I have been dying to find this book for as long as i can remember.
It was a young adult genre. Not sure when it was written, but I read back in the early 90's and pretty sure it was a used book, so if anything it had been out for a while. I seem to remember it having a very deep blue cover. The word "porch" always comes to mind when I think of the book, either because it was in the title or because it was somewhere the character in the story used to go hide, under her porch.
The story is about a young girl not yet a teenager, maybe 11 or 12. It seems to be set somewhere in the 60's or so. She has a best friend that lives close to her and the begining of the story revolves around them hanging out together and having sleepovers. One part of the story stands out to me. The girl in the story gets up early in the morning and decides to eat a piece of chocolate cake from the freezer. She tells her self that it all many breakfeast ingrediants, so its ok for her to eat. She has an older brother, and the characters are very close. In one part of the story I think her brother kisses her friend, which makes her, the sister, very mad. Her brother ends up getting very sick and ends up dying. I do know that she attends the funeral and when she goes up to the open casket she thinks about how he would not be happy with the clothes they had him in or his hair being brushed the way it was. She touches his hand and notices he feels weird, and then tries to pry his folded hands apart.
Thats about all I can remember...I really hope someone can help!!
