like some historical romance and some contemporary. And I always enjoy a good mystery or something humorous.

I have just joined LibraryThing in the last couple of weeks. I am still finding my way around the site.

About me:
My name is Wendy. I live in NZ where I am a children's librarian in a public library. I have been married for 23 years (to the same man!) and I have 3 grown children (19, 20 & 21).
I have loved reading all my life. I was the only reader in my family growing up, so used to have to sneak read. Started off with Laura Ingalls, progressed to Nancy Drew, then in my teens read Louis L'Amour books by the dozen. When I hit 15, I was at a motorcamp with nothing to read and found a mills and boon. I have been a romance fan ever since.
I love hist/romance esp. regencies, scottish and medieval. I also love rom/suspense as well as a bit of the paranormal (psychics not vampires). I do NOT like this new trend into the werewolf/vampire thing but thats only IMO.
I have too many favourite authors to even mention...but I love Amanda Quick, JD Robb, Sandra Brown, Julia Quinn, Julie Garwood, Victoria Alexander, Christina Dodd etc etc (well, you get the picture).
My husband is not a reader. In fact the only other reader in our family is my 20yr old daughter who has left home. Luckily my husband loves going on the Internet, watching movies etc. cos then I can read without feeling guilty. I would rather read than watch TV, movies or just about anything else. Looking forward to finding my round these posts, but also don't want to take up my reading time. Kia ora from NZ

Hi HunebeeNZ - welcome to the group!

For the record, I shared your opinion about the vampire/werewolf romance thing also... until I joined this group. I tried out Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series and found that I really enjoyed them. I haven't read any other paranormal romances yet, but I did really like those.

I guess that's one of the cool things about this group - there's such a great mix of varying interests here. You'll get introduced to authors and subgenres you've never tried before!

Hello all! I am also new to Library Thing and this group! Right now, I am totally loving the paranormal mystery/suspense, and the ones I tend to pick have a romantic twist. I DO happen to like the vampire/warewolf theme that is happening. I did not know it was a trend, I just started getting into them last year. Lucky me I guess. My favorites right now would be Heather Graham, Katie MacAlister, Carrie Vaughn, Madalyn Alt, Victoria Laurie, Terri Garey and others that I am probably forgetting! I have read Dark Side of the Moon by Sherrilyn Kenyon recently and enjoyed it enough. I am NOT a big fan of the sweeping epics, and her series seems sweeping. So I am a little on the fence if I want to go any further with it. But I did like her style. A person mentioned above a book by her with a character named Bride that sounds kind of interesting. I may give that a whirl. I first got into romance novels in my mid-teens, mostly interested in Historicals-Western US. I guess that translated later in my life to get my degree in History! A little less emphasis on the romance sadly!
I look forward to hearing and sharing thoughts on books!

Welcome to the group, irreverent!

I am primarily a historical/regency romance reader, but several people here recommended Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series and I finally tried them out and REALLY liked them. I had never read anything like that before. I would recommend reading them in order, though - starting with the "prequel" Fantasy Lover. I've noticed that while there's a common storyline/overreaching plot throughout the series, the earlier books in the series tend to focus more on the romance. The later books deal more and more with the overall story arc.

The one with Bride and Vane is Night Play. It is one of my favorites in that series. Ironically, the book you mentioned Dark Side of the Moon is probably one of my least favorites in the series!

Welcome, irreverant. Since you like the vampire theme (I've sort of fallen into it lately, too) try Lynsay Sands. Her vampire series is really great. And she has released three new books in the series. well, the last new release comes out at the end of Feb.

Hi everyone! I am a relatively new member to this group as well as Librarything in general. I am a 22 year old student from western Canada who is currently studying History. I have always read romance, but recently it seems to be all that I'm reading! I love anything before 1900, and my favourite authors recently have been Lisa Kleypas, Connie Brockway (but only her historical titles), Loretta Chase, and Lynsay Sands (but again, only her historicals.) I also loved Sylvia Day's A Passion for Him, the Prince trilogy by Elizabeth Hoyt (though the first one was definitely my favourite), and Passion by Lisa Valdez.

I'm always open to suggestions, and feel free to look through my library...

Hey there! I am new to Librarything and this is the first group I join. I am a romance reader - albeit a rookie one, I just started reading them. I must admit that I have looked down at the genre for years until I picked up my first Julia Quinn and then I was doomed. Now, I started blogging with a friend and I try to review as many romance novels as possible and spread the word!

My favorite writers are Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Loretta Chase (My goddess of writing), Jill Barnett, Julie Garwood and very recently I became obsessed with Kresley Cole's Immortal After Dark series - do we have a discussion for these books?

I've been reading romances since I was in my mid teens - half my life! I like emotional, poignant romances where either the hero or heroine have issues to work through. My favourite authors include: J R Ward, Nalini Singh, Kresley Cole (for the historical trilogy), Shannon Mckenna, Sherrilyn Kenyon/Kinley MacGregor (sometimes), Mary Jo Putney.

Hi all!

I've been on LT for a while now, and have been lurking in your group and thought I'd better stop by and introduce myself.

I'm from South Dakota, am 32 (really? how is that possible??), and am married. I have an almost three year old son and am currently 7 months pregnant. I've read romances since my teens, but really slacked off the last few years. I keep finding myself wishing for a good romance so have been lurking around here for a couple months.

I use LT to track what I have already read, as opposed to what I own, so by looking at my library you can see my tastes. It's all tagged by the year I read it, and goes in phases. My very favorite historical is The Secret and my favorite contemporary is In the Midnight Rain by Ruth Wind. I am actually re-reading ItMR now and it's holding up very well.

This is also my first attempt at Touchstones, let's see how that worked!

I blog about my life at http://bookslistslife.blogspot.com and I blog about my books at http://ratherread.wordpress.com. Stop by and say hello.

I look forward to participating more.

I look forward to checking out your blogs soon.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to LT and have lurked on a few of your discussion threads so thought I'd say hi.

Most of my friends don't read romance (or at least, don't admit they read romance), so I came to this group to find some fellow romance readers to chat with.

Been reading romances since I started ordering them in the Scholastic Book Club in 4th grade--anyone else out there remember Sabrina, Marilee, Roxanne, and those other novels where the girl had to choose between two guys?

My all-time favorite romance is probably The Secret by Julie Garwood.

But I'm rambling. . . .

Hello friendly people!

I am so happy I found LT and especially this group!
Romance books are my big thing but also my secret, almost guilty, pleasure.
I like to keep this to myself so I do not feel tortured about keeping this secret.
However, it is a lot easier now with sites like this one and AAR and all. I use them to find new good books instead of buying books blindly. I live in Sweden so before the Internet and online bookstores it was really difficult and expensive to maintain my reading habits.

Reading romance for me is a great way to relax and be entertained! So what I want to read is really over-the-top, outrageous and hot books!
I really like really politically incorrect viking-romance, hareem settings, erotica, paranormals, bodice-rippers, native americans. Historicals of any kind.
Romance with really over-the-top, larger-than-life characters, tear-jerkers, emotional roller-coasters.

Right now I am re-reading Kresley Cole and her Dark Needs at Night's Edge over and over. It helps me cope with stress. Other favorite authors of mine are Linda Howard, Helen Kirkman, Jo Beverley and many many more.

I really like putting all my romance books online so I do not buy any more books twice! (I hate it when that happens!)

Do check out my library and I would love to make friends!

Happy reading, everyone! (and sorry for the long post)

P.S. So sorry about any language mistakes! I love english, but it is my second language, so sometimes I hit and I miss!

Hallontass, welcome to the group. You will find lots of company here that enjoy the same kind of books! I used to keep my romance reading a secret too but as a librarian I decided to make my interest public and it gave patrons the ability and confidence to be more willing to ask for romance books.

Hi again!
CC>Thanks for the welcome! I really enjoy this wonderful group!

pmpayne> This group is really great! It really is wonderful to find romance taken seriously. And as a fellow librarian I have to say that swedish public libraries have a policy to only cater to more "worthy" literature. It is changing but still is slow going.

gracer> Thanks a lot! It must be all that reading! Finding good romances in Sweden is getting better although it is far from easy. Harlequin has a swedish publisher and also there are some homegrown authors from other publishers. But not all that many. Mostly the few romances that get translated are often rather poorly done and not top-notch to begin with. A few of the larger bookstores in Stockholm have a romance section in their english sections but they are not the best IMHO. However, some swedish online bookstores have a good selection and affordable prices. For OOP romance I have abebooks.co.uk. It seems the romance genre is pretty much an english language thing. And that is just fine with me! I like to maintain my english by reading romances.

That's all for now!
And thanks again from the happy romance reader!

Hi everyone!

I recently joined LibraryThing and I finally have most of my library uploaded (I still have a few regular books and all my ebooks left). I've been reading romance novels since my early teens - I started by borrowing Nora Roberts' books from my aunt! I'm excited to find a community dedicated to romance novels.

My favorite authors and genres have definitely changed over time (I no longer read Nora Roberts) Currently, I enjoy historical romances (Regency, especially) and paranormal romances. I read some contemporary, but its not my favorite. My favorite authors are: Kresley Cole (both historical and paranormal), Julia Quinn, Lisa Kleypas, Lauren Royal, and Suzanne Enoch. I just discovered Kristan Higgins and really enjoy her (yes, I know its contemporary).

I look forward to participating in the community!!

Some of my fave authors are Jane Austin, Kresley Cole, Christine Feehan, Sabrina Jeffries, Jacquie D'Alessandro, Gena Showalter, Lora Leigh, Nicole Jordon, Lisa Kleypas, Keri Arthur, Julia Quinn, C.L. Wilson, Karen Chance, Keri Arthur, Karen Hawkins and too many others to name. My favorite genres are historical and paranormal romances.

I like giving recommendations and talking about my favorite books and love it when people give me recommendations in return. So if you have any questions or if you know of any books I may like, please feel free to give me a shout out either on here or on my blog at www.lostbutnotlooking.blogspot.com.

I have been a romance reader since I can remember.

Currently I am in a Regency romance phase. I had forgotten how much I loved these books. After reading a couple of reviews I read the Art of Gentility and the Devils Bride and now I am rediscovering this great genre. I have worked my way through all of Stephanie Laurens books and currently I am reading Amanda Quick, Julia Quinn and any other books I can get my hands on. I have started to haunt my local used bookstores.

Hi everyone. I'm a 31 year old middle school teacher/graduate student. I'm working on my Master's in Library Science, and I only discovered LibraryThing a few weeks ago. I've been reading as long as I can remember, but once I got into high school I quit reading fiction for "pleasure" and read fiction only when I had to. Last semester I took a children's lit class that got me reading "chapter books" again, and this semester I am in a Young Adult lit class that has had me reading fiction (from our reading list) since June! Even though I am a middle school teacher, I have not familar with much of what is going on in the YA world of reading. The book Twilight was on my reading list, and I put off reading it until three weeks ago. Well, once I started reading it, I could not stop. I have told my friends that this series is like "book crack." I could not put any of them down! :) Once I had to actually go back and analyze the writing, I was not as impressed with Meyers, but I LOVE the story line. So, to make a long story short, I feel like I owe a nod of thanks to Stephanie Meyers for introducing me to the "sickeningly sweet" romance novel - I'm definately hooked now. Of course some of my more analytical friends say that I am spending my "post divorce" years living vicariously through teen romance books, but who cares!
Even before my discovery of Twilight, I did find myself occasionally reading a few romance books now and then. I enjoy the Christian/Amish romance books by Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter. I also like the historical romance books by Tracy Peterson. Aside from the Twilight series, I tend to gravitate to historical romances. While these are all Christian writers, I enjoy all sorts of authors. I hope to discover some new favorites on this list.
Cheers -Vickie in SC

Hi I'm new to the group. I discovered LT a couple of weeks ago and since I am addicted to romance I naturally gravitated to this group.
(It's the first group I've ever joined!) Looking over the threads I've noticed a few mentions to Nalini Singh. What can you tell me about her plots and story lines? I'm in search for new paranormal romance authors. I tried one of Christine Feehan's novels and I didn't enjoy it at all. I don't recall which one it was, I just know I couldn't get into it. I remember that the main characters were "special op" types. Not my usual brand. I know she has several series out there. If someone can recommend one of her novels to start with maybe that will nudge me in her direction.
I love Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, though I hate to say it I was disappointed with her long awaited Acheron. I'm also a fan of her LOA series under Kinley Macgregor. I enjoy some of Nora Roberts books such as her Circle and The 3 Sister's trilogies. (Can't wait for the Pagan Stone to come out, November) Love the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, too. In fact I enjoy that more then her Highlander series. Ok, I know it's pretty obvious that I was a big Buffy and Angel fan. If only I had HBO, I'd be a True Blood fan, I'm sure :)
My first love is historical romance though and any author recommendations in that genre would be wonderful, too. My historical romance library basically consist of Jude Deveraux, Johanna Lindsay (I know her story lines lack meat to them but I can't NOT read her stuff. I've been reading her novels since the very beginning with Captive Bride) , Brenda Joyce, Julie Garwood, Amanda Quick though I'm getting tired of her Arcane Society novels), Teresa Medeiros and Lisa Kleypas. Tried a Julia Quinn novel once and never picked up another. (please don't hate me)
Looking forward to sharing, discovering and rediscovering authors and novels-

I haven't read anything by Nalini Singh yet, but for Christine Feehan I'd suggest Dark Prince which is the first of her Carpathian stories. I haven't really read any of her other series but love those Carpathians!! :-)

Another author you might want to check out is Kresley Cole who writes both historical and paranormal romances and is wonderful at both.

Thanks for the Dark Prince recommendation. I'll be hitting the used book store, Saturday and looking for that and while I'm there perhaps I'll grab a Kresley Cole novel, too. Would you have a title suggestion for her?

273Jenson_AKA_DL
Sep 17, 2008, 9:49 am

The Captain of all Pleasures by Kresley Cole is a nautical/historical story and despite its title (which kind of makes me cringe), was very good.

She also has a highlander trilogy (I recently finished reading myself) that was very good, the books got steadily better as they went along. The first of the series is If you Dare.

Her paranormal series is ongoing and the first one is A Hunger Like No Other.

269> jingle, Nalini Singh's first book, Slave To Sensation is one of the best paranormal romances I've read. The plots are fairly complex, so difficult to explain. Basically, they revolve around an alternate future in which humanity has divided into three races: Psy (those with psychic ability), Changelings (shapeshifters), and humans. Humans don't play much of a part (a weakness of the series). There's always a contrast between psy (mental ability) and changeling (physical prowess), along with some political or crime intrigue.

The first book is the story of Sascha, a psy who's mother sits on the ruling Psy Council, and her struggles with her emotions, which good psy are not supposed to have nor display. This really becomes a challenge when she meets and is immediately attracted to Lucas, the leader of the local (San Francisco area) changeling leopard pack, who is brokering a deal with the Psy. Sascha gets chosen to negotiate because she can deal with those 'animals.' Romance ensues, along with the hunt for a serial killer.

It sounds like a mess, but Singh pulls it off with flair: she's got a better grip on fantasy/scifi than else anyone in the romance genre, and weaves them together seamlessly. Unfortunately, if you're looking for a series, this one gets worse as they continue (though I may be the only one who thinks so!), to the tune of 5-3-4-3-3. But then, I'm a picky reader, and don't like Feehan, either!

Sounds good. I'm going to look for that one, Saturday.
Have you read Eileen Wilks? If you haven't, I think you might enjoy her novels. Her series is the World of Lupi. The first book is Tempting Danger and it introduces Det. Lily Yu and Rule Turner. Lily is a touch sensitive. Meaning she can sense anything paranormal by touch. Rule is a werewolf prince. Together they attempt to solve a series of brutal murders, while fighting their attraction for each other.

Welcome new members! It's great to see so many fresh and diverse voices here. My own tastes are pretty well-defined (Regencies and other historicals, particularly those with a strong social comedy element ala Austen and her successors, nautical-themed romances and contemporary erotic romance) but I enjoy reading about all kinds of romance and really appreciate the variety in discussions here. Keep it up, please!

279rosamenz

277> Yes, I love Eileen Wilks - I didn't mention her, because I saw she was already on your shelf, with a lot of 3 stars - so I probably like her more than you! I think she's gone in a weird direction with the whole demon thing, but she's a great writer, so I'll keep reading her - like Singh, she's got a really strong grasp of fantasy/scifi elements - it's not just for garnish. Also like Singh, she seemingly came out of nowhere with this super strong voice in paranormal romance after a fairly undistinguished career in series romances. Have you read her shorts in Cravings and Lover Beware? Her BEST work, imo - she just seems to flow better with the shorter length. The one in Lover Beware is the - ? outline, I guess? - of the Rule/Yu series, therefore pretty redundant if you've read those. The one in Cravings is freakin fantastic - one of the best endings of any story I've read anywhere. In my life. Really. That good! Makes me smile whenever I think about it, and so beautifully sly, you have to read the whole story to get it, so no bother trying to skip ahead and read the end first! Absolutely original.

278> I'm wondering what a "nautical-themed romance" is - ? I looked at your tags but couldn't find that. Also what contemporary erotic romances you like? And whether you like Robin Schone?

280jingle_kringle
Sep 18, 2008, 8:05 am

Hmmm, nautical-themed romance? I haven't tagged any of my books, yet. Though, I have read some pirate themed novels.
I have to take a moment to say that I'm proud of myself for joining this group. It's wonderful to finally find a group of people that enjoy the same category of books that I do. Most everyone I come across look down at me for admitting my passion for historical and paranormal romance. Some days it's difficult not to reply with a snippy remark. Usually, I just say (with a tight smile and a brittle voice, I'm sure) "Until you can honestly tell me you've read a couple, you can't critique my taste in reading material". Can I ask why it's acceptable to admit you enjoy a Nicholas Sparks or James Patterson novel but not a Sabrina Jeffries novel? Oh my, I digress. I'm stepping down from my soap box now.
To answer your question, Rosa- no, I'm not familiar with Robin Schone. I have to say I haven't read any contemporary erotic romances, yet. I have a sneaking suspicion that you are about to tell me to add her to my 'try out' list.
After perusing this forum I realize that my library is sadly lacking. But with the help of you and everyone else here I think that is about to change.

I have a few romances in my nautical tag. I'm very fond of romances involving sea captains or pirates. Some of my favorites include Lady Pirate (really funny) and An Improper Proposal.

I'm planning on reviewing Lady Pirate on my blog ( www.caramellunacy.blogspot.com ) in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day and I've got a giveaway running (not romance, but piratical).

What are some of your favorites Marietherese?

Oh crap I did say that out loud, didn't I? I'm sorry, Sbrush. Please, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Ash. I waited for his story forever and maybe that was part of the problem. Keep in mind there's actually 2 parts to his story. His ancient past and his present. Be prepared his story is heart wrenching but it does tend to go on and on. I enjoyed the second half much more. In fact I stopped reading part 1 after 60 some odd pages and started the 2nd half of his story. Then I went back and finished the rest of part 1.
I'm sure you'll enjoy his story.

I'm new around here and wanted to say hi! :)

I've done a bit of reading through a few posts already about people's different tastes in sub-genres, books, and authors, it's fun seeing what others think about this genre of literature.

I'm actually quite a closet romance reader, have been reading romance themed books since I was in my early teens, but do not openly admit it. Before, I usually read what I can smuggle out of the public library without my mom looking at me funny or whatever free novel I can find online by amateur writers. Hehe, but I'm past that now :D

I'm quite open to all aspects of romance novels from science fiction to historical to contemporary and in betweens with any manner of themes. Though I haven't read much in a while, some of the authors I've ventured into are:

Janelle Taylor
Johanna Lindsey
Julia Quinn
Lisa Kleypas
Linda Howard
Nora Roberts
Sandra Brown

Along with others I don't remember and various Harlequin novels.

It'll be a pleasure to get recommendations for future books and thoughts of past books from others for once that isn't classic literature or from textbooks! Hope to read more opinions from everyone :)

Hello all,
I am new LT. I read all kinds of books but I have a secret passion for historical and paranormal romance.

Historical romance authors I like:
I am partial to the Regency period.
Stephanie Laurens (Bastion Club is my favorite series)
Julia Quinn

Paranormal authors I like:
I am partial to vampires.
J.R. Ward (Black Dagger Brotherhood)
Karen Chance (Cassandra Palmer series)
Charlaine Harris (Sookie Stackhouse novels (I love TrueBlood))

I generally only want to read the best series of the genres. I read a whole lot of a genre or author, then I get bored and move on to another genre. But I am very interested in exploring some new authors here. I am still adding books to my profile, so there is only a limited selection so far.

Can't wait to start chatting with you all.

I just joined this group - I've been on LT for quite a while, and came here primarily to post a 'looking for a book' request (I put it in Name That Book and got recommendations to post it here instead/as well).

I read a _lot_ - when I'm working and don't have time to read, I don't manage more than a book every day or two. Right now I'm reading 3-4 a day, and have gotten onto a romance kick. Actually, I'm going through all my romances that I haven't read or don't remember what they're about and culling. I'm trying to read, rate and review in quick sequence, though it doesn't always get on the site right away (I have my LT catalog in a database on my Palm and write it there first).

My primary genre is SF (fantasy and SF both - I don't separate them). Beyond that I read mystery, romance, animal stories, children's stories, science, biography, history, crafts...just about anything.

My absolute favorite Romance author is Suzanne Brockmann - I just got started (3-4 months ago) on her big books (Troubleshooters series), but have been addicted to Tall, Dark and Dangerous for years. Other favorites include Lyn Stone, Lois Faye Dyer, Justine Davis, and just recently Robin D. Owens (overlap from SF!). Another one (two?) that overlaps but I classify them as SF are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller (they write together, but the books I'm talking about are all under Sharon).

Their Liaden novels are fantastic. The Liaden are a very formal culture, with a strong Balance ethic - nothing as crude as simple dueling, but that kind of defending one's honor. Most of the novels deal with a Liaden and a Terran - hmmm, actually all of them are a Liaden man and a Terran woman. Nova hasn't had her story yet and Anthora's got sort of shoveled into Val Con's. The 'Terrans' have a wide variety of cultures - from Gaelic to...Arab-ish...to Mother Goddess (and men have little/no standing), that I can recall off hand. Great stories, read them. Conflict of Honors is the best one to start with, Agent of Change (which was the first published) starts a long sequence (Carpe Diem, Plan B, I Dare) and references events in CoH. And then there's the two (so far) prequels, with another one being written right now, and some of the side books...

Ahem. Didn't mean to get carried away. There's a lot of SF romances I read, as well as straight (or mostly straight) romances. In romances, I read contemporary, spy/intrigue, Regency historicals, (some) medieval historicals, time travel, paranormal, and just about anything that catches my fancy. I'm in the Society for Creative Anachronism and know a little bit about medieval society, and there's an awful lot of medieval historicals that drive me nuts for getting simple things wrong, which is why I'm picky about those.

Also I tend to write very long posts. :D

329> DL, the Liadens are pretty firmly SF - space ships. Robin D. Owens is fantasy and fantasy-like SF - in the Celta series (Heart Mate and the rest) it's psi/magic but with frequent references to the space ship that brought their ancestors to the planet. The Summoning series (Guardian of Honor etc) is pretty pure fantasy - people magically summoned from this world to one where magic works and monsters are trying to destroy the land.

Thanks - I've seen recommendations for Gabriel's Ghost several times, I'm planning to look for it.

I love Harelquin Historicals and buy them by the boat load... even though I work at a library! I really like Shannon Drake (Heather Graham) and Kasey Michaels.

I also love contemporary novels and the funnier the better. My favorite book of all times is Stuck in Shangri La by Kasey Micheals, although Jennifer Crusie is another must read on my list.

This looks like a really fun group and I can't wait to keep up with all the new books that I hope everyone will tell me about.

Hi a newbie from London. I love short paranormal and historical romance with lot of spice! Cos my boredom threshold is very high!

That's why I love Harlequin. Emma Darcy, Miranda Lee and Lynne Graham are my favourites. They write hot and sexy stories.

I'm also an addict to Pride and Prejudice, from original novel, movies, tv to fan fiction. Love them nearly all. Pamela Aiden, Kara Louise and Enid Wilson are three great ones.

I've written some fanfic, but it was ages ago. Mostly X-Files, Harry Potter and Danny Phantom stuff. I'm not even sure how much of it I still have access to, the computer I used during that time got wrecked when we had a massive surge go through the house.

Hi! I guess I'm the newbie here.

I'm making my 1st foray into romance (as I'll be handling that part of our fiction collection at my library) so this genre is and isn't familiar to me.

Among others, I'm a fan of Jean Plaidy, read all of Jane Austen's books including her lesser known works, read all 3 of the Bronte sisters, read Gone with the Wind and its sequel Scarlett: Sequel to Gone with the Wind, the list goes on...

Hope to enjoying reading your posts about your faves! :)

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I like historical and paranormal romances, especially pirates and vampires but any tall, dark, alpha male will do.

Some of my old favorites are: Johanna Lindsey, Amanda Quick, Teresa Medeiros Catherine Coulter, Heather Graham, Elizabeth Lowell, Jude Deveraux, Julie Garwood, Virginia Henley, and more. It broke my heart when some of them switched from historical to romantic suspense.

Newer favorites are: Lynsay Sands, Katie MacAlister, and J.R. Ward and for Urban Fantasy: Keri Arthur, Patricia Briggs, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Charlaine Harris.

I guys, I guess I’ve been in the group for a little while know but I never noticed this topic.

I don’t know exactly how to describe my type of romance books. I love historical and I read a lot of Harlequin Presents books. Other then those I’ve read a few Harlequin Intrigue, Silhouette and Blaze.

Some of the authors that I like are Sandra Marton, Penny Jordan, Sally Mackenzie, Nicole Jordan, Rebecca York, J.D.Robb, and Celeste Bradley.

I tbr pile is full of romance novels, especially Harlequin Presents books. I often shop for books at used book stores and HP book are generally 3 for $1, so I always end up buying them faster then I can read them. They were also the first romance novels that I read, so I've been collecting them longer. I've only been reading historical romance for about 3 years, and slowly at first.

Hi everyone
I'm an old member, but it's so long since I poked my nose in the door I thought I should probably re-introduce myself.
If it's romance I read it (well mostly, I'm not a fan of medicals). I especially enjoy romantic suspense like Linda Howard and paranormals like Nalini Singh & Sherrilyn Kenyon.
I also enjoy reading fantasy (does have to be romance).
However, I enjoy romance so much I even write the things (first book coming soon FYI - my website: http://louised.weebly.com/ ) I'm still trying to get over the being able to say that - first book :)

Hi everyone!
I'm a long time member of LT, but I had sort of wandered away from the Talk function over the past year or two (during the period when I suddenly became a romance reader), and now I have been delightedly soaking up recommendations from past discussions since joining the group this afternoon. What a friendly group you have here!

Anyway, my tastes tend to lean towards the historical, the angsty, and books which push at (or play with) the boundaries of the genre or of what language can do. That said, I read pretty widely within periods and sub-genres. (I am a literature and drama prof by profession, so I like to think that I can come to love anything that is done well and thoughtfully.) I love (love!) Judith Ivory, Sherry Thomas, Meredith Duran, and Carolyn Crane, and I have recently really enjoyed works by Jennifer Crusie and Courtney Milan. I am always ravenous for suggestions, if you have any for me!

435marietherese
Oct 30, 2010, 1:42 am

Welcome, sycoraxpine! How lovely to see you here. (I've seen you elsewhere on LT over the years as we share quite a few non-romance books).

A recommendation: have you read Mary Stewart's Nine Coaches Waiting? It's actually rather angsty for a Stewart novel and quite beautifully written, with an exciting chase scene and some remarkable descriptions of the natural world (this last eventually came to dominate Stewart's later, less romantic novels set in the English countryside-novels that probably come closer to what we now term "women's fiction" than today's standard romance novel). It's also one of Stewart's sexiest novels (I guess a French hero allowed her to turn the heat up a bit!) A classic that every romance reader should at least glance at.

Another book I'd recommend to you, despite the fact that it's not "really" a romance (but is a fascinating, suspenseful, and ultimately strongly feminist work of historical fiction) is Barbara Michaels' Black Rainbow. Quite Gothic but, unlike so many classic Gothic novels which end up validating inequalities of class and sex, this is unflinching in its examination and condemnation of male and upper class privilege.

Finally, for a bit of metafictional fun, I suggest Joan Smith's Memoirs of a Hoyden. This is a light-hearted Regency romp told in the first-person by the heroine, an author and adventuress who proves a decidedly unreliable narrator. Any reader familiar with standard Regency romance tropes will find much to chuckle over (the hero is named Lord Kestrel, for heaven's sake!) but careful readers will especially enjoy Smith's clever subversion of romantic narratives and Regency sexual politics.

P.S. I absolutely love that you are a woman unafraid of exclamation points! As a fellow devotee of that most useful symbol of intense enthusiasm, I salute you! :-)

436sycoraxpine
Oct 30, 2010, 1:51 pm

It's true, marietherese, that I have never met an exclamation point (or a parenthetical) that I could resist. Before every email I send I have to go back and edit out several, just to prevent myself from coming across as a manic golden retriever puppy.

And I am *so* excited about these recs. Isn't Barbara Michaels also Elizabeth Peters? I used to love the Peabody mysteries when I was a teenager, so I will remain forever loyal to her (although I am a bit nervous that they won't hold up quite as well on a reread).

Re: the Joan Smith novel - I'm so excited. Metafiction is right up my alley (in fact, I'm teaching a course in metatheatre right now)....

Well, I note with some pride that I managed to resist the temptations of the exclamation point for this whole message, but to be fair I did fall prey to some of its brethren in emotive punctuation, like the ellipsis and the emphatic asterisk. Ah well, in for a dime, in for a dollar!!!

Hello,
I am Katelyn and I'm 20, I am a seamstress at a shoe repair shop.
I am interested in Paranormal Romance, Futuristic Romance, Navy seal/bodyguard style romance, and Historical (mostly about highlanders) romance. Those seem to be my main genres. I like Romance in general and some Erotica as well. I may not post very often.
Some Authors I adore are Kresley Cole, Christine Warren, Maya Banks, Christine Feehan, Lori Foster, Lynsay Sands, Debbie Mazzuca, Jennifer Ashley, Jaid Black, Sandra Hill, Kerrilyn Sparks, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Karen Marie Moning, Janet Chapman, Karen Hawkins, Michelle M. Pillow, Teresa Meideros, and a few others.

It's nice to meet you.

Hi Katelyn. Welcome! Post just as often as you like. There are no requirements here beyond liking the occasional romance ;-)

Welcome Katelyn! I'm Liz. Glad to see another paranormal romance reader here. Every month there's a "What are you reading . . . ?" thread where most of the discussion happens. Hope you'll post occasionally.

So you're a seamstress at a shoe repair shop? Does that mean that if the zipper broke on my favorite pair of boots, a shoe repair store might be able to fix or replace it?

Hello, I am a new member also, and you listed most of my favorite authors. I have a personal library of books that I keep that I can reread multiple times without getting tired of them.

Hope you are all good. Would really appreciate help locating books/Authors of below described books:

1. It’s an old harlequin I think the heroine was American and married the Hero - Abdul I think he was a Prince. But on their Wedding day he gets hurt and she takes off as one of his cousins was trying to rape her. Years later she wants a divorce and he insists she must go to his country to get it. She travels and he keeps her there for a month...

2. Second book is a Historical Romance where two brothers/warriors are fighting in a war and they abduct 2 sisters who are very beautiful. The older brother who is the king keeps the elder sister as she pledges her loyalty to him if they let the younger sister go. He keeps her and later in the book the brother of his wife comes to look for his sisters (they are enemies) and he has the brothers sister with him called Leonore and brings her to the estate. Later the yuh her brother marries the younger sister..
