I place a lot of value on books (in books? to books? not sure of the proper grammar there..) but I believe in USING books, not preserving them in a perpetual state of 'new' condition. I cherish the books I read quite a bit, thank you! But if no one will mooch it, then why not 'release' it into the world?
Next edwinbcn will be saying that people who use libraries don't cherish books because they let them get all beat up and *gasp* READ...

I cherish the books I read quite a bit, thank you! But if no one will mooch it, then why not 'release' it into the world?

I was so fired up by his comment that I had to re-post it on the BC Talk forum!! I hadn't posted on that forum for quite a while, but I needed to vent and get support from my buddies there. :)

Of course, now you know that I am SO nosy that I will go look and maybe throw a polite tantrum, LOL.
I 'buy' books, I BookCross books but I NEVER sell books. Even ones I personally didn't much like may appeal to someone else. I don't consider BC labels to have damaged a book anymore than bookplates did in previous times. The guy sounds like a pillock!

Chill, guys. This is a rant about the economics of books sales. He's a capitalist living in China! I think he's wrong, but if he's a little neurotic about the economic value of everything it's understandable. No point shooting a mosquito with an elephant gun.

I have no problem with BC. In fact I think it's a great thing, but I would agree that there is a mentality difference between BC'ers and a large number of other book folks.
Many LT folks use this site precisely because they like to keep their books. Others here are using LT simply to keep track of their reading. I don't think there's anything wrong with either point of view. I loved BC when I was there, but one of the reasons I stopped using it was because of the mentality that if you were just there to be social with other book folks, there was something wrong with that.
That's part of what I love about LT. LT exists for both camps. Personally, I'm a collector. Not in the own the valuable copy sense, but more in the "it makes me feel good to keep my books and to own lots of books" sense.
I don't know what the fellow that started all this posted, but I would agree that there are differing points of view on books and book ownership. (Just for the record, I don't book mooch either. It just seems simpler to sell off books I really don't want and use the credit to buy those I do.)

I do mooch/swap and sometimes I do bookcrossing, but I also donate to my library, auxillary and to the local school depending on the books I have available. Some books I keep (the ones I think I will want to read again) others I give to friends that want to read them and the rest should be read (in my opinion) so I try to find homes for them and if they don't trade well or fit in with what the school or library needs, I may take it to the hospital with a bookcrossing tag on it. The surgical wing always has need of something to read.
That is my 2 cents, it is just too bad that some people seem to set in there ways to accept other peoples choices.
