Before I launch into the study of Byzantine economics, does anyone have any suggestions for reading? I have just received Angeliki E. Laiou and Cécile Morrison's The Byzantine Economy: any opinions?

I found Peter Sarris' Economy and Society in the Age of Justinian interesting - a fairly detailed analysis of the Oxyrhynchus papyri and economic structures in the 6th century (primarily - there's some 5th & 7th century info too).

I wonder whether there's a similar study of early Islamic Egypt too? That'll be dependent on whether similar archives survive, of course. And I'm not aware of any.
