I just finished reading Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton and I'm looking for some books on similar themes - frustrated love, inescapable fate, oppressing confinement, looming tragedy and so on, set against a desolate frozen background.

I think you've just described Dr. Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak.
