Which of the books on your list have you read already? I've enjoyed some of those on your proposed list. Drowning Ruth was a favorite, as well as Where the Red Fern Grows.

I too have read some of these books and have others on my TBR shelf. Their Eyes Were Watching God and Middlesex were two of my favorites, and I have Killer Angels on my own list for the 101010 Challenge. I'll have to check out some of your suggestions for my own States list.

I've added a couple titles recommended by friends: Shoeless Joe for Iowa and Garden State for New Jersey. I haven't read Drowning Ruth, but I've finished about half of these (marked with an XX). For the most part, I only included books I liked on the list. Confederacy of Dunces is my favorite of the list.
