I guess it is a little late for a July read. Maybe we should talk about an August read during these last two weeks of July. Any one up for it? Any ideas?
Seems like the word association thread with sci fi and fantasy themes might bring up some ideas. What say you?

Please explain group read?

We have, several times, thrown out a bunch of suggestions and after a period of some discussion and solicitation of more suggestions we vote on one book for the next month. Then those who wish to read the book do so. Then, we usually have two discussion threads: one for people who have started the book but not finished and therefore want no spoilers, and a second for people who have finished the book and want to discuss it without worry about spoiling it for those who have not finished it. Generally a dozen or so people participate and the discussions are sometimes lively and fun.
Do you have any favorite authors you think other Green Dragoneers would enjoy?

I'll have to think about that, right now I am trying to finish one of those early reviews, and a couple of others that I need to get back to (historical). After that, i can join in. Maybe I will be completed before August gets here.
Do you guys count short fics? Or does it have to be a massive multi-volume saga?

Short is pretty good, actually. We haven't done a short story before (maybe a good idea, actually). Usually it's a single novel.
I really do like the idea of a short story discussion. Cordwainer Smith, anyone?

A single short story might be difficult to have sufficient discussion over - but a themed collection could be very interesting. Either a collection of one author's work or an anthology of tales such as Legends
Of course in counterpoint there's always little prince which is very short, but holds a wealth of discursive areas.

I, personally, am not a fan of the short story. I would love to read Little Prince with my Green Dragon friends. You all are very good at interesting discussions.

My Bad: double posting. Duh
but it did occur to me that a smile can be had from my saying I don't like short stories and then say I'd like to re-read Little Prince which one could argue is a long short story. (-:

Little Prince will be be good for me too. Haven't read before, but actually planning to bring it with me on vacation

I haven't read The Little Prince in years. I've never participated in the group read before, but this one sounds fun.
11readafew
Would anyone be interested in The Picture of Dorian Gray?
12jennieg
Either one is fine. I haven't read them in years.
I like the idea of something short for August.

Dorian Gray isn't very long, is it? I think either could qualify for something short in the summertime. Any other ideas?

OOH!!! Even ~I've~ got The Little Prince, and it's been easily 15 years since I read it to my youngest son. I could really go for a reread of it.
I'm involved with a writing group now, so my reading time is going to be divided among books that I read for pleasure, books that I need for the writing exercises, and WIP-stage books of the other members of the group. So, TLP would be perfect for me for a Group read.

I read Dorian Gray last year so I am for The Little Prince. But I could be persuaded to read Dorian Gray again. :)
16MissWoodhouse1816
Oh, shorter would be good. I'm stilll trying to wade my way through Song for Arbonne- I'm usually a fast reader but it is tough going.
I've always meant to read Little Prince, and Dorian Gray is sitting in my "to be read eminently" pile, so either one works for me!

I don't think I've participated in a GD group read since we did Elantris which I think was a couple years ago. I'd certainly consider joining in a group read of The Little Prince, I still have my copy from when I was a child.

I'm dedicated to my mission to shave an avalanche off Mount TBR so the probability is high that I'm not going to participate whatever the choice is. Even though I really like group reads.
19katylit
I would be delighted to join in with either The Little Prince or The Picture of Dorian Gray, both favourites of mine. I'd love to read the discussions, that would be fun.
20Jim53
I'm up for either. Would prefer The Little Prince but will go along with whatever is decided.
23WholeHouseLibrary
My vote: The Little Prince
24maggie1944
Me, too, I am ready to read The Little Prince for the August read.
26readafew
I suspect I'll be far in the minority, but Dorian Gray
27frithuswith
I think I'm going for The Little Prince, upon which note today's xkcd seems oddly pertinent...
28jennieg
If it's not too late, I'd like to vote for The Little Prince.
29sandragon
I'll also vote for Dorian Gray. I've wanted to read it for a while now.
30katylit
Okay, so far 5 for The Little Prince and 3 for Dorian Gray (I'm casting my vote in with DG). How 'bout we give it until Friday and then tally up the final count?
31katylit
#27, you're right LizT, xkcd yesterday was bang on (sorry, no pun intended!) with our current topic ;-)
32maggie1944
Good idea, Katylit, to set a deadline: so its vote before midnight (LibraryThing time) on Friday.
34Anastasia169
I vote for dorian Gray - I've always meant to read it and Oscar Wilde is always good.
35storyjunkie
I vote Dorian Gray. It's about time I actually sat down with it, instead of the works that reference it.
37jenreidreads
I'd read either. I own both, but I only own The Little Prince en français, actually. :)
38WholeHouseLibrary
Perhaps we could agree to read: The Little Gray Prince Dorian?
40streamsong
Little Prince this month, Dorian Gray next month?
41katylit
That sounds like a good plan streamsong. Let's read The Little Prince this month as we had 6 confirmed votes for it and 5 for DG, and then we can read Dorian Gray next month. Okay everybody?
43maggie1944
OK, I am good with this idea. We are so effecient. I'll start hunting for my copy today.
44WholeHouseLibrary
I'm in. That'll give me a month to find a copy of DG.
45cal8769
I'm in. I have to get The Little Prince from the library. I actually own Dorian Gray.
47maggie1944
Is it time to start reading Portrait? We might start the discussion thread right on the 1st of Sept. as The Little Prince was a quick read. What say you?
48readafew
because of different requirements on my time I don't think I can start Portrait until early Sept. so if you start I'll be late.
