Moving my clues to a new thread. The old one was getting long.

Clue 1: I left my job to take a trip around the world

Clue 2: I managed to go around the world in less than 80 days!

Clue 3: I am a member of the Western American Explorers Club in San Francisco.

Clue 4: My mode of transportation was a balloon.

2cmbohn
Apr 18, 2009, 11:43 am

I know the book! But I don't remember his name.

3ejj1955
Edited: Apr 18, 2009, 2:04 pm

Phileas Fogg's companion . . . went by one name, I think . . .

I googled it--normally I'd think that was cheating, but I believe Cmbohn gets the credit for this one, anyway. Assuming we're right! JP?

Hmmm...wrong book.

Clue 1: I left my job to take a trip around the world

Clue 2: I managed to go around the world in less than 80 days!

Clue 3: I am a member of the Western American Explorers Club in San Francisco.

Clue 4: My mode of transportation was a balloon.

Clue 5: I was balloon-wrecked along the way and landed on a remote volcanic island with curious inhabitants.

Nothing wrong with making them a bit tricky! You never know what someone else will be able to guess.

Clue 1: I have a funny name, with a funny story attached to it.

What book is that from?

250littlegeek
Edited: May 15, 2009, 11:03 pm

Carlos Casteneda wrote a series of autobiographical books about his apprenticeship to a real Yaqui shaman. He billed his books as anthropology, but many people believe they were at least partly fictional. They were very popular in the '60's and '70's, partly because his training involved the use of drugs to induce shamanic trance states. I devoured them when I was young; they are great stories, regardless of how much "fact" is involved. Plus, Don Juan and later, Don Genaro, are just awesome characters. And I love La Gorda, too.

The first book is called The Teachings of Don Juan.

You got it. And yes - I loved Don Genaro and La Gorda too. (By the way, you mentioned 'fiction'; actually I don't believe the books are fictional - you couldn't make it up - but does that matter in this thread? I've never seen the rules actually stated, I've always just assumed that "Who Am I?" must refer to a character in a book, fictional or otherwise - and we've already had Noah as one character. Would you be allowed to use Samuel Pepys, Jesus Christ, Socrates ... all characters in books?)

As to the jumping off the mountain part : I think this was an occasion when he had to get his 'second attention' (his 'dreaming body') working for him, and it was this that jumped off the mountain, but because of what Juan Matus and Genaro had done to him, he didn't know what was happening, or rather he simply couldn't rationalise it. "There are more things in heaven and earth ... Horatio" ...

"What can it have been like, dear Jane? The moment that Mr. Wickham arose from the ground covered in putrefaction and sores, and yet moving around as if still living?"
.
"Oh Lizzie, yes, it was terrible. And when Mr.Darcy struck Mr.Wickham hard in the face and his head fell off and he continued walking towards me with no head, and Lord! I swear that Lydia and Kitty went as white as chalk though even that was to be preferred to the green-ness of Wickham."
.
Mr.Bennett entered the living room.
.
"Now my dear daughters, please let us have no more of this for now. Mr.Coffins has called and wishes to pay his respects ..."
