Hi all, I used to love this book when I was a teenager in the 90s. I don't know if it written then or earlier.

It was set somewhere on the south coast of England during World War Two. A young teenage girl (around the age of 16) was evacuated there (with her older sister) from London. There was meant to be an older woman looking after them in a cottage but something happened to her and they were left alone. The older sister often wasn't there (can't remember why) so the main character was often unsupervised.

She dreams of being an author and sends short stories to a magazine.

She meets a boy who convinces her to have sex on the premise that he's going away to the war but then it turns out he was going back to boarding school (or something).

She finds diaries of a woman who used to live in the cottage who decades earlier fell pregnant and was sent to an insane asylum and had her baby removed from her.

She eventually meets a young man who she falls in love with. He has PTSD from serving in the war (although it's not called PTSD of course).

She befriends a young pregnant woman whose name I think was Dot and she ends up helping her deliver her baby alone in the cottage.

I can't remember too many other details but I wish I could remember the name of the book!

Pretty sure this is A Little Love Song by Michelle Magorian. It was also published under the title Not a Swan.
