I first posted information about this in the Amazon Kindle group but got only two responses. Perhaps more people will be interested here.
There is a report at http://news.cnet.com/amazons-kindle-2-le... about a new version of the Kindle. There is no mention of a release date if this is indeed a new version.
Which do you think you would prefer, the new version or the old? I am satisfied with the version I have although I would like to inspect the new one.
Of course there is nothing official about this but it is nice to speculate.

I remember seeing the photos somewhere. My feeling right now is that I like the buttons the way they are. I like to have a button within easy reach no matter how I am holding the kindle. I also don't see much point in making it larger without an increase in screen size. I am happy with version 1! It is my constant companion.

With the money I have invested in Kindle 1, I not only am satisfied, I would want to get several years use out of it before moving on to a newer version. I'm sure they may have withheld some features as a sort of "planned obsolescence" in the beginning but the first version satisfies all my needs, above and beyond.

Yes, Bookworm, I agree with you. However, I would like software updates. Like everyone else, I am hoping for folders. Even some additions to the show/hide menu would be welcome. For example, why not the ability to show/hide samples? That would take very little effort on their part. Oh well. My experience is that most companies (Apple excepted??) either do software well or hardware well. It takes time to get them both right. Still, I am addicted to my Kindle.

A report in the Wall Street Journal maintains all Kindles are sold out after getting a big push by Oprah. Too bad for those hoping for one for Christmas. I love mine the way it is, BTW. I am wondering why so few posts re: the kindle????

I suppose there are not very many posts regarding the kindle because most people are just reading books, so they integrate into the main book threads, depending on their interests. I like the kindle threads because I like to know what books are good that are specifically available for the kindle. Until a new kindle comes out, I am not sure what else to post about. Of course it is fun to talk about new accessories, but there aren't very many of those. I imagine a software update (oh please, please) will also elicit excitement and comments.

I agree with krazy4katz the software of the current kindle really needs an upgrade. I wish I could somehow hide books I have read (but still have them available if wanted) and folders would be really helpful. It wouldn't take much to do it either (I am a programmer for a living) so I hope they do update the Kindle software sometime soon. But that being said, I am quite happy with the reading experience and I don't see myself spending a lot on a new version of the Kindle unless it has Significant updates that would really make it worthwhile.
