The April Global Reading Group will be covering the issue of Slavery. In tackling the subject of slavery, we’re actually examining a much larger group of issues which include slavery, sexual slavery, racial oppression, indentured servitude, and apartheid. It has been argued that racial oppression in the form of apartheid, the Jim Crow laws, and indentured servitude are/were slavery by another name. Recently there have been racial civil wars in many places, not the least of which are Bosnia and Dafur. Apartheid is being or has been practiced not only in South Africa. To give us a little guidance, I’ve included the definitions for each from Encarta.
Slavery: Social institution defined by law and custom as the most absolute involuntary form of human servitude. The definitive characteristics of slaves are as follows: their labor or services are obtained through force; their physical beings are regarded as the property of another person, their owner; and they are entirely subject to their owner's will.
Indentured Servitude: Work under an unbreakable contract for a fixed period, in return for room and board, training, or pay.
Apartheid: Policy of racial segregation formerly followed in South Africa. The word apartheid means “separateness” in the Afrikaans language and it described the rigid racial division between the governing white minority population and the nonwhite majority population. The National Party introduced apartheid as part of their campaign in the 1948 elections, and with the National Party victory, apartheid became the governing political policy for South Africa until the early 1990s.
Racial Oppression: “Racial oppression of black people in America has done what neither class oppression nor sexual oppression, with all their perniciousness, has ever done: destroyed an entire people and their culture.” Eleanor Holmes Norton
Avaland kindly provided me with a link to On Point with Tom Ashbrook re 21st Century Slavery: http://www.onpointradio.org/shows/2009/01/21st-century-slavery/ It's well worth viewing.
Because the subject is so complex and because there's so much to choose from, I’m going to allow reading in any of the areas of racial oppression and through either fiction or non-fiction.

Holy Mackerel! Great job! There's a lot on these lists to think about. It's a bit overwhelming.
I would add to your topic child soldiers, although it could argued that, though morally reprehensible, it doesn't quite fit into your category.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_use_of_children
Your category of "racial oppression" seems a bit Americentric; to that I would add other examples of institutional oppression of the aboriginal peoples of Australia, for example.
I haven't been over to the discussion thread yet but it will be interesting to consider what the justification for slavery is thought to be for whatever country, culture...etc one is reading about. And then, of course, there can be a lot of discussion about power. An intriguing topic, albeit incredibly broad as laid out.

Spot on avaland. I was shocked to learn that the Australian government was removing aboriginal children from their homes as late as the 1960s.

Interesting article from the Associated Press about women's roles in the contemporary slave trade:

#7 avaland, though the quote was certainly americentric, the subject was definitely intended to be all encompassing. That was just the best "definition" I could find of racial oppression. Certainly it can be found in almost all countries. I would argue that in the U.S. it occurs between the illegal aliens and the rest of the populace.

I would also reccommend the novel Continental Drift by Russell Banks.
One of his other novels is listed above, but not Continental Drift, which I thought was fantastic. Really dark and moving. It alternates between New England, Florida, Haiti, and points between, revealing in gut-wrenching clarity how interwoven even the most distant-seeming lives can be. There are also boat scenes which, for me, called to mind depictions of the infamous Middle Passage. In that sense, I thought Banks managed to connect images of slavery past with enslavement present. Really powerful book.

I plan to read A Woman Named Solitude.

I would also add Cambridge, The Atlantic Sound, Higher Ground, The Final Passage and Crossing the River, all by Caryl Phillips, to this impressive list.

A couple by non-British/American authors:
The Nubian Prince by Juan Bonilla
Ama: A story of the atlantic slave trade by Manu Herbstein.
I must confess I'm finding it difficult to find much that's not by British or American authors, but maybe we don't mind so much for this read? What do others think? (Or am I just being hopeless at finding books?)

The Poet Slave of Cuba: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano by Margarita Engle, a Cuban-American writer is a YA poetic narrative. Some other riveting poetic novels about slavery are Brother to Dragons by Robert Penn Warren and Bloodlines by Fred D'Aguiar.

I'm having a hard time finding something I'd personally think is interesting enough to read. I don't want to read a classic, a YA book, or a well known novelist. I want something a bit off the beaten track. Oh, well. At least I have another month to find something. I kind of agree with you, LizT. :(

18> While I was randomly browsing last night, I did find Segu by Maryse Condé - she's from Guadeloupe but has lived in West Africa. It's a historical novel, set around when slavery began in West Africa. I'm quite tempted.
One that I read recently that would fit this read well but looks like it's not very easy to get hold of is I of Ebony by Nana Grey-Johnson from The Gambia. It's not amazing literature but was a reasonably interesting read, again about the earlyish days of slavery in West Africa.

I hope to have a copy of The Book of Negros by then. If not, I'll pull that old copy of Beloved off my shelf--it's on my list to read this year anyway.

I'm especially interested in actual or fictional stories about modern day slavery. Two books I'm thinking of reading are Enslaved: True Stories of Modern Day Slavery and Sex Trafficking: The Global Market in Women and Children by Kathryn Farr.
Anyone know of any other books on contemporary slavery?
I'll probably also read Someone Knows My Name.

kidzdoc ~ I have a non-fiction book, A Crime So Monstrous by Holbrooke, waiting for April. I can also recommend a wonderful YA fiction book Sold by Patricia McCormick about modern-day child sexual slavery. I have several others, but those are the only two I can currently remember.
I have Someone Knows My Name as well which, for anyone whose not aware of it, is the same book as The Book of Negros. As is sometimes the case, the title was changed for US publication.

For history buffs, there are fictional and nonfiction accounts of the captivity and forced labor of European and American sailors taken hostage by pirates off the North African or 'Barbary' coast.
The Narrative of Robert Adams, a Barbary Captive is one.
But the anthology White Slaves, African Masters might be more interesting, particularly for a first-timer to the topic.

The February free download from christianaudio.com is Not For Sale by David Batstone. I have been listening to it all month (it can be very depressing) and it is a great resource for learning about and thinking about modern slavery all over the globe.

I'd be interested in reading Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery. I do not know much about the book, but I saw a movie based on it, "Amazing Grace" and it is a compelling story. It is about Wilberforce, a leader in the campaign to end slavery in England, who wrote the song.

I think I may read Comfort Woman bt Nora Okja Keller. A mother daughter story set in Korea. The mother is haunted by the memories of being a sex slave in the camps during the Japanese occupation of Korea during WWII.
I can recommend (along with Toni Morrison) White Cargo as an introduction to indentured servitude in America. There are older books I think are better on the subject, but one is the newest and has a less scholarly tone. The Testimony of an Irish Slave Girl and the Lost German Slave Girl are both pretty good.
The Rabbit Proof Fence is a memoir but I think one gets a good idea about the policy of removing aboriginal children from their parents in Australia.

A really good review in the NYT Sunday Book Review as well as two on LT makes me think I'm going to read The Book of Night Women by Marlon James. Which is set on a plantation in Jamaica.
Edited to try (but fail) to fix the touchstones and to add the author's name.

I could have missed it amongst that HUGE list, but I didn't spot Bound by Sally Gunning, a recent book on intentured servitude which I enjoyed.
Hoping to join this discussion if my other book group commitments allow!

James McBride's Song Yet Sung was chosen for the 2009 One Maryland One Book program, which is designed to spark community discussions about race and identity. The book is about runaway slaves on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

If your interested in reading from Project Gutenburg and from the 1001 list.
The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano written in 1789 must be one of the earliest memoirs of slavery.

great, I'll go search that out

I'm still going to try to get to this theme before the end of the month. I recently picked up Unconfessed by Yvette Christianse about a slave in South Africa in the early part of the 19th century (yes, I've changed my mind on the book:-)
