I think we get enough participation in these threads to go to a monthly format . . .

So, for the beginning of July, I'm participating in the group reread of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I'm also working on Little, Big.

The Name of the Wind, so far incredible. I'm in story teller heaven.

Good idea foggi! Currently participating in the reread of Deathly Hallows, and doing first time reads of The Eyre Affair and Queen's Fool. I'm also one chapter away from the end of Agnes Grey, so I should be done with that by 6ish.

Finished with Agnes, moving on to The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

#2 Isn't it fun?

I've finally finished Ship of Destiny! Yay (it was good, tho.)

Tonight, I plan to start another Trollope, this time an exploration of the depths of human greed in The Way We Live Now. plus ca change, Anthony, plus ca change.....

ETA: that is, AFTER I finish my Deathly Hallows chapters, of course.

Currently:
a re-read of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Gods and Generals

I just finished New Moon and I am reading some stories from Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul. I will probably start Fahrenheit 451 today or tomorrow. I have to read it for school.

good thought on the monthly format for this thread foggi, the last one was getting long to load (I think the touchstones make it take longer than if it was just text) and it makes it much easier to keep track of.

I'm continuing on the vampire run with blood trail

Still on "STOP IN THE NAME OF PANTS" The Georgia Nicholson books are hilarious. That girl and I should talk.

*sigh* I have a very bad case of Reader's Conundrum.

SUGEY PANTS!!!

girl, I am listening to a book about DR. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. So far it's hilarious, with lots of Dominican history for us ignorant Americanos. Won the Pulitzer.

And reading the Way We Live Now, finally.

*nodding sagely* Yes, Lg, (LG!!!!!!! MUA!!!!) we Dominicans are known for being witty, hilarious and GORGEOUS, and just plain superior to all other races. I second third whatever that - Great idea, foggi! :)

I'm currently reading Melissa Marr's Ink Exchange.

As soon as I get home on Thursday, I'm going to pick up Deathly Hallows for the group read, and Howl's Moving Castle to read at a regular pace.

Just finished The Gargoyle - it was weird, but not unpleasantly so. My review is here and I feel like it would have been an interesting choice for a book club or something because it was really complex and I think some of the themes could spark interesting discussions, but at the same time it was so incredibly bizarre that I can't see a typical book club ever picking it out.

Now I'm continuing my ARC train with Hannah Tinti's The Good Thief. So far it's very charming. :)

25elbakerone
Jul 9, 2008, 3:07 pm

#24 - I used my time machine to skip forward to August and brought it back with me..... heh heh.... Actually I got a copy direct from the publisher. If you check out the thread over in the Early Reviewers group called "Other Places to Get ARCs" people post a lot of opportunities to get books just by emailing publishers and saying "hi, I'm interested in blah blah blah". I got Curtis Sittenfeld's American Wife that way too (my next in line book) and I was surprised to see that it's also in the July batch. :)

26biblioholic29
Jul 9, 2008, 3:12 pm

I figured it was something like that. I've signed up for something similar with HarperCollins, but I never received anything from them, and I have so many other books, I don't really feel I need anything other than ER. I'll keep it in mind if I ever catch up with my TBR pile though! ;D

I finally got a copy of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil at a library book sale. I've been wanting to read it for quite some time. I started it last night. I'm only in about 60 pages or so, but so far I'm really enjoying it.

::sigh:: for a while I had stopped reading these "what are you reading now" threads because they add more books to my TBR pile. Oh well!

Rissa, I loved The Giver -- you should read it again, it's great.

I'm still reading DH for the discussion, of course. I just finished the ER book I got this month, The Robe of Skulls. Now I'm reading Phantom of the Opera and The Serpent Gift primarily. There are a couple others I'm progressing through very slowly. I think I'll get The Eyre Affair sometime soon.

ETA: The Host finally came in on my library hold list, so I'll be starting that no later than Saturday.

40Marensr
Jul 11, 2008, 12:37 pm

Hmm yes Cat is a great teammate. I owe our success to her and for our next synchronized read. . .

I just finished May Sinclair's The Three Sisters which is sort of inspired by the Brontes. I also finished a reread of Hawthorne's The Blithedale Romance I have just started The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte a biography of the self destructive Bronte brother. I seem to be on a Bronte kick. I am also reading Names on the Land which is a history of place names in the United States, so far it is very interesting and highly readable.

41elbakerone
Edited: Jul 11, 2008, 2:40 pm

I finished Hannah Tinti's The Good Thief (loved it!!! Review is here) and now I'm reading Pillage - which refuses to touchstone - it's a YA fantasy by Obert Skye, so far pretty intriguing.

(why do I always spell intriguing wrong? I think it's the "gui" part - like it should be pronounced in-tree-gwing)

42Espeon200
Jul 11, 2008, 3:40 pm

I finished Midship Wizard Halcyon Blythe over the last weekend, and I think I'll be borrowing the other Halcyon Blythe from the Library soon. It was interesting enough to warrant a read, but I don't think I'll ever re-read it.

43Espeon200
Jul 11, 2008, 6:36 pm

So I picked up Dragonfrigate Wizard Halcyon Blithe at the library, and I also picked up the graphic novel version of Coraline. I also signed up for the new library in a box service which has the library deliver holds to my town, (which is nice), and as I was adding books to my list I noticed that the new Temraire book was out.

Long story short (too late), I placed a hold on Victory of Eagles (which is on order) and I am the first person in the book hold queue. Librarians, does this mean that I'm the first person to get to read the book when the library gets it in? If so, it's almost as good as buying a new book...

Anyway, I've been desperate for the new book and I'm excited it's finally out.

44foggidawn
Jul 11, 2008, 6:43 pm

#43 -- Yes. You will be the first person to read the library's copy of the book. The downside is that you have to wait for it to go through processing. For major bestsellers (Deathly Hallows, Breaking Dawn, etc.) the library will usually get it processed before the street date, so it can start going out on the same day it appears in bookstores. Most books, however, don't come out with as much fanfare . . . so it may be a couple of weeks before it makes its way from the distributor's warehouse, through the library's technical services department, and to you.

I'm excited to hear that Victory of Eagles is out, though! I'll have to track it down.

*goes off to check her own library catalog*

40- Why thank you, Maren!

41- The first few times I read intrigue, I always pronounced it in-truge in my head. I'm not sure why I was pronouncing it that way, but it took a while before I started saying it the right way.

Right now I'm reading The Eyre Affair, which I really like so far! It's very funny.

I'm curious, suge and Maren, what are Persephone books like?

51suge
Jul 12, 2008, 8:31 pm

Oh cat they are absolutely fabulous. Persphone punblishes fantastic but lost literature by (sometimes obscure) female authoirs. all the covers are a lovely silver and the endcovers feature wonderful prints from antique Victorian and Edwardian fabrics. Each book comes with a bookmark to match the particular print. for example my the making of a marchiness comes with "Tulips" a figured cotton from 1901. Todo fantastico. All books are 10 pounds or 25 for three.

Mar! I am a persephone books group member! I only own two, the aforemention, and the Shuttle. I am enjoying The making of a Marchioness tremendously! Mar you must, must, must make the pilgrimage to Lambs Conduit Street!!!

Well, I finished Dragonfrigate Wizard Halcyon Blithe, and I was pleasantly surprised. I went into the book thinking it was going to just be good, but it would rate somewhere between a 3- and 4-star for me. Unfortunately it's one of those series you have to read in order.

If you like the type of titles Persephone has you might also want to check out the Virago Modern Classics group. Similarly, this is a British publishing house that publishes neglected works by women from the victorian era through the present. They have some great books. The older covers all had a lovely distinctive bottle green edge and an apple with a bite out of it. They are also a lovely group and a great place to find wonderful little known books.

KIK! Good one! :)

I have a question about Early Reviewers. Does anyone think it's easier to get books if you have a high percentage of reviews for your cataloged books?

73readafew
Jul 16, 2008, 1:46 pm

72 > no. I don't think it makes much difference one way or the other, though I don't think it hurts to have a couple reviews.

I have many reviews and only have received 3, and the only time I didn't request books for was the very first offering over a year ago. What makes the most difference is how well the books in question match the library you have entered here at LT. There are some other things that go into it but Tim likes to keep a bit of mystery to reduce working the system. Once you get an ER book not reviewing that one will hurt future chances.

74elbakerone
Jul 16, 2008, 1:46 pm

#72 - There's endless speculation about how ER books are awarded but plenty of people with no reviews have gotten books so even though there are other factors (have you gotten a book before, have you reviewed books you've gotten, etc.) I think the biggest fact in determining who gets what is just how well the book "matches" with your library.

From what I've garnered, publishers come up with a list of "people who like x, will probably like y" and if you have the "x" books in your library (books the publishers compare their work to) you have a good chance of getting a copy of "y" (the ER book that's up for grabs). But again, there's no real formula. Often there are only 15-50 copies of a book with 1000+ requests so even if your library is a near perfect match you might still have only a 5% chance of receiving something.

I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale. It's interesting so far, but I'm hoping it'll get faster. Nothing's happened for over 80 pages now. Oh well, it's good!

Then on my TBR is Kristin Lavensdatter, or something like that. It's a trilogy.

78Espeon200
Edited: Jul 16, 2008, 4:35 pm

I finished Looking For Alaska. It deserved the praise it got, but I think I love the happy-go-luckiness of An Abundance of Katherines a little better.

I ended up not reading Coraline because I'm just not in the mood for a graphic novel right now, so I'm currently bookless (Shock, surprise condolences, I know). The next thing I read all depends on the library now. I've put Raven Rise and Victory of Eagles in my delivery list from the library, but I don't know which is going to get here first at Raven Rise is checked out and Victory of Eagles is on order.

Taking all bets. I'm putting a 2-1 ratio on Raven Rise. I think it's twice as likely that I'll be reading Raven Rise before Victory of Eagles. Any takers?

79Always_Reading
Jul 16, 2008, 4:30 pm

Never heard of either of them...

But Coraline? Ick. It really wasn't that good. Creepy and sometimes interesting, but not great. Sounds like you made the right choice.

80Espeon200
Jul 16, 2008, 4:38 pm

Raven Rise is the latest in D. J. MacHale's Pendragon series. This one looks interesting because he got rid of his main character in the last book in the series, so there's a new traveler.

Victory of Eagles is Naomi Novik's latest in the Temeraire series, and it looks to be interesting because the last book ended with a huge cliffhanger.

I'd recommend either series for different reason. I rate Pendragon as a "borrow" series and Temeraire as an "own" series.

81Marensr

I am loving the book Im reading right now.Burial by Graham Masterton but the only negative point about it is that I cant read it at night because I must admit that this book gives me many scares especially the shadows part partly because I am very good at imagining stuff and I assure you that if I read this book at night and after putting it aside if I see any shadows.I WILL scream...That is guaranteed!!!! ;-P

I finished The Pilgrim Hawk which was very good. Now I am bouncing about between half read books looking for the next thing that grabs me. Thos books include No Signposts in the Sea and The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte and Salem Chapel but I will probably pick up something different soon. I am in that state where I am not quite satisfied with anything I am reading.

Saify I loved Three Men on a Boat. Hilarious accurately describes it.

MrA I would like to know what you think of The Penelopiad I have been thinking about picking it up.

I've decided I'm going to go ahead and start my rereading for the release of Breaking Dawn. I'll begin rereading the book today.

give up, el, you'll never catch up. There's an upside to that one.

I took a break form Trollope's musings on shortsightedness and greed to read a cheap thriller that a friend pushed on me. Oi. The priest did it. I never would have guessed. *rolls eyes*

I'm not even gonna bother to review it, it was so bad. What do I say to my friend? I really don't want her to recommend any other books, but I don't want to alienate her.

Well I'm in the middle of the book, and so far it has been good. I don't know if I like it as much as the earlier books, but it is enjoyable so far. I'll have updated impressions when I finish it.

#102 LG, I recently had a friend recommend a book that I didn't like. Interestingly, it was also a cheap thriller! I got halfway through and she asked what I thought so far. Thankfully we are good friends, so I told her the truth and added that I was willing to finish it if she thought it was brilliant. I was relieved when she said that if I wasn't into it at that point, I wasn't going to get into it. I didn't finish it.

I did feel bad though because she started reading HP by my encouragement. I console myself by remembering that HP is way better than any thriller. And she just finished book 6, so obviously she likes them well enough to keep reading each book!

#105 compski, I do hope you don't start to feel similar "attacking" emotions for your HE friends. ;)

I just finished Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen on the train this morning and it was one of the best books I have read about lost in a long time. LG if you are reading I *think* you would like it. She has a lot of the magical realism of Murakami but without the noir overtones.

I then started the short stories in St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves which is very interesting thus far.

Well, I finished Victory of Eagles and it was good. Not as big a cliffhanger this time. In fact I really don't know where Novik is going to take the series next. I don't know if she's going to stay with Laurence or if she is going to bring a new character into it.

Now all I'm waiting for is for Raven Rise to come. Hopefully it will be in the drop box tomorrow morning

I finished American Wife earlier this week (reviewed here) and I needed a break from plain old literary fiction. Plus I figure a dose of Stephanie Meyer now will get me ready to devour Breaking Dawn next week. :)

I've finished The Time Paradox and I found it to be enjoyable. I did feel that Colfer was getting caught in the same old plot ruts that he's created for himself, but he did a good job of tying everything together in the end with plenty of plausible explanations.

I've got a couple of books in my TBR list so we'll see what the library as when I go today.

#125 -- The sequel, The Grand Tour, was not quite as good, in my opinion, but I realy liked the third book, The Mislaid Magician. Sorcery and Cecelia is a fun read!

I read Victory of Eagles this weekend. I love the Temeraire series! I'm alo listening to the audiobook of Life, the Universe and Everything, rereading Twilight, and tryin to kep up with my DH chapters for the reread.

Just got started on Vixen 03 by Clive Cussler. Dirk Pitt novels have become my guilty pleasure. It's like watching True Lies. The action is ridiculous, the love stories are over the top, and the dialogue is cheesy, but somehow I can't stop reading them.

I wish I would have ahd them them when I was 14.

#132 - For a second I thought you meant you were done rereading Breaking Dawn!! I think I've been hanging around ARC readers too long. ;)

I just finished The Host and I really liked it. I've always been a sci-fi fan and it definitely reaffirmed in my mind that Meyer has talent as a storyteller. I'm onto an ARC of The Heretic's Daughter now and hoping to finish it before BD comes out.

I finished Good Calories Bad Calories last night. I'm continuing to read Everything you Know about God is wrong and re-read Harry POtter and the Deathly Hallows. Becuase I watched the HBP trailer 7 times last night, I want to re-read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. I got Before you Leap last night at work, and am waiting for Breaking Dawn this weekend (although that will be read in August).

I went to the library Monday and left with eight books, one movie, the graphic novelization of The Hobbit, and the first discs of two anime series (Trigun and Hellsing if you were interested). So now I'm going to be reading a lot to get through all the books before their due dates.

I'v started with The Somnambulist and I've been trying to like it, but nothing about the book has really drawn me in yet. I'm going to give it a couple more chapters before I give it up as a bad job.

The rest of my reading list is as follows:
The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation. 1 The Pox Party
The Wednesday Wars
Feed
Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians
Neuromancer
Epic (won't touchstone) by Conor Kostick

I've finished the movies so thee nothing distracting me from the books now and I'll let you know what I think of them as I finish.
