Kristel's Reading 75 in 2023, 3rd quarter

A half a year has gone by. I made 75 books in June.

I've been a part of 75 Books Challenge since 2018. I am a recent widow (15 months), recent retiree, and a lover of lists and books. I try to read 1001 books, Pulitzer, Booker, SFF, and horror and particicpate in various challenges here and there. I am on GR and moderate the group Reading 1001. I also am on Litsy and enjoy Bookspin, Double Spin and Bookspin Bingo. I spend time in Florida and Minnesota but mostly Minnesota which is where my family resides.

I also enjoy Wordle, Antiwordle, and Quordle.

2023

I also have been working at reading 1001 books which really is more than 1001 books now. I started running a group on Shelfari before Amazon took them down. We then migrated to Goodreads which unfortunately is badly neglected by Amazon as well. Our group is Reading 1001.

Here's my ticker for 1001 books. It's probably not accurate but close enough.

Currently reading The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff. Not sure what I think of this book that is set in India, written by an American author with Indian origin and not enough information about the author to make an informed decision about this book. This book is set in India and features a single woman whose husband has “disappeared”.

- poor India, slums, unclean villages
- Hindu vs Muslim
- upper castes vs lower castes

Sunday, summing up the week. We got some rain, three days this week. We did not get the bad hail that areas not that far away got. Ruined lots of property and probably destroyed crops. County fair is done for another year. Made a trip to St. Cloud and picked up copies of Middlemarch and the The Illiad for my shelves. And also The Wind in the Willows which I don’t think I’ve ever read.

Today it is cloudy and we will probably get some rain. I did not sleep last night so it might be a day of falling asleep rather than reading but I did make some progress last night because of not being able to sleep.

Summary for past week
I read 4 books and none of them stood out much. My highest rating went to The Personal History of Rachel DuPree, higher than the Booker Short listed If I Survive You. To be fair, I think Jonathan Escoffery has better writing than Weisgarber does, I think the short story format and that it was Booker long list book brought down the scoring.
