I have 1,724 books entered. Only a handful aren't actually in my house, at this point.
What about you?
What about you?
2maggie1944
I have 1543 but I think there may be a few duplicates... I could do some work on that but I'd rather spend my time posting odd and meaningless comments in the Green Dragon.
3Choreocrat
Just 820. But they're all there in my house, excepting the ones on loan, and the ones on my office shelves (about 30).
There are a few I haven't entered, but I can't remember which ones they are...

I have a bunch, probably close to 100 of OLD books that I haven't entered. I want to scan the covers, and I would rather post meaningless comments as well.
5Melsar
I have 612 and same as WillSteed they are all in the house or my office at work. If you see a book in my library that is a computer book it's in the office.
All of the kids books are uncatalogued.

My daughter has her own LT account, with 500+ books in it. She's 17 and did it all herself over the past two years. I opened an account for my son, and entered about 5 books and then gave up.
7yapete
432. I guess I have a long way to go... But I rate & tag all of them and have 127 reviews, if that counts...
9CarolO
Not enough! I thought I had a lot of books until I joined LT and saw how many books you all have. Most, but not all, of my books are entered and I have 653.
12DeusExLibrus
Currently a measly 387, down from ~400 before I did a purge. However, that doesn't include the kids books in my closet here at home, the books I'm going to make disappear from my parent's library and reappear in mine, the member's package of six or seven books on the way to my PO box at school from the One Spirit book club, and the books I will more than likely buy while I'm home.
13MrAndrew
242. I win!
P.S. I have less books than Clam's daughter. Or, perhaps a more accurate comparison: I have accumulated 5.6 books per year during my lifetime, whereas Clam's daughter has an acquisition rate of 29+ books/year.

1359 listed, but I have given some away. And I want to have all the books in the house listed, but I suspect that some of my husband's books are not on here, mostly his computer stuff.
15katylit
I have 1503 catalogued, but I lent 3 to my brother-in-law and I have a sneaky suspicion that he thinks I gave them to him, so maybe I'm down to 1500, but I have 2 coming in the mail, so maybe soon I'll be up to 1502, but then I have 3 to go to the used bookstore for exchange, but then when I go there I'll be sure to pick up at least 3 more so I'll probably be up to at least 1502 again, more likely 1503. I think I'll stay with 1503 at the moment. *sigh*
16sparrowbunny
I have 1130 books listed, and have yet to get around to cataloguing the cookbooks. "Only" 656 of those books are actually mine. I thought my parents had a lot more books in those shelves, but I catalogued every single one of them, so LT can't lie about the numbers. (Well, actually, it can. About seven of those 656 are listed boxsets, so technically I have even more books.
17janoorani24
I have 2395 books entered in LT, but I haven't finished entering in my kids' books or all of my quilting books, plus I know I have some more coming in the next week from Amazon, Powell's and BookMooch. I've sent 22 books to book moochers, but I can't bear to delete them, so I tag them as book mooched. I seem to have accumulated almost 48 books per year!
18hfglen
3033 as of now. A few more to come as gaps in cataloguing become apparent. however many of these are booklets describing places i've visited (tagged ephemera in my catalogue).
19Choreocrat
Ooh, an interesting thought, Janoorani24. 820/27 = just over 30 books a year on average.
20dreamlikecheese
I have 545 books at the moment - all of them in my bedroom (trust me when I say there is no room in my room). Let's see... 545/24 = almost 23 per year on average, and that's just the ones I've kept. My parents made me do a huge cull when I left home 6 years ago (I can't believe it's been that long).
21Jenson_AKA_DL
I own 944 books. However, I have 1359 listed because I review borrowed books and if I don't list them, the reviews go away. I have 542 reviews.
22Morphidae
I have 2,357 books. I have to add about 100 books or so that I've read but don't own. That's 54 books per year.
23reading_fox
788 books listed. A few of which have purged. A few belong to OtherHalf. I still have about 100 or so of OtherHalfs books to get around to adding.
24PensiveCat
650. That's pretty much everything. A vast portion of those are TBR's.
25Busifer
1104. Doesn't include a(nother!) box of my old YA that I found in the cellar some weeks ago but can't find a place for (yet).
I have divested some 80-100 books. Those are NOT listed. I only get rid of books I won't ever read (again or ever; some of them hadn't even been opened up since I bought them in the 80's...), so why keep them listed?
Reviewing my shelving space recently I think some more will have to go. I can't find additional shelves to add to my system, and the books keeps on accumulating ;-)
I read books that I don't own. Those are not listed. I review them in other settings (mainly work).
My list is partly for reasons of insurance policy. Listing books not in the house would be a fraud ;-)

2875 minus 2 that I keep in my LT account or the Early Reviewer Gods won't give me any more. Plus there are about 80 or so tagged 'bookmooch' that I'm getting rid of slowly.
I found a box of books in the dormer Saturday while cleaning the guest bedroom - there are probably 20 in that box. One's from 1899 and one's from 1917, so it should be a pretty exciting box! Plus I have about 20 or so of my daughter's books to enter and perhaps 200 of my husband's, but when I add them they'll be tagged with their initials so I can still keep track of MY books.
Our cleaning ladies gave me Sue Grafton's K through T (or U?) - gorgeous hardcover books - that I haven't added yet. They're smokers and although the books don't smell too much, I can still get a whiff of the smoke and want to eliminate the odor before adding them. (I've probably given them 100 books over the years, mostly paperbacks, so they returned the favor with interest).
I've given 80-some away on bookmooch and took 150 to the thrift store when I cataloged my books initially.

1,310 for now. We'll see what the used bookstore has in store for me this week! :)
And, of course, not enough room for them all.

#27 Does anybody have good ideas how to build a cheap and good-looking bookshelf (mounted to the wall). I know that is the holy grail, but any help is appreciated. Any good books on doing that?
Since my wife got membership in Borders and Barnes & Noble, we are buying a book or two for every coupon they send.... ;-) The books in LT are just my books, I haven't catalalogued my wife's (unless I read it), so we are pretty much falling over our books. Help!!

780 and holding until I can get more bookcases. I'm so desperate for space that I stacked books vertically and slid them onto the shelves top-first just so I could walk through the library again. Unfortunately, it means I can't read the spines.
30StormRaven
2,419 and counting. I'm about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through adding all of my books into LT. I need to build a new bookcase soon, but I have to figure out where to put it first.
31Atomicmutant
#28, I affectionately call my solution "piles".
:)
There is another group on LT completely devoted to bookshelves . . .
It's called "bookcases, if you build them they will fill" or something like that.

I have 224 in my personal LT account. That's with about 3 boxes in the storage building not recorded.
I have 2600 in my school LT account. That's with about 3 boxes in the closet, several boxes in the storage building, and a B&N bag full of new books not recorded.

1,001 books, total.
865 of those my wife and I actually own.
111 are on my wishlist.
The remaining books I don't own, but I've either read (and don't have on a wishlist) or am interested in reading.

2048 books. Every one of them in this house somewhere (or the car) (or the van). I've added a number of knock-together bookshelves, but I still stumble over piles.
36aviddiva
1714 books catalogued and at least a couple hundred yet to go. And that doesn't include most of my sheet music! :-/ I'm getting to the point where I have so many more books than I have shelves that I'm going to have to deaccession quite a few if I want to bring in any new ones. I guess you could say I'm a book hoarder.
37trisweather
Only a little over 200 in LT. With my job here I get an apartment, but there are a long waiting list, so I live temporarily someplace else. Which means that my furniture and most of my books are in storage. But when I get my apartment one of the firt things I am going to do is get them into my LT library, so I finally will have a proper listing of them

#40 - I sent a check. :)
I have 927 in my LT library, which doesn't reflect my home library at the moment. I haven't entered most of my TBRs, or my reference/school books, and I have entered books I borrowed or didn't keep. My LT library is a reflection of what I read. At the moment, anyway.

9313 and still counting. About 2000 in storage and the rest on walls in bed room and study. True, most of them are (European sized) comic books and graphic novels, but I still have over 100m of shelves full of books.
And I have read all of them.
And I have read all of them.

352 but that doesn't include my teaching books. I have an unexpected day off tomorrow so I might do them then, I have been putting it off for ages!
45clamairy
#40 - Not to fret! :o) You're welcome here, no matter how many books you've managed to enter.
46xicanti
I have 750 in my permanent collection and 169 in my TBR account. All but five of the books in the permanent collection still live with me; the others were review copies that I only added to my library so I could post the reviews.
Mine feels teensy compared to some peoples'. I don't include books I passed along, (except the abovementioned five), and I don't add fiction to my library until I've read it and decided to keep it. I do own a few nonfiction titles that I haven't read yet, but they're in the minority. I've still got to finish off the catalogue, too; two and a half years in, and I still haven't gotten around to adding my academic stuff or my really old books.

2192 books so far. That doesn't include the 8 I got from the library today.
I have a little less that half of them in my possession. Most of what I have read in the past couple years came from the library. I've cleared out a bunch of my books in the past 5 years to make space for my little readers' books.

I have 721 in my LT library now (722, if you count the book that arrived today but I haven't added yet), but this isn't my physical library. It's everything I own and/or can remember reading at some point (and I know there's more out there; I discover still more remembered titles every once in a while). I have close to 300 books sitting in my house right now.
50kawika
I hit 1600 this morning and am even reading something that isn't listed yet, as I don't really own it. I'll add it later because I'll end up wanting to do a review of it.
51herebebooks
I have 687 books logged right now, but I think there are a still few older ones (pre-ISBN) that I haven't put in yet. And a few of them are books I didn't keep but reviewed, though I think I'm going to move them off to another account so I don't get confused. :D
53scaifea
1679. There's still probably about 500 or so at my parents' house that haven't made the more, and thus haven't been LT'ed yet.
54Musereader
I have 1993, of wich 1795 I actually own, and are on my shelves, i listed a few which are my brothers and there are several in the family library. Only ones i can't get hold of within seconds are the 25 at my sisters house, the 4 I borrowed from the library, about 10 that belong to my ex (that I don't speak to anymore) shame, he had a beautiful set of Koji Suzuki books by vertical that I never read
56MissWoodhouse1816
Many thanks to you all for the kind words and the pass. I'm so excited!!!! I was just afraid seeing all the thousands of books represented here that you all would think that I didn't take LT seriously. I love this place! As soon as I get a break from work I'm going to upgrade and start entering my books. :) Stay tuned...

2,355 books so far, with probably 1000-2000 more to go, including 200+ sheet music.
I have about 25 wishlist, and have listed books that I have on Bookmooch offered and gone when I remember, as I don't want them showing up in my library again. :)
I also leave in gift books, so I know what I sent people.

I just found a box of books in my guest bedroom dormer, obviously my mother-in-law's, and have cataloged and gotten rid of appropriately.
Plus I just pulled all my books tagged 'bookmooch' and put them on one shelf, together. Now I have room on LOTS of shelves for new books.

Noone has kicked me so instead I have opened a bottle of wine and settled down for the evening. So it is your fault if I have books over the floor in big piles;)
75Musereader
I moved into my bedroom with two bookcases with half a shelf free, now, no shelf space and there is a row of hardbacks standing on the floor along the front of the bookcases, 7 piles of paperbacks in front of that, A Stephen King Hardback pile and an antique book pile, not to mention the TBR pile on my bed next to my pillow - as I have a double bed with one pillow, I literally sleep with my books! (and sometimes on them too)

right now, i have 2,233. I had over 2,500 a week or two ago. I am never going to finish catologuing either!
I am reorganizing my library. i had a LOT of books in boxes sitting in the floor. I have added a few bookcases and started reshelving. I think all the books are entered from authors last names starting with N-Z, plus a few shelves of books NOT organized by authors last name, like all my Scotland books are together on one shelf.
I finally got all the books onto the shelves, so I can go back to cataloguing. I want to enter the kids books, too, but they are more difficult. Both my boys go through books quickly and have little desire to keep any that they have finished with. I am entering my daughter's "keeper" books. She is more sentimental than the boys. luckily, the kids all have bookcases in their own bedrooms. My library walls are now completely lined and I have no more room for books in there. I have been trying to weed them out, I have taken about 300 books to the ubs so far and dropped off the ones they didn't want at the public library. but, i am still filling a few boxes with books I am not going to keep. i desperately need to free up some space!

#76 - So, may I ask how you have them shelved? Alphabetically by author? I really need to redo mine, but I have been putting it off...
78maggie1944
My number keeps creeping up....1,546 now. Most on shelves but many, many books scattered around my cluttered house. Sigh
I need Busifer's boy-bot to clean my house and shelve all my books.

741 books so far -- all owned (I track books that are read but not owned differently). It doesn't look like a lot of books in comparison with some of your numbers, but it sure feels like a lot whenever I have to move! ;-) Fortunately, I don't plan on doing that again any time soon!

#77 the end goal is alphabetical by author for 95% of my fiction. Right now, they are grouped by all authors with the same letter, you know, all A authors together then all B authors after, then all C authors next. I do have some "specials" too. All my star wars books are seperate and on a bookcase all together. All my fairy tales are together on a seperate shelf, all my Scotland books, all the Pulitzers, all the Hugos, all the Newbery winners. The Newberys are broken down further, so all the medal winners are chronological followed by all the Honor books, also chronological. i do hope to eventually have all my non-fiction historical books grouped, but haven't done that yet. I may be a little bit OCD or anal-retentive. Undiagnosed, of course!
83DeusExLibrus
A measly 403 for me. However I haven't entered a set of classics I got at a library book sale earlier this year, or part of another set I got at that same sale.
84Grammath
Added another two items to my LT library this morning, bringing the total to 1,558. As of now, there are probably about 950 in my flat, which is essentially my TBR mountain - I just can't stop buying books! They're stored in three bookcases and an assortment of plastic bags in one corner of my bedroom awaiting the purchase of number four.
My LT library includes what I have read in the past and either it came from the library or it has gone to the charity shop.

#82 sevedra - it sounds like you have fun arranging and re-arranging your books! I do too.

I found 11 YA books in the cellar the day before yesterday. Not very good books but I decided to save them anyway - they have some nostalgic value to me, as I spent my weekly allowance buying them back when I was 13, and I think maybe our son will enjoy reading them too, eventually.
87sevedra
#85 - I am having a wonderful time! I am up to 2525 now. I catalogued all the A and B authors yesterday and a bunch of books I had "stored" on the loveseat. I think I want to be a librarian when i grow up :) I am majoring in History right now, but you can only get a Masters in Library Science at GA colleges anyway. So I may end up pursuing it that far.
88karenmarie
#87 good for you! History is a wonderful subject - I didn't major in it in college but find that I love reading history books and historical fiction. A friend of mine, who I met through a bookclub, is a librarian at UNC Chapel Hill and loves her work.
I had my books all cataloged by last summer, but find myself moving things around, getting rid of some here and there, and certainly adding new ones all the time. I just love looking at my books. Sounds like you do too. And it sounds like you have a pretty serious collection too. (so do I!)

sevedra, I majored in history and political science when an undergraduate and truly believe, now, that I should have been a librarian. I went to teaching instead. Now, in retirement, I am doing my best being a volunteer librarian for small libraries like my church and my homeowners association. Library Thing is a wonderful resource for me in these volunteer jobs.

#82 - Understood. There is a HUGE part of my brain that wants to keep my classics separate from my 'popular' literature. Right now I have my SciFi and Fantasy separate from everything, but it makes it awfully hard to track down things like The Remains of the Day which I consider a literary novel, but not a classic, as opposed to something like Skinny Dip which is neither literary or classic. The purist in me doesn't want certain books rubbing shoulders. LOL For example, none of my Anne Rice books should be 'rubbing covers' with anything by Rimbaud.

641 listed here, but I have at least 20 that I can see from here that haven't been entered, and that's without going through the boxes in the attic. All books in my library are physically in my home.
I must admit that 641 is more than I suspected I'd have. It's definitely time to find some more space.

Sevedra: I graduated with a BA in History and Education. I then went to summer and night classes and earned a Educational Media Specialist endorsement. (an extra 24 hours) With that in hand, I ran a series of school libraries in Nebraska for over 30 years.
I never did my MLS. I would have had to go out of state, and I couldn't afford it. I honestly can't see that I suffered much - beyond never achieving the very last step on the salary schedule reserved for Masters Degrees. I earned a comfortable living with out it. (Well, together with my husband's teaching/coaching salary, of course!)

MerryMary, I am not concerned about the salary really. I have been a stay-at-home mom for 15 years and am now a sophomore in college. Any salary is more than what i have been earning!
I am not currently on the Education track, they offer a History Education degree. I still have time to change to that without messing anything up. Is it better to have the education part? Do you need that to work at a school library?
Alternatively, I may enjoy teaching History. I love history and wish i could get other people interested in how cool it is.
I just came in from the ubs and I bought 5 books! Now I have to catalogue them and get started on my C authors...

In Washington State you need to be a Certificated Teacher to be a school librarian however when schools are short on teachers the state's universities frequently offer a one year program, including student teaching, to qualify one for teaching certification. Each state has different sets of requirements so check on the requirements where you live. You could just call up the librarian at a nearby school. They will know.
96MerryMary
Yeah, I guess I didn't make that clear. I already had my teaching certificate with my BA degree.

Up to 2619 now. I'll get some more posted tomorrow.
I may go by the depatment office and ask them about switching from History of World Cultures to History Education. Since I am only a sophomore, I don't have very many classes in my major yet, so I won't be losing anything.
Thanks for the advice

Be sure to talk it over with your advisor because in my school the History classes from the history department, in the school of Arts and Sciences, were considerably more meaty than the Education history classes. I don't know where your LOVE is....but don't walk away from a subject you love if you can still accomplish your goals in another way.
Good luck.

I'm up to 1733. I hit a few used book stores up in Northampton, Mass. Plus my latest ER book arrived today!

#34 Yapete, my first bookcases weren't wall mounted, rather they were made of large clinker bricks with a plank across the top, then just repeated up the wall and around the corner. I used good thick jarah planks and the concrete bricks were large aerated, so they were light as well as large. I filled them with books and knick-knacks and most people didn't even notice the bricks.
Hope that is of some assistance in the short term for you.
My library is a huge 356. I love my books, but still want sooooo many more. I'd be very happy to have a very large nothing/zero on the end of that number.

I wonder whether I'll ever manage to give books away. It would probably be a good thing, but I feel like if I get started with something like Bookmooch, it won't really help my cause....
Of course, I could give them away somewhere else, but the temptation of exchanging them for more books would probably be too strong.

Well, folks, I was at an "estate sale" today in a home here in our little "manufactured home" "park". Ahem, can anyone define "collector" in a not very nice way? This lady had a thing for books, and unfortunately she also had a thing for cigarettes. She had so many books that some of the rooms could not be entered until they took some books out. They wanted to donate them to the community's little library so I went to pick out what might be suitable. I found two newer books and took them and told the real estate woman to send the rest to the Goodwill. Dear me. They probably won't even make it to the shelves. Very old, very smelly.
Reminds me that I want to be more thoughtful of my "heirs" and dispose of my library in an appropriate way before I kick the bucket.
Food for thought.

I'm up to 3333 :) I still have about 500 to go I think.
About the smelly ancient books and leaving them for posterity to deal with: I agree, it is rude and inconvenient. We don't smoke, so our books don't smell like anything except paper. As for leaving too many behind, I guess I will leave them all for my beneficiaries to deal with, but at least they will be shelved and organized!

#117 - Oh, that is too bad. You can air them out, if you think some of them are worth it. I have done that with some of my son's books that were stored in the basement, and got that 'damp cellar' smell. I just left them fanned open for a day or two in a dry room.
I'll admit, I haven't tried it with ciggie-smelling books, though.

Oh, I just did not have the energy or the time to try to save this lady's books. She had a long shelf full of 1970s psychology and psychiatry books; hard backs; all smoky and smelly and dusty. There must have been some good stories in this lady's life. But it was not my turn to be involved...

my dad once fished a large cardboard box of books out of the garbage and brought them home for us to read. and we did. we let them air out for a few days cause they smelled just a little and then, they were as good as used! all mass market paperbacks, nothing special, but i was a teen and devouring books at an astonishing rate and it was wonderful for me.
my mother tended to get rid of books. she had a fabulous collection of old paperback science fiction and fantasy stuff that i "discovered" on the shelves when i was about 13 or 14 and it really got me hooked on scifi/fant. But a couple years later, she decided she didn't read that stuff anymore and gave every single one of them to the local penitentary (i have no clue how spell that) and i have spent YEARS trying to recreate that shelf of books in my own library.

I'll have the least number on here at 68, but that is only for two years. I read 54 last year and have probably been doing that consistently for years. I just decided to start with the last two years because those books were closest in my shelves and still fresh in my head. I wanted people to get a feeling for who I am now, and my LT collection can grow from there. So when you look at it that way, I actually have quite a bit on LT!
135sevedra
up to 3771 including the book that came today. I still have some more to enter. *sigh* I need to try and get them all in before the end of today, but I might not. *shrug*
136MrsLee
Well, I deleted my Shelfari account, so am now beginning the process of adding all the books in my house to LT. I'll have to use tags I guess, until collections comes along, to differentiate between those I've read but not kept, those I've not read yet, reference and beloved books. I already do that to some extent. I'm starting with my beloved children's books, because they are the closest to the computer.
138MrsLee
Their book system was not as easy to personalize as LT, difficult to enter your exact image of the cover or publication of the book, also, though I had several groups I enjoyed there, they were not that active and I am trying to minimize too much time on the PC. :) When I discovered the book sites, I started at both just to try them out, and as Shelfari was free, I just put all my books there. As I went along though, I learned about the fine tuning you could do here in your library, so that appeals to me more, and $25! Where else can you get as much fun and satisfaction for that amount?
The hardest part was saying goodbye to my groups there. I had started two of them and they were doing well, but I found others to carry on for me before I left.

Poor MrsLee! It is difficult to say goodbye to a comfy place. My Shelfari use was only a month or so. I knew right away i liked LT more. But I had to leave LiveJournal a while back and that was painful and tear-inducing. I hope you have as much and even more friend encounters here.
141MrsLee
Thanks sevedra. :) There really are just about five to six individuals whom I feel I've abandoned, but I did leave them a note saying where I could be found. ;)
Sigh. I just spent almost an hour photographing, fixing and editing the cover of one book to enter here. This may take awhile. It was too big for my scanner, and I'm not very familiar with my new camera, but now one of my special books has the correct cover. The feeling is very satisfactory.

It was The Giant Golden Book of Elves and Fairies which gave me so much trouble, although I just had to fiddle with the cover of Tenggren's Pirates, Ships and Sailors too.

I unfortunately had a somewhat similar experience. Luckily, it was before I owned very many books but when my mother was irritated with me she threw out all the stuff that I, as a young adult, had left in her house. This included my high school annuals which had all the notes and autographs! And the Bridesmaid's dress I wore for my best friend's wedding. And truth be told, probably some other stuff I don't remember or miss.
I now have 1552 books, some of which are real, some of which are books I've read and off loaded in some manner or other.
I am thinking, thinking, thinking about possibly having to downsize this library if I get to move to My Island. Also, need to off load some furniture, so I'll do that first. All I really need is a bed, a comfy chair, and my book cases, full! Right?

#149 - Thanks. I do most of mine on my scanner, it's pretty easy to do that way, just tedious. I think I blew the system up last night loading my books though, the site went down at about 1:30ish. Probably a good thing, as I really did need to go to bed.
Anyway, I now have 1013 books entered! I haven't even finished my children's books. I've managed to discard about 6. These are all the children's books I love which I'm entering, though some belong to my children, they don't want them right now, so I'm saving them for when they do, or for my future grandchildren.

I bought another book. Surprising, eh? So now I have 1553. I got a new book by a local university prof: The Weather of the Pacific Northwest; not Rains All the Time: as the touchstone decided. The new book is by Cliff Mass and is really about weather; how to read the clouds, and useful stuff like that. No whining.

I think I have FINALLY finished! I still get books all the time, so I will add them as they arrive to live in my library. But, the official final count (for now) is 4026. And exhausted!

Brava, sevedra! I wish I had 4,026 books.
I'm very close to having everything OUT of my library that I don't want anymore. Since joining LT and BookMooch I've gotten quite ruthless about shelf space - if something is questionable, out it goes to make room for something that reflects what I'm reading/collecting now.

#161/162 -- Whichever you prefer. Some people use the site to just catalog books they own, others use it to track what they've read, or what they want to read. Have fun, and welcome to LibraryThing!
164maggie1944
I continue to grow: 1554 today. Many have been read but probably many more are owned and not yet read; Some like to tag those with TBR (to be read) but I am embarrassed to see how many physical and Kindle books I own which I have not yet read. I don't think if I read all day, every day, I could get them all finished before I turn 100. Nonetheless, I like having a big, fat library.

Poly - You can post and catalogue and keep track of any books you want. Only book you want to own, only books you want to rea, only book you own, only books you have read, any combination of those and any other stuff you can think of. LibraryThing is just a place to keep track. You can use it however you wish. I, personally, only want to keep track of what I own. Everyone is different!

Karen - It took me a month of working in my library every single day to weed out books. I sorted and sorted and moved and boxed and thought and got rid of hundreds of books. I took all of them to the used bookstore, what they didn't want I donated some to the library for selling and some to a charity that was picking up in my neighborhood at a convenient time. but the picking and choosing and culling was a long painful process. I admire anyone who can do it!
167karenmarie
sevedra - its taking that much time doesn't surprise me at all. I'm glad you were able to make sure every book got a home.
And I agree that it is painful because WHAT IF you want to look at a specific book in the future? The only way I could get rid of some was to tell myself that if I wanted them again I could acquire them again. (Sentimental or rare books I keep regardless of what I think of them.)

I know! I have a lot of sentimental books myself :) Plus, there are books in my library that I kept because I have a teenager who'll want to read them soon and a younger one who'll want to read them in a few years. I know I am done with them, but I don't actually want to have to buy them again. So, I held onto them... Maybe in 10 years, i'll do it all again!
169MrsLee
1,146 and counting. I've worked through two bookcases now, adding, editing, getting the right cover, etc. Only about 10 more bookcases to go.
I'm looking forward to seeing how many are TBR, but I'm only marking TBR on those which I actually intend to try to read. Some of the books I've kept for schooling I didn't mark and don't care. :) Since I inherited a lot of my books, I'll try reading them and if they are not doing anything for me, out they will go. I've actually weeded through a lot of books and have three large stacks to go to the used bookstore.
I love doing this.

ntbr (not to be read for whatever reason - reference, sentimental value only, rare or collectible, inherited, etc.),

Hi maggie1944 - not so much awesome as obsessive-compulsive, I think. Once I got the idea of classifying books, I had to make sure ALL of them were classified. I have 689 tbr books right now. This does NOT stop me from acquiring more, of course. And, tagging them as I'm entering them.
With finances tight and already having more books than I could possibly justify in this lifetime, I'm trying to not buy NEW books and being rather successful - only 3 new books from Amazon compared with 16 last year at this same time. I also have all my books classifed as fiction, nonfiction, or reference. More OCD!

I am up to a modest 1342. I never identify the TBRs only ones I've read. I may get to all the TBRs eventually but I don't want any pesky guilt getting in the way of finding other splendid books. . .
But honestly karenmarie you have a good policy and I do love a book that has had a life before me.

I'm excited! We went to Ikea tonight and bought some new bookshelves. My husband helped me enter in a bunch more books. I'm up to 235 (and I'm now a paying member). I guess I should say "we" are up to 235. A lot of the books that were entered tonight are his. :-)

I've entered a new world. My library now has listed books that I've checked out from the Library and read. I wanted to keep some little reviews and to be able to refer back to them; also, dates. I like the dates when I read something. So my numbers are now going to grow way beyond my bookcases capacity.
I love LT.

JadedJenn - What a great thing that your spouse is involved here too! I can only get mine interested when there are a lot of bad puns or math jokes going on. :)

Okay, I had to update. I currently have 400 books in my library, all tagged (some more so than others), most rated, and some reviewed. Still not in the same bracket as many of you, but I plead youth and far fewer years of book buying behind me. Looking at my stats, I added 155 so far this month, and 108 last month! My goal once I finish entering books (yes, I DO still have more) is to write one review a day, and add upload my custom covers (I have a ton). This is so much fun- does that make me a geek? ;)

If you're a geek, we're all geeks.
Congrats too. It is fun, isn't it! I admire your goals.
You've got a great start, MissWoodhouse1816.

Oh I haven't replied here yet it seems. I have 930 - a number that hasn't changed much recently since I have been trading in unwanted books for the most part, with several new books coming my way.
Sigh, I barely have room for 1000 books. It's not practical to let it get much higher. I'm sure I could squeeze more in somewhere...

Up to 3,456 now. Still trying to figure where to put in another bookshelf.
181DeusExLibrus
I've got a measly 408 thus far. However I too plead youth. I do plan to have a library of at least 1,000 volumes before I pass on.

Today I am unpacking my last box of books, which means that I can finally start addingg all my books into LT. So great to have all my books around me again. Now it is a real home
183Esta1923
629 (but I did a very very sloppy job at the start so there are more, and, alas, these orphans may never make it into the group). Unlike many LTers I am not currently acquiring books. . . age and budget limitations. However I treasure what I've got, and am a champion rereader!!

I'm incorrigable (sp?). Here I am with hundreds of books, and enthusiasm for LT, AND a very good reason for getting my books catalogued, organised and a wishlist started (my entire family and friends got me book tokens for my birthday - i am RICH!!!!). Where am I at? A measly 45 books catalogued months ago. Le sigh...

Currently 646 which is one large double stacked bookcase, one small bookcase and 30 or so cookbooks.
I have 4 more large bookcases and two smaller ones waiting to be done.
Its taking a while as I am 17 weeks pregnant and I can only do cataloguing during the day as my husband doesnt think I should be lifting anything and gets in my way in the evenings. During the day its only my 3.5 year old daughter who gets in my way!
As a child I used to raid my mother's books, now its my mother's turn to do that to me - I have to watch her like a hawk and make a point of jokingly checking her bags before she leaves the house! Books in the female side of my family are a highly valued commodity!

My total is going up, in spite of my resolve not to buy so many. I'm going through my books shelf-by-shelf to add CK, and I keep finding titles I missed the first time around.
188maggie1944
The only number I know is the LT number, including library books read and returned, which is 1566. Most of them I own or did own. I am still trying to let some of my books go back into circulation as I do not want to move them all when I get my dream move the The Island.

historywitch - Congrats on the baby!
Whenever I visit my mom's house I go through her shelves and reclaim my books, but as you say, lots of my favorites came from her shelves. ;)
I've worked through two cupboards of school books, getting rid of lots of curriculum and such, but I found there was some I could not bring myself to part with. That which had truly brought joy to our homeschool experience I kept. I'm not sure whether I'm keeping it for the memory, reference, future grandbabies or for loaning out, but I couldn't bear to part with it. I've two more bookcases in the "schoolroom" to go through, then I can move on to the cookbooks. I think I've cataloged most of them already.

After getting a bunch of books from a friend who culled his library a week or two ago, and buying some more, I'm up to 432. My TBR pile seems to be growing, not shrinking, and yet I can't not buy books.
191maggie1944
My profile says I have 1,570 but that lies as I list library books I have read and also some books I have "disposed of" are still there. sigh. I really don't know how many physical books I have. But I like the number 1570.
192jillmwo
Oh, my goodness, I'm up to 800! And I know there are some titles not yet input to the catalog.
193wid_get
357 cataloged of these:
239 are tagged as "own"
2 Need to Read/Find for a Bradbury short story (All Summer in a Day) & Anthony's last Incarnations of Immortality
27 are tagged "gave away"
39 "donated"
351 are tagged as "read" - hmmm, that should be 355 if 2 are "to read" - guess I should look at that.
6 are tagged as "favorite gift"
I've downloaded a bunch of e-books for MS Reader and should probably add that as a tag.

I'm at 1738, with two new ER books headed my way. I also noticed a few books upstairs on my shelves that are not in my catalog for some odd reason. One of these days/weeks/months I'll take my laptop up and add them, I guess.
195cad_lib
There's a house outside Philadelphia with 1,556 bboks catalogued. There's an unknown, but pretty small number of books not catalogued. The Wife's books are not catalogued; some of hers are professional (medical, and healthcare IT), rest are fiction.
Hey y'all!

I created some new shelf space two days ago and transferred some books there. Since I have location tags I had to change those too and found a book I had never cataloged! I'm at 2966.
This doesn't count my daughter's and husband's that I'm going to catalog eventually - say another 300 or so.

Am I the only person who answers the "how many.." question with "Too many!"? Yikes!
Perhaps it's because a good portion of my catalogued books are from when my children were homeschooled. If I could bring myself to sort through them I'd have more money to buy books for ME, and more space on the shelves too.

Wow, you all are most awesome!
I've got somewhere around 400 entered into LT...though I do have quite a bit more.
And, as was so eloquently stated by another, "I can't not buy books".

4,057 although that includes five sets of duplicates, which makes my total number of unique books catalogued 4,052. That's most of the books I can think of to enter right now unless I decide to do something like manually enter my issues of Analog and Asimov's, but it doesn't include all of the books in my kids' library (I'm not going to add Scarlet Monster Lives Here), or any of the books in my wife's collection (I'm not going to bother adding a bunch of Danielle Steele books that I will never read to my library).
