For those who are particularly interested in the 13th century: I just opened a new group "Federico II" about Frederick (Friedrich, Federico) II, the astounding king & emperor, the much-loved and bitterly-hated Stupor Mundi. It would be great if you joined me!

Hey, that's MY emperor! 8-) So which biographies have you read? Kantorowicz rather romanticizes him, but Abulafia, on the other hand, strikes me as buying into the papal propaganda too readily. My favorite Fred bio is Eberhard Horst's _Friedrich der Staufer; die Biographie_. Unfortunately, I don't think it's been translated into English. And if your German is good enough and you want to look at documents of the period, you can't beat Klaus M. Heinisch, _Kaiser Friedrich II. in Briefen und Berichten seiner Zeit_. There's a good novel about him I'm blanking on the title of, too.

Federico is large enough an emperor for us to share, don't you think? Just now, I invited you to join de Federico group. Perhaps you'd like to browse through my books on Federico. Like yourself, I enjoyed Eberhard Hordt a lot! But by far the most extensive and thourough (although at times a bit wearisome to read) I find Friedrich II by Wolfgang Stuerner. There are some nice novels about Federco. The second best I find Zeit laesst steigen dich und stuerzen by Eberhard Cyran
