#40 - Is this your first time reading "The Good Earth" or is it a reread? That was one of those monumental books in my teen years that helped me see the difference between excellent writing and fluff. Love it.
44clamairy
#43 - It's my first! I've read a couple of others by Pearl S. Buck and even got to meet her when I was 12, but I never cracked this one before. :o)

#45 - She was spending the Summer in a little town called Danby, Vermont. I think my folks had read about the place in Yankee Magazine and we drove all the way up from Long Island to look at some property. My dad had just retired early and they were thinking of relocating there. She was down town at the General Store. I was in awe because I had been reading and rereading Fairy Tales of the Orient for years at that point. I had no freaking idea she had written any 'real' books, or won the Pulitzer. She was very gracious and quite lovely, and imposing, too. She spent quite a bit of time talking to my folks about China and its importance to/place in the of the world, because I think Richard Nixon had just come back from there.

#48 - Benny and Shrimp? Oh, I just looked that up and it looks wonderful!
Thanks, I am glad the incident stuck in my head all these years! :o) The only other famous writer I saw in the flesh was John Gardner, the writer of Grendel. Not too personable, that guy.

I got back from the Dells rather early this morning as my overly-speedy reading had me finishing Fire at about quarter past 2 this morning. Don't quite know where i'm going next, maybe i'll head to Guernsey or perhaps North Carolina (or wherever it is that A Walk to Remember takes place)
90jnwelch
Hah! I was just going to tell you that you'll enjoy the trip to the Dells in Fire, LadyViolet, based on >85 RLMCartwright:, but you've already traveled there and back!
